Shelter FAQs

While our mission remains focused on providing excellent shelter and care to pets in need, the SHS has evolved to develop proactive strategies aimed at combating its root causes. As we respond to the immediate needs of displaced animals, we also offer services that help owners keep pets at home. •Adoptions at the SHS are designed to set families and pets up for successful and lasting relationships. . . •Affordable veterinary and spay/neuter services enable pet owners to provide their companions with the medical care they need and deserve. . . •Humane Education programs share information on responsible care with current and future pet owners. . . As we work to help pet owners make responsible choices for their best friends -- decisions that will keep them at home where they belong -- we are always here for the lost, abandoned, neglected, and unwanted animals who need us!
Serving Spartanburg County Since 1964 The SHS is located at 150 Dexter Road in Spartanburg. In 1964, a group of concerned citizens led by Mary Frances Grimes incorporated the Spartanburg Animal Welfare League (SAWL) to provide a humane method for managing the county's homeless animal population.

Additional adoption info

Thank you for choosing to look for your new pet at the SHS!

There are always many wonderful and loving animals available for adoption. Dogs and cats are most common, but small animals, like rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters, as well as large animals, like horses, are also in need of a new home.

We are open six days a week, making it convenient for you to stop by for a visit.

Why adopt from the SHS?

The Spartanburg community continues to produce many thousands of unwanted animals every year.

As the only open admission animal shelter in the county, the Adopt Your New Best Friend! SHS provides for the temporary needs of these pets. But we need your help to provide them with permanent homes!

Adoption fees offer incredible value at $85 for dogs and $49 for cats. These fees include spay or neuter surgery, permanent microchip identification, as well as many other perks.

We also offer low-cost veterinary services for adopters. In other words, we are committed to your match being a success!

Just as importantly, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped to give a loving animal a much deserved second chance.

Remember, you will need some supplies for your new pet. You can purchase much of what you will need at the Spartanburg Humane Society Save-A-Pet Store, and all proceeds benefit the homeless animals in our care.
