Story
Loki is a 2-year-old male Border Collie mix is the sweetest boy ever. Weighing 60 pounds, he’s a big snuggler who thinks he’s a lap dog, always ready to climb onto his humans for cuddles. He loves to give hugs, and will put both paws on your shoulders and nuzzle into them. This quirky pup also likes to lay down to eat his food (kind of like the rest of us who eat on the couch!). Loki has made great strides in house training and does well with potty breaks every 3-4 hours. At night, he might have an accident, but he adapts well to pee pads if needed. He isn’t crate-trained but does well sleeping in a separate room, where he’s calm, quiet, and non-destructive. Loki is pretty quiet overall, and while he loves being close to his humans, he settles well when left alone for a few hours. While he’s curious and playful with other dogs during slow introductions, he may need to be an only dog or live in a home with an experienced owner willing to work through some resource-guarding behavior. He is okay meeting other dogs if they are outside together, but inside gets a little bit trickier, so he has his own room that he seems very happy with. When it comes to cats, Loki shows curiosity without aggression and could likely share a home with feline friends. He loves all people, and has done well with older children, but his excitement and tendency to jump might be too strong for very young children. Loki is moderate-energy—content with lounging around but also enjoying bursts of playtime, especially fetch with tennis balls or toys. Loki is so smart and playful—he is happy to toss his toys around to himself and pounce on them, or bring a toy to you if you can't reach! He is affectionate, smart, and eager to please, making him a great addition to any family. A fenced yard is recommended so that Loki can explore outside, then after his adventure he's happy to return to his favorite place—right next to his people. If you’re looking for a loving, goofy, and deeply affectionate companion, Loki is ready to fill your life with hugs!If you are interested in this dog, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling - https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $450. Story
Meet Frank, a 1 year-old Border Collie/Labrador mix. Frank is a spirited and lovable boy bursting with energy and affection! He’s the perfect balance of playful and cuddly—whether he is chasing his favorite ball or curling up for snuggles he is happy.Frank can be a little shy and nervous at first, especially when meeting new people or hearing loud noises, but once he warms up, he’s a bundle of fun and energy. He’s incredibly intelligent and absolutely adores puzzle and enrichment games, which keep his curious mind engaged. When he’s feeling comfortable, Frank can entertain himself with a ball for hours, showing off his playful and independent side. While he’s still getting used to walks and the sights and sounds of the outside world, Frank is great on a leash. He’s learning to build his confidence and will benefit from a patient and understanding adopter who can help him navigate his fears.Frank thrives on companionship and prefers to be around people and other dogs. Though he does okay in his own space when needed, he’s happiest when he’s part of the action. He’s also making great strides in training, quickly learning commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come.” Frank responds well to “no” and “down.” He’s still learning which furniture is ok to be on and which isn’t, so he’d do best with someone willing to continue guiding him in this area. He is eager to learn and he’s a fast learner, so with guidance, he’ll master it in no time. Fully potty trained, Frank is a dream when it comes to house manners.Frank’s favorite thing in the world? Snuggling up in your lap for belly rubs. He’s the ultimate cuddle buddy and loves to share affection. He’s good with cats and other dogs, but we’re not sure how he feels about kids yet. A quieter home would likely be best for him, as loud noises and yelling make him nervous. The only things Frank isn’t a fan of are car rides and being in a crate—he finds cars pretty scary and will need some time and patience to get used to traveling. While he’s not a fan of crates, he’s been a very good boy staying in a bedroom when his foster parents are away.If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion who’s smart, playful, and full of potential, Frank might just be the perfect match for you!https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $450. Story
ADMIRAL AND HIS BUDDIES WILL BE AT A MEET AND GREET/ADOPTION EVENT FRIDAY JANUARY 17 AT ARBEITER BREWERY 3038 MINNEHAHA IN MINNEAPOLIS 6-8:00. Come and cuddle and maybe go home with a friend for life. Admiral and his two siblings were part of a dramatic rescue that is described with words and pictures here. Copy and paste this in your browser. https://docs.google.com/document/d/17_OMYLUjJqXfGH0MgotuP7GgMOPNCCvEWrKZS2OsIYg/edit Making a long story short, 4 puppies were apparently dumped in a remote area where there was no obvious source of food, water or shelter. A Good Samaritan worked over a period of days to rescue three of them. Admiral was injured and needed immediate vet care, the other two needed a warm place to sleep and full food and water bowls. After bringing the three in from the cold they stayed in temporary foster homes until we could transport them to PUP in Saint Paul. Admiral is now healthy, at a good weight, and learning to be a real puppy. You can still see the results of his injuries, but they are well healed, now he just needs to grow some hair where it was shaved. He is the most outgoing of the trio and is playing happily with his siblings and the resident pooches. He is happy in his new environment but still needs work to develop trust with humans. He really wants human interaction but it is a bit scary. He has made amazing progress since his rescue in late December. The vet aged Admiral at about 15 weeks and he weighs 12#, so we expect his adult weight will be between 45-55#. We think he might be a Kelpie/German Shepherd X but that is best guess. 45-55# would be a bit big for a Kelpie, a common herding dog in the area, and small for a Shepherd, so that is probably about right. When we do DNA testing on most dogs from the area they have 20 or more breeds in their heritage. They always have some herding dog, some shepherd, some lab and nearly always some Chihuahua. We expect the same is true of Admiral. Now here is a strange one. Admiral is the smallest of the trio, but he has double rear dew claws. Only 6 purebred dogs have double rear dews and they are all giant dogs. We suspect Admiral might have 2-3% Great Pyrenees in his genetics. All three pups have unusually short tails. The early months are when puppy learns the social skills needed to be a skilled dog in dealing with other dogs and a good citizen in the human world. Adopters should be committed to getting puppy into lots of new and different human social situations, hearing vacuums, trucks, and rattling garbage cans, meeting people who are clapping, laughing, with hats, tools, bikes and skate boards. AND puppy needs many opportunities to meet and greet dogs of all shapes, sizes and dispositions. Just sharing a home with another dog is not as much doggie socializing as puppy needs. If good canine social skills are not learned and maintained during these early months, it will be very difficult to ever master them. Puppy play dates, trips to the pet store, puppy socialization classes and later, obedience classes are particularly important. If all this doggie time and involvement seems like a good idea, you are up for a puppy! As always, a tired dog is a good dog. Because of Heath’s background, the need to work on socialization can not be overstate. But, face it. That is the fun part. Admiral has been vet checked, vaccinated including rabies and de-wormed. He will need at least one additional puppy vaccination at the adopter’s expense. We do place puppies outside the metro area if a firm plan for the alter surgery is in place; we do not ship. His required alter surgery is covered by the adoption fee if it is done at 6 months at the PUP clinic. We require that he be altered at 6 months. If you are at least 21 years old and everyone in your household is on board with adopting a puppy, CALL 651-645-4370 between 7:00 am and 9:30 pm and we will return your call within 24 hours. If you elect to contact us via e-mail it may take several weeks for us to get back to you. Renters must provide proof that you are allowed to have a puppy. If you currently have a companion dog or cat please be prepared to provide a vet reference prior to adoption if requested.
