Turtle Gardens Spay Neuter Society

Animal rescue in Topley, BC

History

Turtle Gardens Animal Rescue (TG) was founded on April 8, 1988 to meet a desperate need for an animal shelter in northern BC. TG is a no-kill, stand alone shelter serving more than 30 communities. In the first year alone, TG adopted out 50 dogs and 25 cats.

After 20 years, TG remains the only shelter for unwanted animals in the area they serve. To date they have placed more than 4000 dogs into homes, averaging almost 300 dogs per year.

In January 1997 TG was incorporated, and achieved charitable status. As TG became known as the shelter of choice for unwanted dogs, it became necessary to expand. In October, 1998 TG moved to its present location on 27 acres of woodland and hills in Topley, BC.

Not only have the dogs led to the physical expansion of TG. The Labatte family, who run this valued agency, has also grown. At this time three generations of the Labatte family share their lives with formerly stray and feral dogs at TG.

The result of this family’s hard work and dedication can be seen in literally thousands of happy faces (people and dogs).

Rescue, Rehabilitation & Adoption

TG specializes in rescuing and rehabilitating stray and feral dogs. Many of the dogs who come into TG are second and third generation strays. Some come as owner surrenders, and sadly, several come from neglectful and harsh situations. With a genuine love for animals and belief in their ability to heal, TG welcomes them all.

The animals live with the Labatte’s in their homes as companions. In this way the dogs learn to adapt to new situations and develop vital doggies social skills which make them very sought after pets in the cities.

TG provides an option to Foster to Adopt. This helps to ensure the animal and family are well matched, if there is any uncertainty.

Adoption applications are available on the website. Home checks are required to ensure suitable placement. Adoption fees are based upon the age of the dog adopted, and all monies are used to fund the veterinary care and rehabilitation of the dogs.

All TG dogs are adopted already spayed or neutered.

Low Cost Spay / Neuter Program

Spaying and neutering dogs is one of the most effective ways of stemming the massive numbers of unwanted dogs and puppies. TG has instituted a low cost spay and neuter program thanks to a funding grant and the cooperation of all four local vet clinics. The grant is almost completely used and will need to be replaced to continue this very successful program.

TG’s vision for this program is to have all pets in northern BC spayed or neutered by 2020.

Community Outreach Education

A natural extension of the Spay / Neuter Program is the Community Outreach Education TG provides. Yvette Labatte goes into schools and local communities with TG dogs to help educate young people about the importance of spaying and neutering animals.

Sanctuary

TG is a permanent sanctuary and home to a handful of dogs who are not suitable for adoption due to their health of another aspect of their make up. These animals remain well cared for nd loved at their TG home.
