ADOPTION PROCEDURES
First we ask that you come to the shelter and spend some time with the animal(s) that interests you and our staff. We also insist that you bring all the people living in the home with you to make sure that they all agree with the adoption. The kennel assistants will provide you with the maximum information available for that animal(s). We encourage people to take a lot of time in considering adoption, this animal will be with you for the rest of it's life and there is a lot of responsibilities in owning an animal. Please consider it's lifespan, the time commitment, expenses, etc.
Once you have decided on adopting a certain an animal you then fill out an adoption application designed to help us match individuals and their families with a companion pet that will be compatible.
If the application is approve (The LHS Staff reserve the right to refuse an application where they see fit, for any reason, at any time) you will then fill out an Adoption Agreement. In the Agreement you will agree to care for your new pet, provide all the necessities, have you pet spayed/neutered by the age of 6 months (if not already done), licence the animal, follow all animal laws and bylaws in the municipality in which you reside, etc. The Adoption Agreement is a legally binding contract that must be signed at the time of adoption.
You then pay the adoption fee (in cash or money order). If the animal is unaltered and over the age of 6 months an appointment is then made for the animal and you are told of when you can come back to the shelter and pick up your new family member. If the animal is under 6 months of age you sign on the Agreement that the animal will be spay/neutered by 6 months of age and the animal can go home that day. No unaltered animal over the age of 6 months will leave the shelter until after the spay/neuter surgery is completed.
1. All dogs and cats adopted from LHS must be spayed or neutered by six months of age (as stated on the legally binding Agreement signed at the time of adoption) or before going home. There are no exceptions.
2. We only adopt to people who come in to the shelter; we will not send animals to people.
3. We do not adopt animals as gifts; only the people who will own the animal can adopt the animal.
4. We do not adopt to people under the age of 18; ID is mandatory.
5. We do not adopt to people who rent from landlords that do not allow pets. Please bring proof in the form of a letter that the landlord of your residence allows pets.
6. Adoption fees are non-refundable. An animal can be returned to the LHS within 30 days without a surrender fee. After 30 days a surrender fee applies to return the animal. The original adoption fees are never refunded, so please choose wisely. This commitment should be for the rest of this animal's life.
Many of our animals have not been examined by a veterinarian. Our adoption package includes a free vet visit within 7 days of the adoption and 30 day free pet insurance that must be activated within 10 days of the adoption. Please make sure to take advantage of both of these.
