Story
Socialization/training: Charlie knows the commands Kennel, here, “no”, off, trade, leave it. We do our walks with a no pull harness and that help reduce his pulling. He is a high energy dog. He gets along well with other dogs but he does try to be fun police with some bigger dogs. He is a very well socialized and outgoing with all humans. He is a very sweet dog.  Crate trained: Yes, but he has some separation anxiety, so I use a belly band when I leave the house. Leash trained: This is a work in progress for Charlie. He needs a no-pull harness (Gentle Leader or Easy Walk harness) to reduce his pulling during walks. Activity Level: Charlie is your typical setter boy with high energy levels!  Fence: Yes, he will need a home with a physical fence, but 4’ height would be fine for him. He respects the fence in his foster home.  Behavior: Charlie is a true setter with a high prey drive. He loves toys! He's not destructive to property apart from toys, which he likes to play with. He is a goofy boy! He wants to learn and is very food and toy motivated, so he's easy to train. He is very affectionate, as he likes to kiss and nibble his human. He is more of a velcro dog and likes to be with his person, he is learning to not follow his person around inside. Medical History: Charlie is a lucky boy, as with the help of Above & Beyond, he survived stage 4 heartworm disease! He is clinically normal and he should be able to reach typical life expectancy for a setter. He is on a supplement for his heart and needs yearly echocardiograms. He is still on meds for separation anxiety. This dog is amazing and tough. Charlie is neutered, UTD on vaccinations, microchipped and on HWP.  Foster Comments: Charlie is not suitable for low energy environment, as he is a high energy boy and needs to be able to burn off his energy daily. He will need patience from his forever home; he had no self-control behaviors before coming to rescue a year ago, but he has learned a lot and has come a long way. His adopter will need to continue working with him. He will still steal food Absolutely no cats or small prey type animals in Charlie's home, he is likely to try to get them. Foster Location: San Antonio, Texas  Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $75.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Story
Socialization/training: Matilda is very timid and shy at first, but after she gets to know a person, she is not as fearful. She will sometimes cower when I come home from work, but becomes social again when she realizes it’s me. She occasionally does a submissive pee when I come in the door and get her ready to go outside. She is good with kids and good with men after a proper and gentle introduction. She is great with other dogs and loves to play. She has a prey drive and chases cats. I do not feel comfortable letting my cats roam free when Matilda is around. She is very good waiting for me to come home. The first few days she was here, she ripped a few dog beds and disemboweled all of her toys, but since settling in, she has been much calmer and is trustworthy to leave alone. She learns quickly, especially with the right motivation (chicken jerky and steak tips). She knows the basics, like sit and lie down. Crate trained: Matilda stays in a crate at night and is very content, especially if she can see or hear a person. I think with some training, she will do well in a crate during the day, though she is very good at home without a crate. Leash trained: She walks great on a leash, though sometimes gets excited and tries to run ahead. She will bark at other dogs when on leash, but might be taking social cues from the resident dog. She greets other walkers nicely and accepts their pets. Activity Level: Matilda has a good amount of energy, but not full-setter levels of activity. She loves to play with other dogs and go on walks. She is also very laid-back and doesn’t demand exercise. Fence: Leash walking would be sufficient, but a fence would be nice for her to explore the area around the home. If she did have a fence at home, she would need a 6-foot fence – girl can jump! She can leap over and crawl under my baby gate at home, so she has the capability to be an escape artist. Behavior: Matilda is super sweet and affectionate, often coming up for pets and love. She likes to jump when she’s excited! She also loves playing with toys and tries to engage the two resident dogs. She would be super social with them if they gave her the chance. She takes a while to warm up to people, but when she does, she is very eager to please, especially if there are treats involved. She also tries to climb into laps for cuddles. She absolutely loves her humans and is a Velcro dog. Medical History: Matilda was caught as a stray, but has no lasting medical issues. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and on monthly heartworm prevention. Foster Comments: Matilda is such an easygoing, sweet, beautiful soul and she deserves a home that will cherish her and shower her with as much love as she gives. She would do really well in a home with other friendly dogs who like to play. She takes social cues from more confident dogs. She should not be in a home with cats or other prey animals. And while she does well with kids, I’m not sure how well she would do in a home with constant activity. We have a quiet life here and she might get stressed out with more activity. She is a wonderful, loving, goofy companion. I would have adopted her if she was good with the cats! Foster Location: Temple, NH Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Sheba is a very bright dog! She is housebroken, learned basic commands quickly, and is spatially aware of critters in the yard. Whomever adopts Sheba will need to agree to being patient while she figures out that she is in a safe environment. She is randomly anxious about random people and gives them a wide berth, but warms up given time and patience. After arriving, she was fearful of lots of things—puffer coats, the laundry room, the screen door. She’s figured out she’s safe and adjusted accordingly. She’s so bright, so if she has some fears in her new home, give it time, help her understand, and she’ll be good. Sheba is so very affectionate and wants to sit on people’s laps, but respects boundaries. She has not been around toddlers or babies. She is in a home with lots of teenagers, Sheba loves them! There’s still a little puppy behavior that needs correction like jumping up on people and moving shoes around the house, but is very well behaved for her age. Sheba has been with two adult dogs the last few months and spent a week with another family with a dog. Her pattern of behavior with other dogs is to try to be in charge. To that end, she will growl and tussle (not biting). If the other dog is wimpy, she has continued to try to be in charge. Being put in her place once by a more alpha dog has resulted in her being submissive to that dog permanently. While the dogs seem to have worked out the pecking order and play together, we do feel that Sheba would do best with a dog that is clearly an alpha. She could also be a great only-dog. Initially, she was starting tussles over bones and food a lot; we haven’t seen this behavior in weeks, so we are confident that wherever she goes, she will find her place. Sheba has two cats in her foster home. She does like to chase them sometimes, but she will snuggle up with the more tolerant cat. She’s gotten the double-ninja cat clobber a few times and respected their space after that life lesson. Sheba gets carsick so she has been given chewable meclizine (non-drowsy chewable Dramamine) prior to getting in the car. Crate trained: Sheba is a gem in her crate and also goes into it by herself. No accidents and has only made noise overnight when she (truly) had to go out. She’s grown into a good sleeper and will sleep in on the rare chance the adults get to. She will also retreat to the crate if something new has made her feel nervous. (I’m looking at you, vacuum!) A crate in her forever home is advised. Leash trained: Sheba is leash-trained but is very strong and goes full-throttle on it. The athletic middle-aged people in her foster home do a two-hand leash hold when she goes outside on a full run, so this dog would not be a candidate for anyone with mobility or balance issues. A martingale-style collar is a requirement as she tries to back out of her collar when anxious. We are working on heeling on walks, trying to balance wearing her out and it being very cold! Even if the humans don’t, Sheba loves the cold and snow; the look on her face watching snowflakes and chasing them her first big snow was priceless. She would make a wonderful running companion after she learns how to walk in a straight line! Activity Level: Sheba loves to play with other dogs, loves going for walks and running outside. She is playful and appropriate in house, mixing it up with playing and watching birds in the window. She likes to snooze in her crate or a favorite chair, especially when there is a person in the chair! Fence: Fence is not required, but she would thrive with one as she loves playing outside. She would be able to learn an electric fence with training, but it will need to be done very carefully as her prey instinct is very, very high and she would take off running after birds in a heartbeat. Sheba springs over furniture like a deer, so there is a chance she could go over a 4’ chain-link. A no-fence home would require lots of exercise.     Behavior: Sheba is SO affectionate and eager to please with people. She’s been engaged, robustly playing, and happy. She wags her tail and smiles when you came to pet her!  Whomever adopts Sheba will have to be prepared to work with her if she seems anxious at first. She’s extremely food-oriented, so smart, and so affectionate, so however it starts, we’re confident that she will find her way with guidance. She’s a great work-from-home dog as she self-entertains, playing with toys like a kitten, chewing on bones, etc. Medical History: Sheba is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. She does not have any medical issues. Her next leishmaniasis test is due October, 2025.  This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Sheba is an eight-month-old Setter mix who smiles more distinctly than any dog we’ve ever seen. When she’s happy, she makes a big smile face. She has very soft, thick fur and though she looks like dad was a Golden Retriever, she is over half English Setter, a chunk of Brittany, and a chunk of “supermutt.” Her coat is spot on Golden Retriever color even with a blonde tail/rump. She’s a beauty.  Sheba is a very sweet and very smart dog. She has some anxiety, but we’ve really seen her grow over the couple months she’s been with us. She’s playful, LOVES to snuggle with humans, loves other dogs, and is well-behaved. She’s learned to wait to be invited into a lap, sits without asking for leash, food, pets, goes into her crate when she’s tired at night, and often goes to the door when she has to go out. A high fence or electronic fence with a clear-cut training plan will be ideal for Sheba as she loves outdoors and has a very high prey drive that keeps her entertained (birds, critters, leaves, sticks… nothing is safe!). As she is under a year, she is a fifteen-year commitment! We estimate her final weight to be 35 lbs.  She’s petite!   Foster Location: Madison, WI Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Socialization/training: Dallas loves everyone she meets! Dallas is still learning about house manners. Counter surfing is still a work in progress but does well with housebreaking. Crate trained:  Yes. Leash trained: Yes but she pulls. She needs a harness for walks to reduce pulling. Activity Level:  She loves to explore the yard. She is easily excited but loves to cuddle with her humans! Fence:  She will need a fenced yard, please. Dallas is a retired field trial girl. She loves to look for birds and gets very excited over new things. Her favorite thing to do is lay outside in the sun. No dog parks. No invisible fence.  Behavior:  Dallas is an independent thinker! She is active and loves new adventures and cuddle time! She loves her people and giving hugs. Medical History:  Dallas is microchipped, spayed, up to date on vaccines, and on monthly heartworm prevention. She has focal seizures for which she is on medication (Keppra ES). She has adjusted well to the medication and there have been no breakthrough seizures since being on the medication. Foster Comments: Dallas is the sweetest girl! She is quiet and if there is another dog in her forever home, she would do best with one other older dog, as she doesn’t want anyone jumping in her face. With her focal seizures, she does best in a quiet environment that is consistent with a schedule. Changes tend to cause breakthrough seizure activity. Foster Location:  Perry, GA Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Oboe loves all people including men, women, and children. He has met a person using a wheelchair, using crutches, and using a knee scooter and was not phased- I think he would make a great therapy dog. He has met and been fine with dogs in the home and dogs on walks. He has met dogs of various sizes. Oboe grew up around cats, and while I don't have any, he was not interested in a cat that approached us on a walk. Oboe is good around the house and knows "sit," "down", "stay" "come" "place" "leave it" and knows how to use a scratch board to file his nails. He also knows "pack your bags"- check out his video. He is food motivated and learns quickly. We have been working on training him to pass the Canine Good Citizen test. Crate trained: Oboe is crated at night and when I leave the house, usually for only a couple hours at a time. Sometimes he will bark for a couple of minutes before settling down. He has also been left loose around the house alone for up to 2 hours at a time and has had no issues. Leash trained: Oboe is generally very good on leash and walks with minimal pulling. He is happy when he sees dogs and people on walks and wants to meet them. Activity Level: Activity Level: Oboe is moderately active. Currently he plays each day with my dogs and goes for a 15-minute walk and that has been enough. He is still a puppy and loves to play with toys and will sometimes fetch. He settles well in the house. Fence: Oboe can go to a home without a fence that has an exercise plan in place. He does not try to escape fenced in areas and would do fine with a 4ft fence as well. Behavior: Oboe has the cutest “roo” and loves attention. He is a happy, playful puppy. He will lean right into you for petting. He will cuddle with you for a nap and is also fine with leaving me to my work while he finds a place to nap. Oboe loves to play with my dogs, but will guard his food from them. He can be fed with the other dogs while supervised so that no one visits anyone else's bowl. He has no problems with me touching his food bowl while he eats. He has a calm demeanor, but gets excited to see his favorite people.   Medical History: Oboe is neutered, microchipped, up to date on his shots, and on monthly heartworm prevention. The vet has recommended daily toothbrushing for him and yearly dental checkups for his enamel hypoplasia. Oboe does have mild hip dysplasia. The vet advised that surgery is not recommended as it is very mild. He has no problems using steps, going on walks, or playing with other dogs. He is due for his next leishmaniasis test in Oct 2025. Foster Comments: Oboe would fit well in most homes. Since he is a puppy, he needs a home that will continue his training. He has visited craft shows, softball tournaments, Lowe's, pet stores, and friends homes. He has taken it all in stride, loving the attention of everyone who will stop to pet him. Oboe has an appreciation for soft blankets and will sometimes drag his blankie around the house. He is the sweetest puppy that just wants to please his people.  Foster Location: Mount Laurel, NJ Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Cash is an easy-going love tornado. He gets along with everyone he meets: human, feline and canine. He currently lives with a cat and does not chase her or show any sign of aggression toward her. He is interested in playing with her and can get a bit too excited for her but corrects well. He does not live with other dogs in his foster home, but spent a weekend at a temporary foster home with two other English setters and played well with both. He has not yet met any children, although I expect he would be equally loving. Since he is a bouncing young dog who likes to jump up on people, it may be best for him to be in a home without young children. Cash adores human attention and quickly flops over for belly rubs. He comes bounding toward you when called. He knows “sit”, “down”, “come” and “stay”. He listens well except if there is a squirrel who has caught his attention. He had not lived in a house before his foster home and was not housebroken. He has not had an accident inside the house in several days, but may have an adjustment period in a new home. Cash would do well in most homes, but due to his high-energy level, would not be the best choice for very young children he may knock over. Crate trained: Cash is crate trained on command of “crate” and goes in with little problem. He sleeps well in the crate overnight and when he cannot be supervised during the day. Leash trained: Cash is still learning how to walk on the leash. He likes to get those extra steps in by zig zagging back and forth. He does pull toward squirrels and other critters. He walks well with other dogs. Activity Level: Cash is an energetic young setter with so much love to give. He spins and zooms around the house to greet people or when he comes inside from the yard. He loves to run around the yard scouting for squirrels and stretching his legs. Once he’s gotten his zoomies out, he will play nicely with his toys inside or curl up next to you for a belly rub. In the evenings after his walk he likes to stretch out on his dog bed, belly up.  Fence: Cash has not tried to jump the 4 ft chain-link fence, but did figure out how to unlatch the gate and went on a little adventure. Thankfully, he came back when called. He should do well in a fenced yard as long as the gate is well-secured. Behavior: Everyone who meets Cash falls immediately in love with him. He instantly puts a smile on your face with how sweet and goofy he is.  He loves attention and running around the yard. He can get into mischief if he’s bored and unsupervised, like chewing on television remotes or shoes that have been left out. But, if well exercised and provided lots of love, he is good about playing with his own toys or chewing on a bully stick. He is such a great dog and sure to bring any family a lot of entertainment and love. Medical History:  Cash is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. He is on monthly heartworm prevention. He tested positive for Lyme disease and completed antibiotic treatment. He tested positive for giardia and has almost completed his treatment. He has no problem taking oral medication with a little bit of wet dog food or cheese. Foster Comments: Cash is a riot and has been one of my favorite dogs to foster. You can’t help but fall in love with this silly, sweet boy. He is very easy-going, well-adjusted and just wants to be loved. I feel he would do well in almost any home situation, as long as his family is willing to provide him exercise, attention and put some time into working on some puppy-like behaviors. Cash is such a great dog and can’t wait to find his forever home! Foster Location: Ypsilanti, MI Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”).
