Everyone goes through a phase in life where they wonder what they were put on this earth to do. Everyone needs something to live for--a "special purpose". I found mine in parrot rescue.
I always loved animals as a kid--I even made a "bird suit" out of paper, cardboard, and crayons at around 5 years of age. I colored it blue for the colors of the blue and gold macaw and would pretend I could fly. If I find the photo somewhere in my huge photo bin, I will post the embarrassment for all to see. I always envied the fact the birds could fly, and I could not. As a kid I had dreams about flying through the skies. Those were the best dreams.
In the very beginning of my animal obsession, at around age 14, I began keeping reptiles. My first pet being a Bearded Dragon. I began breeding bearded dragons, a few species of snakes, and geckos. As I was finding homes for the babies, I realized how many unwanted reptiles were in need of homes. At that moment I decided I did not want to contribute to the problem of unwanted pets and began rescuing instead. It just felt like the right thing to do. Soon after the reptile rescuing began, I took in a couple of rescued smaller birds, a green cheek conure, painted conure, and cockatiels. Don't get me wrong, I love reptiles and always will, but I find birds to be completely and utterly fascinating. They are such deep complex souls. So began my journey with the parrots.
Eight years ago Remwaldo the Timneh African Grey came into my life and my home. Granted, I had smaller conures and cockatiels before Remy came into my life, but this is the guy who opened my eyes to how extraordinary these animals truly are. Through him I was introduced to the world of Parrots--and the good and the bad things that come with this knowledge. Over the years I took in rescue cases here and there, but never had the resources to really feel like I could make a difference.
Now married to a partner who shares my love (and workload) for these animals, and with a house of our own, we have decided to open our home and dedicate our time to parrots in need. Every person can make a difference in one way or another, and I strive to be a part of it. I have found my niche in this huge world. This is what I live for.
Supplies,cages, medical bills, food, and utilities--aside from our wonderful supporters, every penny is paid out of our pocket--straight from our hard earned paychecks. This is a passion that only like-minded people understand. Every penny spent on saving these animals, every second of time is well worth the outcome of seeing them recover from bad situations and being adopted into a loving, permanent home. No other feeling can compare.
