Taffy's Legacy Canine Rescue & Rehabilitation

Dog rescue in Kitchener, ON

At TLC, we are passionate about helping rescue dogs find their perfect humans. Our goal is to 'upcycle' homeless dogs by giving them the tools they need to succeed in their furever home. We accomplish this by having amazing fosters who volunteer their home, time and love to giving these dogs a second chance. In foster care we get to know their personality and their needs so that we can find the ultimate pairing of two-to-four-legger(s). We show them the ropes of being a human's best friend and then you -- the furever human -- can take it from there.

The majority of our dogs are rescued through the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and other remote communities in Northern Ontario and Quebec. TLC is not a rehoming agency, and will not be accepting owner surrenders.

We plan to set the bar high here at TLC with only the most ethical adoption and vetting protocols and standards. All dogs will come fully vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm tested and spayed/neutered.

Additional adoption info

Step 1: Complete an Adoption Application

Send your completed application to taffyslegacy@gmail.com. Please be as thorough as possible when filling out the application so we can make sure we find the best possible match for you! If you are interested in a specific dog, please indicate the dog on the application; that being said, all applications are considered 'general' and you only need to fill out ONE application with our organization.

Step 2: Application Review

We will screen your application to determine if all necessary information was provided. We will contact you to provide additional information if needed. If you have listed any 'Reasons to Return' we will ask you to elaborate so that we know what you are and are not willing to work with.

Step 3: Reference Checks

There are three (potential) parts to a reference check. Please make sure you have notified ALL APPLICABLE REFERENCES that they may recieve a call from a TLC volunteer.

(i) LANDLORD: If you rent your home, your landlord will be contacted to make sure you have approval to have a dog in your home. We understand that a landlord is not allowed to stop a tenant from owning a pet except under specific situations, but we want to ensure that the dog is going to a welcoming environment.

(ii) VET: A TLC volunteer will contact the veterinary reference you provided. We do this to ensure all your current animals are up-to-date on vaccinations, as well as neutered or spayed. If you currently do not have any pets, we will ask about the veterinary care that your previous pets received. You NEED to call your vet and give them permission to discuss your file with a TLC volunteer.

(iii) PERSONAL: A TLC volunteer will contact your personal references and ask them questions about you and your interactions with current or previous animals. If there are any concerns or questions after speaking to your references, we will contact you.

Step 4: Home Visit

TLC requires a home visit to determine that the dog will be living in a safe environment. This is also gives us a chance to get to know you, your home and lifestyle. It is the first time we get to meet and talk to you directly.

The home visit is very informal. We do a walk-through of your home to see all of the places the dog would have access to, as well as check out the back yard. All members of the household must be present for the home visit. If our volunteer has any concerns or suggestions, they will discuss it with you or will relay the information back to us. Volunteers are not authorized to tell you whether or not you are approved during the home visit, this is up to TLC’s Core Team.

Step 5: Approved Adopter

Once we have had a chance to review all of the pieces of your application, we will send you an email letting you know you are an approved adopter. From there, you can request to meet with a current dog in care, or wait until a good fit comes along. Once you have become an approved adopter, you don't need to restart the application process for every dog you're interested in. You simply need to send us an email and we will let you know if we feel the dog is a fit or not.

Please note that we do not guarantee a specific dog once you are an approved adopter. Some dogs receive many applications and we may allow multiple applicants to have a meet and greet with the dog in order to choose the home that we feel will be the best fit.

Step 6: Meet & Greet

We are a foster-home based rescue so all of our dogs are located in foster homes. Our foster homes put a lot of time and energy into providing a stable environment for our dogs. We do not arrange meetings between individuals and our dogs until a potential applicant has been approved through the adoption process. Once an applicant has been approved, we will connect you with the foster home to set up a time to meet the dog or dogs that you are interested in. All applicants are required to meet the dogs at their foster homes.

Step 7: Follow Up & Finalization

We will email you the adoption contract. Once the contract is signed and sent back along with the adoption fee, we will arrange with the foster home for you to pick up your new addition!
