We are a small group of animal lovers who wanted to begin a feline rescue organization centered around our ideas and beliefs encompassing those of the Humane Society of the United States, American Humane Association, SPCA and Alley Cat Allies. Combined we have all worked individually with feline rescue for many years and with different animal rescue organizations. We all have numerous feline companions of our own who bring much joy and laughter into our lives. We are concerned about feline overpopulation, illness, abuse, neglect and the many homeless felines in the world. We are best friends who came together under a common flag....CATS!
We are named for Merlin, a companion of one of our founders from 11 days to 11 years when he died of cancer. Her first rescue; many more have come since then but the task is overwhelming for one person. With the encouragement of her mother and three friends 'of a like mind' Merlin's Song was formed in March of 2003.
We came into being due to the number of healthy companion cats killed each year because no homes were available to them. Thousands of ferals are needlessly put to death when trap-alter-return would control the size of a feral colony. Many of these cats were once someone's pet who put them out to fend for themselves. One's that can be re-socialized or their young off-spring will be socialized and adopted to the right home. We are dedicated to saving the lives of abandoned, neglected and abused felines.
Merlin's Song was founded on the following beliefs:
We believe every cat has value and deserves a chance for a permanent home
We accept every stray cat that has a chance of adoption regardless of age, including those with treatable medical conditions and injuries, as long as there is space.
Merlin's Song accepts primarily stray, abandoned, injured and orphaned cats and kittens but makes every effort to assist with the re-homing of personal pets whenever space is available.
When one cat or kitten is adopted, another is rescued
We treat the cats in our care and make decisions for them the same way we do our own personal companions at home.
While waiting for a space, cats are placed on a waiting list and accepted as space become available.
We are strictly No-Kill and only euthanize cats that are too ill or injured to recover. Unless a cat can't recover, even with limitations, we consider it adoptable and will work hard to find a home for it. Until that home is found the cat will remain with us. If euthanasia is necessary it is by lethal injection only.
Cats entering Merlin's Song are not ranked, rated or graded. Cats that are older, injured, orphaned, pregnant, or who have behavior problems or treatable medical conditions are guaranteed a home with no time limit or monetary limitations.
We do not set a dollar limit on treatable medical conditions and are committed to getting the medical care needed so it can go to a loving home.
No time limits are imposed on the process of restoring a cat or kitten to well being or finding it the purrfect home.

We serve the Nash County and the Nash side of Rocky Mount. We are strictly a no-kill shelter and all rescues remain with us until they find their forever home or cross over. We care for feral colonies and as space allows trap them and work to socialize them (no limit on the lenght of time) and then adopt them into inside only homes. Merlin's Song is the only cat rescue/adoption organization located in this area and work diligently to save and rehome as many felines as possible. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit, all staffing is strictly on a voluntary basis so funds received are used strictly for the felines in our care.
Additional adoption info
There is an adoption application to complete (previous veterinary care, 2 personal references) and references are checked. However this should not hinder a first timer from applying as decisions are made on a case by case basis. The adoption contract is the finalization of your adoption and at any time the adoption is not working out part of our contract is that the feline return to our care. All felines are FeLV/FIV negataive and current on all their shots. The fees are $35 (not sterilized) plus a $25 refundable sterilization deposit which is returned within 24 hrs. of receiving proof of sterilization or if a donation a tax deductible receipt is sent at that time. All sterilized felines are $55. At the time of adoption you are given the foster parent's personal phone number and encouraged to call at any time with any question. The communication doesn't end with your adoption.
