Everyone goes through a phase in life where they wonder what they were put on this earth to do. Everyone needs something to live for--a "special purpose". I found mine in parrot rescue.
I always loved animals as a kid--I even made a "bird suit" out of paper, cardboard, and crayons at around 5 years of age. I colored it blue for the colors of the blue and gold macaw and would pretend I could fly. If I find the photo somewhere in my huge photo bin, I will post the embarrassment for all to see. I always envied the fact the birds could fly, and I could not. As a kid I had dreams about flying through the skies. Those were the best dreams.
In the very beginning of my animal obsession, at around age 14, I began keeping reptiles. My first pet being a Bearded Dragon. I began breeding bearded dragons, a few species of snakes, and geckos. As I was finding homes for the babies, I realized how many unwanted reptiles were in need of homes. At that moment I decided I did not want to contribute to the problem of unwanted pets and began rescuing instead. It just felt like the right thing to do. Soon after the reptile rescuing began, I took in a couple of rescued smaller birds, a green cheek conure, painted conure, and cockatiels. Don't get me wrong, I love reptiles and always will, but I find birds to be completely and utterly fascinating. They are such deep complex souls. So began my journey with the parrots.
Eight years ago Remwaldo the Timneh African Grey came into my life and my home. Granted, I had smaller conures and cockatiels before Remy came into my life, but this is the guy who opened my eyes to how extraordinary these animals truly are. Through him I was introduced to the world of Parrots--and the good and the bad things that come with this knowledge. Over the years I took in rescue cases here and there, but never had the resources to really feel like I could make a difference.
Now married to a partner who shares my love (and workload) for these animals, and with a house of our own, we have decided to open our home and dedicate our time to parrots in need. Every person can make a difference in one way or another, and I strive to be a part of it. I have found my niche in this huge world. This is what I live for.
Supplies, cages, medical bills, food, and utilities--aside from our wonderful supporters, every penny is paid out of our pocket--straight from our hard earned paychecks. This is a passion that only like-minded people understand. Every penny spent on saving these animals, every second of time is well worth the outcome of seeing them recover from bad situations and being adopted into a loving, permanent home. No other feeling can compare.

Additional adoption info
It is our goal to find permanent loving homes for our rescued parrots. More than likely they have already had a rough start in life. During the time they stay with us we get to know them very well. We only adopt out parrots if we know they are suitable for a home. Aside from any medical issues, much time is spent on training and enrichment. From many years of working with these complex minds we have discovered that the parrots choose their owners, not the other way around.
Right now we will do local adoptions only. We may consider prospective adopters who are willing to drive to our facility and meet the bird(s). It is important to us that before adopting, the bird is somewhat comfortable with you, and you are comfortable with them. Birds can be a lifelong commitment, so we strive to match the birds to the right owners for a lasting relationship.
Here is the process broken down into steps:
Fill out our adoption application- Please keep in mind you may state a specific bird or species you are interested in, but the bird will have to choose you!
Once reviewed, if it seems like a good fit I may request a home visit or several photos of your setup, depending on your distance from our home.
A phone interview will be done. Don't worry! I really am a nice lady--I'm just looking out for the bird's best interest!
If everything looks good, I will give you the OK to come for a visit. Depending on the bird, several visits may be needed to become acquainted. We have a very comfy couch here and snacks if you don't mind hanging out with us and your new potential family member!
Before taking your new family member home, you will be required to sign our adoption contract. (Sample available on our web page)
Adoption fees may be paid with cash or check. If a check is written we ask that it is either made out to our food/toy supplier or to our veterinary fund. ALL proceeds from adoptions go directly back into helping more parrots in need.
