The Greenbelt Humane Society is a no-kill cat shelter begun in 1996 by a group of volunteers in the local community. In 2001, after multiple fundraisers, donation drives and much community involvement, the GHS purchased the building at 1124 Water Street in Alden. Individuals and volunteers donated time, funds and materials to prepare the building for rental of the upstairs and the shelter on the ground level. In 2003, the shelter was licensed by the state of Iowa. In just two years time, over 100 cats were taken in off the streets of Alden and adopted into new homes.Through fundraising and grants from the Hardin County Community Endowment Fund, improvements were made to the building, including new windows, roof sealant and a new restroom, Fixtures, doors, rugs and other household items were also donated, making the GHS a homey, inviting environment for human and feline visitors alike. More recently, the building storefront has been painted and a new sign has been hung.
Today, the Greenbelt Humane Society is staffed by unpaid volunteer workers who love and care for the shelter's felines every day of the week. Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated.
