Zero Stray Pawject Inc

Dog rescue in New York, NY

OUR MISSION:
Our mission, in the regions in which we operate, is to systematically eradicate the problem of stray dogs by addressing the root causes. To do so, we collaborate with national and local governments on public policy actions that combat these root causes.

In parallel we help take stray dogs off the street, house them in foster care or shelters according to “The Bill of Rights”, while actively trying to find appropriate families to adopt them.

To achieve this mission we collaborate with local foster families and non-kill shelters to whom we provide funding as well as expertise in marketing, logistics, and administration.

We are not reliant on public funding; we are exclusively financed by private donations.

OUR WORK:
we work on three levels.
1. Lobbying for nationwide public policy changes (currently in Greece).
2. Municipality and Regional Actions to reduce the abandonment of new dogs that become stray and tackling irresponsible dog ownership that leads to strays.
3. Local shelter support of shelters that comply with the "Bill of Rights".

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process consists of:

1. A telephone/ FaceTime/ Skype call where we will ask questions to ensure best fit. This is also a chance for you to ask questions about the dog and our organization. We do not work with questionnaires as we prefer a good conversation. We prefer to see each other on a Skype or FaceTime call as it makes everything so much easier. We will be very transparent about everything we know about the dog as we really want this to work out!

2. If during the first Skype/ Facetime call, we all have the feeling that the dog could be the right fit, we will choose 2-3 families and carry out a home visit WITH the dog. For us it is important that the dog and new owner have a connection. We take great length to bring a dog over from Greece and really want to ensure a successful adoption. A dog is for life.

3. We then ask for a reference from the vet.

4. We work with an adoption contract and take an adoption fee. The fee includes costs for a blood test, vaccinations that are required to enter the U.S., neutering and micro chipping. The fee does unfortunately only reimburse a tiny fraction of the costs that our organization has for bringing over a dog from Greece to the U.S., but we want to ensure that people are serious about adopting.

5. At the handover, we provide the dog's pet passport, which contains his microchip number, so that the dog can be registered under the new owner’s name. The pet passport contains all his vaccinations including his last rabies vaccination and his anti-parasite treatment. All dogs are of course dewormed. Our dogs have been tested for Mediterranean diseases. All the dogs medical records including the blood test prior to travel will be handed over to the new owner, too.

6. After getting adopted, we always stay in touch with our adopters. Our focus of Zero Stray Pawject is to rather tackle the root cause of stray dogs within Greece. But of those dogs who we bring over, we try to personalize the adoption process and are there every step of the way, even after the new family has adopted from us, which distinguishes us from other organizations who adopt out many hundreds or thousands of dogs per year.
