Yorkshire Terrier Wisconsin Rescue, Inc.

Dog rescue in Milwaukee, WI

Yorkshire Terrier Wisconsin Rescue, Inc., hereinafter acknowledged as Y.T.W.R. was founded on May 25, 2004.

We are a small non profit 501{c}3 organization of three Directors who are the primary volunteers. The President and Founder was the Wisconsin State Director for a national Yorkshire Terrier rescue group for three years prior to resigning to found Y.T.W.R.

She has owned Yorkies since 1984 {including rescues}, trained in obedience, CGC, TDI, agility, freestyle dance, tricks, drill team, rally obedience, and Therapy Dog visits as well as having been an assistant trainer for obedience classes and puppy classes and in the Yorkie realm is know as a YOYO {Yorkie Owned, Yorkie Obsessed}. She is employed full time as an Office Manager, is a Reiki Master and attends as many Pet First Aid Classes {having successfully used CPR on her own 4.75 lb. special needs female in Jan. 2006}, Holistic, Nutritional and Canine Behavior seminars/workshops as possible as well as volunteering at a local shelter.

The Vice President was a Wisconsin Regional Director for the same national group before resigning to become Vice President of Y.T.W.R.

She also is employed full time for an insurance agency, has attended a variety of the same seminars/workshops; attended obedience classes with rescue dogs for behavior modification, is a talented/gifted sewer and creates belly bands for the males and princess panties for the females as well as other unique items for sale at fund raising events. She fell in love with her first foster Yorkie, adopting him as her own; a sweet gentlemanly male at the age of 14.5 yrs. young.

The third director, Training Director, is an A.P.D.T. and C.P.D.T. certified professional dog trainer, member of the Delta Society, teaches obedience classes, clicker traing and behavior seminars at local shelters, and is Founder/Owner of Teacher's Pet Dog Training, LLC. She also continues to attend seminars/workshops.

We have three additional dedicated volunteers; volunteering their time and talents to fund raising events without pay.

We accept private surrenders, puppymill surrenders, and shelter rescues who have become overly stressed and need to be fostered in a private home.

We do not discriminate against age of the rescue.

The rescues are microchipped, spayed or neutered, receive necessary dental and/or medical care as well as receiving the vaccinations they need.

So often the shelter rescues are in desparate need of bathing and simple grooming that we will go to the shelter the day prior to the spay/neuter to do this. The rescues are in desparate need because they have either been neglected by former owners or have been strays and been on the streets for a considerable time and held at the animal control center{possibly dumped off somewhere by former owners"}.

This not only results in the rescue feeling better about itself, it also begins to build a bonding between the rescue and us. Being able to work closely with them in this "hands on" experience; offering scrumptious treats as we work our hands on their bodies, massaging as we shampoo, dry and groom - gently touching paws, ears, tail and under belly, letting them know we can be trusted. They are rewarded frequently with praise, hugs and kisses as well as treats. When they are reluctantly lead away from us to return to their kennel to await their surgery they have a look of once again being abandoned. We tell them we will be back for them. Maybe they understand and maybe they don't. I believe they do. They remember us when we return for them after their surgery.

Upon arriving at their foster home they are given time to familiarize themselves with their outdoor surroundings. When they are comfortable the resident dog{s} are gradually added to the outdoor environment as we supervise appropriate introductions.

Thereafter, the fosters are part of our families; eating nutritionally, having their own room {crate}, professionaly groomed and vetted as often as needed.

We do this because of our love for the rescues. Our rescue accepts Yorkshire Terriers and any mix thereof. In some instances we have taken in a small dog of another breed simply because it came from the same household or environment as the Yorkie or Yorkie mix.

Our prime need is financial donations. Many of our rescues veterinary expenses well exceed what we can realistically expect to recover through adoption fees.

Volunteers are always needed as well as craft{s} persons who are willing to donate their crafts to our fund raising events.

Additional adoption info

We try to keep our adoption fees to a minimum {hopefully covering the veterinary expenses}.

A fully completed adoption application is required; including personal and veterinary references. An in-home visit of the applicant is required with all persons and pets living in the household being present at the time of the visit.

All rescues will have been microchipped, spayed or neutered, received necessary medical care including vaccinations.

While in foster care the rescue's temperament is evaluated.

An adoption contract must be signed. This contract specifically states that in the event the adoptee{s} can no longer care for the rescue, the rescue must be returned to Yorkshire Terrier Wisconsin Rescue, Inc.

The adoptee{s} are encouraged to contact Y.T.W.R. with ANY concerns or questions they may have regarding the rescue.

We require being permitted to do follow-up communications and visits.
