Habitat for Horses is the largest equine rescue organization in Texas. We are accredited by GFAS and continue to meet their strict standards for the care of each animal we bring in. We are a no kill rescue and believe that each animal has value. We have many, many horses to choose from and are very careful about our placements. We want what is best for the horse and adopter alike!
We are located in southeast Texas. We don't transport adopted horses (that is the responsibility of the adopter.) And, if the adopter were to return the horse, again the adopter is responsible for the transportation back to the ranch. This is one reason we do not adopt outside the state of Texas.
Because it is important to us to know that the horse and their new parents are a good fit, we also require that adopters spend time with their prospective new family member which means a trip to one of our ranches :) Adopting because you like the look of a horse or because they have a good profile sets up the horse and adopter for a failed adoption - meaning the horse is returned to us and that is hard on the horse.
We also do follow-ups on our adopted horses! This is an important process as that is how we insure the horse is being well cared for and not in any danger. If you live in a state where we don't have a lot of contacts we have no one to swing by and check on the horse if that is ever needed.
Additional adoption info
Our first step is the adoption application! The application covers a background check, references and general information to be kept on file with Habitat for Horses. Once the background is cleared and the references are checked, you will complete a property inspection report to insure the property is horse safe. All of our requirements can be found on our website (www.habitatforhorses.org) under the "Adoption Process" heading. After your property inspection report is cleared, you will be notified by phone and by email and then able to adopt. Our fees vary with each horse and range from $100 for a companion and up to $1000.00 for a trained and rid-able horse. We reserve the right to adjust an adoption fee pertaining to any horse with extensive training and/or exceptional background or history.
