After 12 years in rescue, "Pups" has just adopted out our 526th rescue! We are a very small, all volunteer group & all our rescues live in foster homes with families. We only board in emergency situations, if there is no foster home space available. We specialize in puppies that will grow to be in the medium to large/extra large size range. We do not handle any toy or small dogs. We accept pups as newborn/bottle babies whenever needed -actually we LOVE bottle babies! - & we prefer not to take any dogs older than 18 mos. We receive rescue calls from almost all East Coast states, but most of our rescues come from rural Va., Md. & everywhere in W Va. We always accept our dogs back into our program to be rehomed if for some reason things do not work out. We DO NOT euthanize except in cases of extreme aggression, repeated bites, or severe illness that is irreversible or causing pain & suffering.

Additional adoption info
-Phone call or e-mail to ask questions & exchange information - helps both us & the adoptive family to find the best possible matches for them to meet.
-Visits in the foster home(s) to meet & get to know any potential pups/dogs. As the foster family knows the dog best, they can form an opinion on the match between the potential family & selected dogs.
-Applications can be filled out at the foster home, or taken home to discuss within the family & then faxed to Pups. We DO NOT put our application on-line & we do not accept them in advance. We feel each family should be evaluated based on the specific dog they wish to adopt & whether that dog is a good match with their lifestyle & household.
-Pups reviews the application, checks on references given, esp. veterinarian references & previous dog owner history.
-We visit the home with the potential new family member. This gives them the opportunity to see the dog in their own home, we can answer any specific questions they have, & we can feel comfortable that the home & yard are safe for that specific dog - as is the case of a fence jumper for instance. We do not adopt to homes with invisible fences, outside dog pens, or doggy doors. All dogs must live inside the home as a family member.
-If everyone is satisfied that this is the right dog for this home & family, we then complete our contract & a spay/neuter agreement if the pup is under 6 months. We do not spay or neuter under 6 months, but Va. law requires that every rescue pup be spayed or neutered within 3 weeks of reaching 6 months. At that time, the new owner receives copies of all medical records, vaccinations, & a schedule for any upcoming vaccines or treatments that are due.
-The non-refundable adoption fee for a puppy is $125 plus a $125 deposit which goes into a spay/neuter fund. When the owner submits proof of S/N from their vet in the required time frame, we then refund the $125 spay/neuter deposit back to them. The non-refundable adoption fee for a dog already spayed or neutered is $250.
-We only do adoptions within a 75 mile radius of our home base. We do continue to check in with our adoptive families on a regular basis & Pups still hear from our very 1st adopted dog, Buster, who now lives in Ohio with his family & is almost 13 years old. Pups even keeps in touch with our dogs' families who have moved out of state since their adoption. We have dogs in 20 states & D.C., & we look forward to our continued e-mails, letters & pictures to keep us up-to-date so we can be assured that everyone is still happy together.
