"Everyone deserves a second chance, whether they have two legs or four," is our motto.
In 2012, PAWS began a "New Leash on Life" (NLOL) dog rescue/training program, partnering with the Pamlico Correctional Institution in Bayboro, North Carolina.
The NLOL program takes rescued shelter dogs and pairs them with carefully selected inmate trainers for the betterment of both. Dogs become socialized, well-mannered canine good citizens, and inmates develop a sense of teamwork, responsibility, pride and accomplishment.
Every eight weeks these canine companions graduate and go home with their new adoptive families, and a new group of doggie students enter the program. You, too, can give a fur-ever home to one of these deserving dogs. Start today!

Located in the small Town of Oriental (pop. 900), PAWS New Leash on Life program serves all of Pamlico County (pop. 13,000) and surrounding counties (Craven, Carteret, Beaufort, Lenior, etc.) in Eastern North Carolina.
We also place our "New Leash on Life" (NLOL) trained dogs outside of our local area, still requiring doggie "meet and greets" and home visits be made.
Additional adoption info
Our "New Leash on Life" (NLOL) adoptions require a completed Terms of Adoption agreement, Adoption Application and a home visit. The $200 adoption fee is due only when you receive your dog.
The fee includes testing for parasites, vaccinating against distemper, parvo, rabies and bordetella; de-worming, heartworm/flea/tick prevention medications, and altering.
Adoption can begin with a call or email to PAWS. After discussing your needs with a PAWS volunteer, complete and return the forms found on our website, pamlicopaws.net
Applications are collected, "meet and greets" are arranged, and if it's a good match, home visits scheduled. If you live out of the area, we partner with other rescue groups willing to visit you at home.
If selected to adopt the dog who captures your heart, you can attend your dog's graduation ceremony at the prison and take home a wonderful, well-trained and loving, lifelong companion.
