Best Friends Sanctuary Inc. is dedicated to helping to reduce the stray animal population in Fentress County. Our mission is to provide spaying or neutering of the dogs and cats; assist in placing abandoned, unwanted, or abused animals in loving, responsible homes; and to promote and provide animal care education.
We organized in 2001. We started a spay/neuter program and limited adoptions and humane education. In April 2006, we started transporting canines to a no kill shelter in Ohio. To date, we have transported 8000+ canines who have been adopted. We were fortunate to obtain an ASPCA Transportation Grant in 2014 that will help with re-location.
We continue our low income Spay/Neuter program with funds obtained from grants. We also hold many fundraisers during the year to support our rescue/transport program. We are a very rural area with no shelter or animal control of any kind. Unwanted pets are discarded in the road or woods where they meet less than humane deaths by starving, vehicle, wild animals and disease. Many people are against spaying/neutering due to culture so it is a challenge to convince them that spaying or neutering is the answer to a big problem. We get some assistance from the local government, but donations, fundraisers and grants keep us going.
