In 2004 we ended our contract with our two local counties, giving up our duties as the county animal shelter/pound, in order to get back to our true mission of being an SPCA. This puts us in a position to have no guaranteed income; we depend solely on our generous donors to keep our doors open. We are a no-kill shelter now, meaning no adoptable pet will be euthanised here. We are a small shelter in a very rural, economically depressed area. We strive to acquire grants from different foundations that can help us in our mission of caring for unwanted pets, and that can impact our community in positive ways, such as offering low cost spay/neuter clinics.

We serve Accomack and Northampton Counties, which are our local adoption areas. We adopt to families outside of our local area and to neighboring states.
Additional adoption info
To visit our kennel, proper footwear is required; due to safety concerns, we no longer allow flip flops, high heels, or bare feet. Our adoption process starts with visiting an animal. All members of the household must meet the pet, and if a dog or dogs are in the family, they must also come for a meet and greet at our shelter. If the chosen pet is a good match for the family an adoption application is filled out. If approved, the adoption fee is $120 and the new family member can go home usually the next day. We only accept cash or checks-no cards of any kind.
