About Us
Who We Are

Kenosha County Humane Society dba Safe Harbor Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves the Kenosha County area. Safe Harbor takes in nearly 3800 animals each year and places the majority of these animals into good homes.
Our Mission

Our mission is to house, care for, and find loving homes for animals orphaned, abused and neglected in Kenosha County.
Our History

Incorporated in 1916 as a boarding facility, Safe Harbor has taken on many forms. From a boarding facility, to a city pound attached to the fire department, to a humane society serving all of Kenosha County, Safe Harbor Humane Society has grown with our community, acting as an open admission shelter devoted to saving the lives of as many pets as possible. Our current site is nearly 30 years old and holds 100 cats and 42 dogs. In the last few years, we were fortunate enough to add a veterinary suite to the building and hired a veterinarian in 2011.
Why We're Here

Our purpose is to improve the care and treatment of animals in our community. We work to find homes for thousands of unwanted and abandoned animals each year and help to reunite lost pets with their families. We firmly believe that the lives of animals will be greatly improved through aggressive spay/neuter programs, increased adoptions and public education.

Steps to Adoption

Visit our shelter and see if any animals interest you.
Fill out our Adoption Form. Applications for adoption are also available at the shelter in paper form.
Once the application is filled out, we can take the animal out for you and you can interact for a while. We stop showing animals 30 minutes prior to close (so we can give animals medication before we leave.) If you have previously filled out an application and it has been more than 6 months, we will ask you to fill out another. It usually takes about 12-24 hours to process the application.
Before we can adopt out the animal, family that will be around it on a daily basis must come and interact too.
All of your current pets must interact with the new pet.
If you do not hear from us within 24 hours, please call to verify that we received your application. If you are declined for any reason, we will tell you why. If you have not heard from us within 5 business days, please feel free to call.
If you have received notice of your approval for adoption, you will be asked to come in, pay your adoption donation and take home your pet.
If, for any reason, this adoption does not work out, you sign a contract that you will bring the animal back to us.
Requirements for Adoption

If you rent, we require your landlord's phone number. We will contact him or her regarding your adoption.
If you are adopting a dog, it must not be left alone for more than 8 hours at a time. Puppies are allowed to be left 4-6 hours depending on their age.
You must be serious about keeping the animal as a lifetime companion. It is very stressful for them to go through multiple homes and can cause behavioral and mistrust issues.
If you are interested in declawing a cat, we ask that you adopt a cat that is already declawed. You are not to have any animal adopted from Safe Harbor declawed. It is inhumane to declaw a cat. It can cause arthritis and behavioral issues.
