WAG (We Adopt Greyhounds, Inc) is an all volunteer run 501(c)3 non-profit Greyhound Adoption group based in Connecticut.
WAG has been placing retired racing greyhounds in homes throughout Connecticut since September of 1992.
All the greyhounds in WAG's care are kept in foster homes.
Why Adopt from WAG?
Let's face it, there are other Greyhound adoption groups out there. You may be asking yourself why should you consider adopting from WAG?
WAG's available dogs are all fully vetted.
All WAG dogs have the following performed before adoption: spay/neuter, update vaccines as needed, dental cleaning (if needed), Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma test (tick-borne diseases). WAG foster dogs are also current on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives.
WAG "cat tests"every adoptable dog with a live cat.
This may sound silly, but many groups and even some tracks do cat testing with a stuffed toy, a remote-control car, etc. Some groups that do use live cats only use outdoor (stray) cats, or cats that are in crates.
WAG performs cat testing in a house, with the cat loose and the Greyhound wearing a muzzle. This simulates a home environment while providing for the safety of all animals involved. If you have cat(s) and are interested in a particular Greyhound that we believe is “cat friendly” or “cat workable”, we would have the dog meet your cat(s) at your home, while wearing a muzzle, to see how well they get along. (The same applies for small dogs)
WAG’s available dogs are in foster homes.
Dogs in foster care have already begun the transition from track/kennel life to home life. They learn about stairs, glass doors, house-training, etc. There will still be an adjustment period when the dog moves from its foster home to its adoptive home, but often it is much easier than adopting a dog straight from the trackHaving dogs in foster care also allows WAG to know more about each dog’s personality, such as how the dog reacts to cats, kids, strangers, how it walks on a leash, etc. This can make it easier to find the right dog for your family.
WAG will not choose your Greyhound for you.
WAG will offer advice based on your family’s needs (okay with kids, cats, other dog breeds, etc), but we will not choose your dog for you. We want you to be an active participant in choosing your new family member. We encourage adopters to meet all available dogs that we believe will be a good match for your home, and to let your new dog choose you.If you have other pets, we require that they meet the Greyhound in advance. Often the existing pets in the family help make the decision about which Greyhound to bring home.
WAG supports our adopters before, during, and after the adoption process.
Whether you have already adopted, or are just thinking about adoption, our volunteers are always available if you have questions or concerns. After you bring your Greyhound home, we want to hear from you to see how you are doing.
WAG can loan you a crate to help ease the transition and assist in house-training your new dog.WAG also has Meet & Greets, Playgroups, and other events regularly, and we encourage our adopters or potential adopters to attend. We also encourage people to keep in touch via email, phone, or the WAG FaceBook page.
