Story
Socialization/training: Charlie knows the commands Kennel, here, “no”, off, trade, leave it. We do our walks with a no pull harness and that help reduce his pulling. He is a high energy dog. He gets along well with other dogs but he does try to be fun police with some bigger dogs. He is a very well socialized and outgoing with all humans. He is a very sweet dog.  Crate trained: Yes, but he has some separation anxiety, so I use a belly band when I leave the house. Leash trained: This is a work in progress for Charlie. He needs a no-pull harness (Gentle Leader or Easy Walk harness) to reduce his pulling during walks. Activity Level: Charlie is your typical setter boy with high energy levels!  Fence: Yes, he will need a home with a physical fence, but 4’ height would be fine for him. He respects the fence in his foster home.  Behavior: Charlie is a true setter with a high prey drive. He loves toys! He's not destructive to property apart from toys, which he likes to play with. He is a goofy boy! He wants to learn and is very food and toy motivated, so he's easy to train. He is very affectionate, as he likes to kiss and nibble his human. He is more of a velcro dog and likes to be with his person, he is learning to not follow his person around inside. Medical History: Charlie is a lucky boy, as with the help of Above & Beyond, he survived stage 4 heartworm disease! He is clinically normal and he should be able to reach typical life expectancy for a setter. He is on a supplement for his heart and needs yearly echocardiograms. He is still on meds for separation anxiety. This dog is amazing and tough. Foster Comments: Charlie is not suitable for low energy environment, as he is a high energy boy and needs to be able to burn off his energy daily. He will need patience from his forever home; he had no self-control behaviors before coming to rescue a year ago, but he has learned a lot and has come a long way. His adopter will need to continue working with him. He will still steal food Foster Location: San Antonio, Texas  Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions. ##1782385##

Story
Socialization/Training: Dodger gets along well with our setters (an older male and female) and would do well in a house with other dogs. He is a bit of an attention hound and quickly approaches when our other dogs are receiving attention and tries to nuzzle his way in. He does seem to take cues from the other two dogs very readily. He is friendly and gentle with other people, children and dogs, but is not particularly interested in approaching other dogs we meet on our walks. He does not ever jump up on people. Dodger knows his name, and “sit”. He seems to really want to be a good boy, so he would do well with additional training. We have no experience with how he does with cats. Crate/House Trained: Dodger doesn’t like the crate and cries when crated. He sleeps through the night on a dog bed next to our bed. Leash Trained: Dodger loves to go for walks, so much so that he will shake and whine with excitement when we are getting ready to head out the door. It’s very cute. He is very enthusiastic on his twice daily walks (1-1.5 miles each) and he does pull, but will often pause if you touch him gently while walking. We expect he will get better as he has already shown a decrease in pulling. He is very interested in birds, bunnies and squirrels while on leash walks, and will pause to point and stalk if he gets near one. Activity level:  Dodger is pretty energetic and likes to run around our yard with our setter. He is also fine with chilling out, as he takes naps periodically throughout the day. Fence: A fenced yard is required for Dodger and ideally he would also love to have a dog door to access the fenced backyard. We have a 5ft fence at our house, and Dodger has never tried to dig under it or jump over it but if the gate is left open, he will escape. He will try to chase critters but if they go outside the fence, he won’t try too hard to get them. No invisible fence for Dodger please. Behavior: Dodger will make a loyal and affectionate companion. He loves his people and prefers to stay near them. He enjoys lying next to us on the couch and is a big snuggler and would be very happy in a home where he can do this regularly. It is very hard to believe he lived his whole life kenneled. He has adjusted remarkably quickly to house life with a dog door and fenced yard. He has 24-hour access to the dog door and yard but spends a lot of time by choice in the house with us and seems perfectly fine with long periods of down time. He really seems happy and comfortable with house life. Dodger loves affection but is also fine being at home with our other dogs and without humans present for hours at a time, and happily and gently greets us when we come back in the door. Medical History: Dodger is neutered, microchipped, up to date on all shots, and on monthly heartworm and flea and tick prevention. He was treated with antibiotics for a parasite and was just cleared in follow-up testing. He had to have many teeth removed, but still has most of his molars and all of his canines (and absolutely no issues with eating!). Dodger’s coat is starting to fill in a bit more, and a bi-weekly bath with conditioner helps his coat to stay soft. Foster comments:  Dodger is a sweet little bean. When he is excited, he sometimes lets out some setter roos and he sometimes roos to greet us when we come into the room or when he is excited to go on a walk. He does not bark very much at all. We have only heard him bark occasionally when he has chased a squirrel up a tree in the backyard or has found a bird nest, so he will be a very good neighbor dog. He sometimes steals our daughter’s socks. We find them in various rooms of the house, unharmed, if a little damp. He is ready to love you and will be a wonderful addition to your family! Foster location: Blacksburg, VA Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: He is very well socialized with people and other dogs. When he sees another dog out on a walk, he may give a sniff or remain focused on the walk. He is great with men and women. Only tested with older children and he did wonderfully— very calm around them. He would do best in a home without cats or small animals due to his high prey drive. He is a quick learner, eager to please, and food motivated. He knows sit, lay down, and “leave it” commands.    Crate trained: We have him crate trained and would recommend he is crated when left alone to avoid any unwanted behaviors. He rests very comfortably in his crate while we are at work during the day. We do not surpass 4-5 hours in the crate without a potty break and allowing him to stretch his legs in the backyard.  Leash trained: He is good on a leash, but probably would respond well to loose leash training. He does pull some on leash with excitement, but usually settles down once we have been going a while. He does lunge at small wild animals (squirrels, rabbits, birds) due to his high prey drive, but is neutral to other pets. He will “leave it” quickly when he sees a rabbit or squirrel and refocus on the walk. We use a front clip harness to reduce pulling and it seems to be effective.  Activity Level: We feel he needs intentional daily exercise. He needs long walks or runs daily of at least 30-60 minutes. He loves going on runs with us and has run up to 10 miles with ease. He would do best in a very active home. He is a big fan of tearing up dog toys, but is great about knowing what is safe to shred. He likes to play chase with our dog as well. He loves to go into the backyard and have zoomies several times throughout the day, but quickly settles back in inside the house and becomes a lazy lap dog. He is a perfect angel when he has been provided enough exercise. Fence: A fence is required for Cane as he loves to run around outside when he gets the zoomies. He has not tried to escape when left to play in the backyard for periods of time. A 4 foot fence or higher is acceptable. An invisible fence could be an option if properly trained, but could be problematic with his high prey drive.     Behavior: Cane is very loving and cuddly. He wants to be near his people at all times. He likes to spoon in bed with you or even just lay right on top of your chest. If you move to the sofa, he will move with you. If you are needing space, you can scoot him to the other end of the bed/sofa and he will settle there. Otherwise, he is very calm and stoic in the home until you get the leash out for his next walk! He gets very excited when his leash/harness are out! He is a big fan of walks, runs, or anything outside. Medical History: Cane is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm and tick/flea prevention. When he came to us, he had fleas and hookworms. He has had a vet check up since and has not had any issues. The vet has cleared him to be a happy and healthy boy! Being that he is a field setter, he is more on the lean side weight wise, but he is healthy for his type. Foster Comments: Cane is truly an amazing dog with a great disposition. In an active home, we are confident he will thrive and bring great happiness to others! He is a beautiful setter as well and turns heads everywhere we take him. We have brought him to soccer games, restaurants, hiking trails, and coffee shops, and he is always mild mannered and happy to be with his people. Foster Location: Huntsville, Alabama Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training:  Hans is a very friendly dog with people and with other dogs. He’s even thrilled about going to the vet’s office and takes a happy interest in every dog he meets there. While he’s been here, he has not been exposed to cats. He doesn’t jump on people and is comfortable in a household environment, especially couches, chairs, beds, and the kitchen. He knows “sit” and “no” and “kennel” and has a general concept of “come” and “stay.” Crate trained:  Hans is crate trained and sleeps at night in a crate in our bedroom. He also has a crate in the family room, where we leave him if we have to go out. He will occasionally use this crate during the day but prefers the floor or a couch. Leash trained:  This is a work in progress. Hans walks well on our morning walks with another dog. If we walk unaccompanied by another dog, he pulls. Hans is easily distracted by foxes, deer or any other moving animal, and wants to chase them, forgetting we are ‘walking’. Activity Level:  Hans is a high-energy dog with a very strong prey drive. He needs lots of exercise to dissipate this energy. He needs access to a large yard or a dog park. Fence:  Hans definitely needs a fenced yard with room to run. A physical fence would be best due to his strong prey drive. He has never tried to go over or under our fence. Behavior:  Hans is a young dog (with a lot of puppy in him) and still in the chew everything stage, so vigilance is required. He loves meeting new people and other dogs. In the house he plays with toys and with our resident setter, who is older and not as prone to play as Hans. He wants to be near people, either at their feet or on the couch next to them. When outside, he dashes around through the open area and woods we have fenced in, hunting for birds, squirrels, chipmunks, moths and falling leaves. Medical History:  Hans is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm and tick/flea prevention. He was anemic and had whipworms when he arrived at the shelter from which he was rescued. He’s been treated for whipworms and is no longer anemic. He’s being treated for diabetes insipidus, which is the type of diabetes that causes excessive thirst and urination but not insulin resistance. It is controlled by daily medication, which he is on and costs about a dollar a day. His adopter will need to continue his medication going forward. Foster Comments:  Hans is a smart and friendly dog who has seen his share of hardship. He weighed 22 pounds when admitted to the animal shelter. He is now over 42 pounds and is an extremely active and loving guy. He is very food motivated and a quick study. He wants to be outside but is comfortable in the house. If you are sitting in a chair, he will be glad to crawl into your lap. He would be a good companion in a household with another young dog he can play with. He needs unrestricted access to water due to his diabetes insipidus diagnosis. He’s a sloppy drinker, so the water should be placed in an area where a lot on the floor won’t damage anything. Foster location: Vienna, VA Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Otto will sit and smile for anything. He is eager to please. He knows, sit, down, touch and will come when called. We are working on a leave it and a stay. He is very food motivated and easy to train. He has not exhibited any fears. He gets along with everyone he meets. He loves all other dogs. We have not cat tested him. Crate trained: Yes. Otto eats his meals in his crate and readily sleeps through the night in his crate. We cover it and reward him for getting in with a kong. He has been left out of the crate in our home with our other dogs for more than 3- hours without incident. Leash trained: Otto walks well on a leash with a K-9 Bridle. He does not react to anything on our walks around the neighborhood. He will bark if startled but easily calms. He will pull if he catches a good scent or sees a squirrel but easily managed with the use of the bridle and a correction. I will send the K-9 Bridle with him to his forever home for easy, no-pull walking. Activity Level: He is good with a walk of a mile or so a day. He does get other exercise by playing with his foster brothers and following me around the house and yard. He can definitely settle in the house. He reads the room, if all the other dogs are running and playing he joins in. He loves a good game of tug. If everyone is relaxing, he will too. Fence: Otto would do ok without a fence if he has regular, daily walks and playtime. He is just starting to play with toys and his foster brothers. Our home is fully fenced with a 6 foot fence. He has never tried to get out but will try to sneak past you when you go out the front door. He wants to go with you! Behavior: This guy put the V in velcro. He is happiest when he is close to you and being pet. He is always up to do whatever you are doing. He does great in the car! He is so eager to please! He is food obsessed but has learned to stay off the counters and to not beg at the dinner table. Medical History: Otto is very healthy, neutered, microchipped, up to date on all shots, and on monthly heartworm prevention. His next Leishmaniasis test is due in May 2025. He is currently being treated for an ear infection and my vet recommends weekly ear flushes, which will go with him to his adoptive home. This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic and tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Otto is the sweetest boy. He wants nothing more than to be your constant companion. He has come a long way with learning to not always jump up for attention. He does great in the car and is a friend to everyone he meets. He will whine when he can't see his human but he will settle after a bit. Otto would do best in a home where his person is home or able to be with him as much as possible. He is a dog that can go to work with you. He does well with kids but he is still learning to not jump up on people when he first sees them. He does well with other dogs but likes to be the center of attention. He would be a great only dog or a buddy with another dog that does not get jealous. He gets along with all my dogs but if one of my dogs is getting attention he needs to be in on the action. I am willing to drive an additional 500 miles for the right adopter. Foster location: Long Beach, CA Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home.
