Homeward Bound Pet Shelter

Animal shelter in Decatur, IL

Homeward Bound Pet Shelter has operated as a no-kill facility since April 2002. In July 2005, Homeward Bound became a division of Macon Resources, Inc. a non-profit agency that provides services to children and adults with disabilities. Homeward Bound is a successful job training program for people with disabilities. The mission of Homeward Bound is to shelter and rehabilitiate relinquished cats, kittens, dogs and puppies until they can be permanently adopted into loving homes. Homeward Bound Pet Shelter operates from an 8,000 square foot building with large fenced play yards, seperate kennel areas for large and small dogs and studio apartments for our cats. We also have seperate isolation and quarantine areas for our pets as well as a medication administration room. HBPS also has loving foster parents who assist with our pets. Our resources are committed to providing quality care around the clock, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We operate solely on donations, fees and grants; we receive NO funding from city, county or state government.

Shelter FAQs

Decatur, IL and surrounding communities in Macon County; we work with shelters and rescues from all over the state of Illinois as well as adjoining states to take animals that are at risk of being euthanized and from breeder releases and puppy mill situations. We do not ship animals but will work with adopters from anywhere to arrange for them to adopt.

Additional adoption info

An adoption application listing a veterinary reference as well as three personal references is required. Potential adopter must be current with vaccines and heartworm and flea preventative for currently or previously owned animals to qualify. We do not adopt to outside only homes. A fenced yard is not required for every adoption but is preferred. Home visits are conducted when warranted. Adopters must sign a contract agreeing to take pet for vet visit (complimentary by 2 local vets) within 14 days of adoption and allow 30 days for pet to adapt to new environment. If adopter no longer wishes to keep pet they must contact HBPS regarding return. Intakes are based on space available and passing Safer-style temperment testing. Fees for owner surrenders vary depending on whether the animal is altered and current on vaccines. Fees fees for adoptions vary depending on species and age of animal.
