Story
Hi there, I'm Delta, your future best friend! You see, I'm a bit of an adventurer. I once chased a squirrel into a mail truck. Next thing I knew, I was at the shelter! Don't worry, I've given up my squirrel-chasing days for a more mellow lifestyle. I'm the curious type, always sniffing out the best spots for belly rubs. I'm also smart enough to know that the quickest way to treats is through your heart. I'm as sweet and friendly as they come, and I promise to be your loyal companion. So, how about we embark on this adventure called life together? This pet is eligible for the PETS FOR PATRIOTS adoption program. Rescue FAQs

The Louisa Humane Society (LHS) was founded in 2001 by concerned citizens who believe that healthy, adoptable animals who are orphaned should not be euthanized. Over the years a partnership has formed between Louisa County and LHS which has resulted in improvements to the County’s shelter facility and staffing upgrades at the shelter. The euthanization rate at the county shelter continues to decrease each year as dogs and cats are taken in to LHS foster homes and given time to find wonderful new families and forever homes. The volunteers that make up the LHS believe that healthy, adoptable animals do not need to be euthanized if spay and neuter programs are supported, aggressive adoption programs are implemented, and a public educational campaign on responsible pet ownership is launched within the community. We depend on volunteers and welcome anyone who loves animals and who is willing to give a little time to the effort. The Louisa Humane Society is incorporated and has non-profit 501(c)(3) status. We accept tax deductible gifts.
Our mission of the Louisa Humane Society is to improve the quality of life for the homeless and abandoned animals of Louisa County; and to provide a clean, safe environment for these unwanted animals while making every effort to place adoptable animals into new, loving, responsible homes.

Additional adoption info

The Louisa Humane Society has animals of every breed, shape, age, color, size, temperament...all they need is a safe, loving, responsible family to call their own. Will you open your heart and your home to one of these amazing creatures?

Are you looking for a particular breed? Did you know that animals shelters often have purebreds?

Are you looking for an absolute one-of-a-kind mix? You'll find them here. Not one breed, but a fascinating and gorgeous mix of several.

Please complete our adoption application online at www.louisahumanesociety.com and one of our volunteers will follow up with you as soon as possible.

Tilly – Sweet & Shy Beagle Looking for Love 🐾❤️ Meet Tilly, a 2-year-old Beagle weighing around 15–20 lbs who is ready to find her forever family! This gentle girl is a little shy at first, but with patience and love, she will blossom into the spunky, happy pup she’s meant to be. Tilly is: ✔️ Spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped ✔️ Heartworm, Lyme, and Ehrlichia positive – but don’t worry! She has already started her treatment.    • She’ll be on doxycycline for one month    • Followed by our vet’s slow kill method for heartworm (Advantage Multi for 8 months) – a method we’ve had great success with. Tilly was found as a stray in Chesterfield with her mom, Maple, before being transferred to us. She’s now safe, loved, and waiting for a home that will give her the time and patience she needs to build confidence and show off her true Beagle personality. If you’re looking for a quiet companion who will reward you with unconditional love once she feels safe, Tilly might be the perfect match for you! ✅ Complete our adoption application at: https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/HPAW/Dog 📧 Questions? Story
🌟 Adoption Spotlight: Jet 🌟 *Needs experienced adopter* Meet Jet, a stunning 1-year-old Miniature Australian Shepherd who weighs just 15 lbs fully grown. Don’t let his size fool you—Jet is full of personality and quirks, and he’s looking for a very special adopter who can give him the patient, experienced home he deserves. Jet came to us from a backyard breeding case but was originally rescued by a Good Samaritan who gave him a safe place when he needed it most. Unfortunately, due to financial struggles, she was unable to keep him long term, but her greatest wish is for him to find a home that will love and understand him for who he is. 🐾 Personality & Behavior Jet is a nervous, cautious boy who was not well socialized as a puppy. Because of this, he can be a bite risk if he feels overwhelmed or cornered. He’s not the type of dog who immediately seeks out cuddles—instead, he prefers to do his own thing, especially when outside. Once he builds trust, he can be incredibly sweet and will show you glimpses of his loving side, even offering his paw for attention. He is: Not suitable for a home with children (he startles easily and is uncomfortable with fast movements). Previously lived in a home with cats, but we have not retested him here—so any introductions should be slow and careful. Indifferent to other dogs—he doesn’t seek them out but also doesn’t go looking for trouble. Very vocal, which makes him unsuitable for apartment living. Jet also has the quirk of being a submissive pee-er, which will need patience and gentle handling. While he was previously in a home and is likely potty trained, adopters should expect some retraining in the first week as he transitions from kennel life. 🏡 Ideal Home for Jet Jet needs a calm, child-free home with adopters who have experience with herding breeds or shy, anxious dogs. His adopter should be someone who: Understands that building trust will take time. Can provide structure, routine, and positive reinforcement. Is open to consulting a vet about anxiety medication, as it may help him thrive. Can give him mental stimulation (training, puzzles, structured play) since Aussies are naturally intelligent and active. Jet is not a dog who will immediately settle into family outings or busy social lives—he is more of a homebody who will flourish in a quieter environment with the right person. 🩺 Medical & Care Jet is: Neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated (Rabies, Distemper, Lepto, Bordetella). Heartworm tested negative. On monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention. Treated for fleas and dewormed. At just 1 year old, Jet has his whole life ahead of him—but he needs someone willing to meet him where he is and help him grow into the wonderful companion we know he can be. ❤️Jet is not just a pretty face—though he is absolutely beautiful, it’s important that adopters look past his looks and see the sensitive soul behind them. With time, patience, and love, Jet could be your most loyal companion. 📍 Located in Louisa County, VA 📧 Email: adoptions@hoovesandpaws.org 📝 Apply: https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/HPAW/Dog

Story
Stella is a sweet and gentle 5-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix with a heart as big as her soft, soulful eyes. Though she can be shy at first, once she gets to know you, Stella will shower you with love, cuddles, and plenty of sweet kisses! Stella came to us from a difficult dog-hoarding situation where she lived with over 15 other dogs. This high-stress environment left her needing time to feel safe and comfortable in new surroundings. But once she warms up, her affectionate and loyal nature truly shines. One of Stella’s favorite activities is running and playing in our Bark Park with her kennel mate, Thumper, and her buddy, Oswald. She seems to do well with other dogs but appreciates a patient introduction to let her trust and confidence grow. Stella is already spayed, fully vaccinated, microchipped, and on monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, so she’s ready to go to her forever home! It’s important to note that Stella has luxating patellas (loose kneecaps) in both her back legs, a condition that may require surgery as she gets older. Stella does have an anti-inflammatory that she takes when her knees "act up." This condition may also cause arthritis to set in earlier in life. Despite this, she remains active, happy, and full of life! If you’re looking for a loyal companion who will reward your patience with endless love and devotion, Stella could be the perfect match. Come meet her today—your new best friend is waiting! 🐾 Ready to Adopt? Here's How! The first step in our adoption process is submitting an application through our website. Simply visit: https://www.hoovesandpaws.org/shelterluv.html, click on the pet’s photo to view their full bio, then click “Apply for Adoption” to get started. Please give us a few days to review your application. If approved, you’ll receive an email from adoptions@hoovesandpaws.org to schedule a meet and greet (including any necessary dog-to-dog introductions). If the meet and greet goes well and you’d like to move forward, we’ll schedule a home check—this means we’ll bring your new furry friend to your home ourselves. This helps ensure a smooth transition and gives your new pup a familiar face upon arrival. We’ll finalize the adoption at that time! Questions, comments, or concerns? Reach out to us anytime at adoptions@hoovesandpaws.org. We're here to help!
