Shenandoah Valley Dog Rescue

Dog rescue in Front Royal, VA

We are a small group of volunteers committed to making a difference in the area of dog overpopulation. We rescue dogs mainly from rural shelters where adoption rates are low and intake is high. We bring the dogs into the safety of foster care and immediately have them wormed, vet checked, updated on shots, tested for heartworms, and start them on preventatives. If they are unaltered, we schedule their surgery upon arrival. If they are still in our care on the day their surgery is scheduled, we absorb the cost of the spay/neuter. If they are adopted prior to their surgery, it is the responsibility of their new family to schedule and pay for their surgery. We do not hold dogs in our care if we have someone willing and able to provide it with a forever home. For every dog that goes to it's new home, a space frees up for another dog in need. If we were to hold dogs under our care for a convenient time for their new family to take it home, there are others that will die in shelters because they have no where to go. It is beneficial for both the foster dog and the homeless shelter dogs to get the dogs in our care into an approved forever home as quickly as possible.

Additional adoption info

If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please send an email to svdogrescue@yahoo.com. We will send you an application. Once we receive the completed application, the process moves quickly and many dogs are able to be in their new home within a day or two. All of our dogs have adoption fees. All adoption fees go towards helping and saving homeless dogs. Some dogs have vetting needs that far exceed their adoption fees. Others may have adoption fees that more than cover their individual needs. We must be able to charge more for some dogs than others in order to help the ones that have health issues. On average, if we bring in an adult dog that needs to be fully vetted, it will cost around $300 for updating shots, worming, pull fees, vet check, heartworm test, and spay/neuter surgery. The price goes up drastically if there are any problems or health issues. The average adult dog costs much more than their adoption fee will cover. We use the adoption fee of our pups to offset the costs needed for the adults. Pups will need further vetting by their adoptive families. Pups generally require 3 sets of puppy shots, one rabies shot, and of course, the spay/neuter surgery. We begin their shots right away. We continue to fully vet them as long as they are in our care. Once a pup is adopted into it's new family, the remaining vet needs become the responsibility of their new family.

As most of you know, pet overpopulation is a huge problem which results in thousands of wonderful dogs being euthanized through no fault of their own. We want to make sure that we are not adding to this problem. If a dog is unaltered at the time of adoption, we require that the adoptive family preschedule and prepay for their new dog's surgery prior to taking it home. We do this to ensure that the surgery will take place.

Once a dog is placed up for adoption, they are posted with their pictures and profile. We tell you everything we can about the dog. We do our best to describe it's breed but our selection is just a guess. We try to determine if a pup will be small, medium or large, but again, this is our best guess. Sometimes we receive only one application on a dog. Other times, we receive multiple applications. If we have several to choose from, we always try to determine the best home for the dog. If we have more than one home that would be a great fit, we will choose the application from the final group that was submitted first.
