The Mitchell County Animal Shelter is located at 2492 Hwy 19E between Spruce Pine and Penland Road. We are in the Spruce Pine area in Western North Carolina in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We accept animals from Mitchell County residents only, but adopt to families from all over the country. Adopters are responsible for pick-up as we do not transport animals.
Additional adoption info
Most animals adoption fee is $85.00. Call about special promotions or discounts. This fee includes spay/neuter, dewormings, vaccinations (including rabies shot), and a microchip ID. Our vets spay and neuter both puppies and kittens. Some of our available pets are already altered. You can take your pet home with you right away! Some pets may require spay/neuter upon adoption.
We offer temporary foster for puppies or kittens that are to small to be fixed before they leave. You would have to be responsible to bring them back to MCAR for vaccines and for when they are at a good weight and/or age to be spayed/neutered.
Yes, we do adopt out of our area. No, we can not ship animals to you. If you are traveling to meet a shelter pet, please make arrangements before you make the trip. Call the shelter at (828) 765-6952 to make sure the pet is still available.
