Story
Socialization/training: Charlie knows the commands Kennel, here, “no”, off, trade, leave it. We do our walks with a no pull harness and that help reduce his pulling. He is a high energy dog. He gets along well with other dogs but he does try to be fun police with some bigger dogs. He is a very well socialized and outgoing with all humans. He is a very sweet dog.  Crate trained: Yes, but he has some separation anxiety, so I use a belly band when I leave the house. Leash trained: This is a work in progress for Charlie. He needs a no-pull harness (Gentle Leader or Easy Walk harness) to reduce his pulling during walks. Activity Level: Charlie is your typical setter boy with high energy levels!  Fence: Yes, he will need a home with a physical fence, but 4’ height would be fine for him. He respects the fence in his foster home.  Behavior: Charlie is a true setter with a high prey drive. He loves toys! He's not destructive to property apart from toys, which he likes to play with. He is a goofy boy! He wants to learn and is very food and toy motivated, so he's easy to train. He is very affectionate, as he likes to kiss and nibble his human. He is more of a velcro dog and likes to be with his person, he is learning to not follow his person around inside. Medical History: Charlie is a lucky boy, as with the help of Above & Beyond, he survived stage 4 heartworm disease! He is clinically normal and he should be able to reach typical life expectancy for a setter. He is on a supplement for his heart and needs yearly echocardiograms. He is still on meds for separation anxiety. This dog is amazing and tough. Charlie is neutered, UTD on vaccinations, microchipped and on HWP.  Foster Comments: Charlie is not suitable for low energy environment, as he is a high energy boy and needs to be able to burn off his energy daily. He will need patience from his forever home; he had no self-control behaviors before coming to rescue a year ago, but he has learned a lot and has come a long way. His adopter will need to continue working with him. He will still steal food Absolutely no cats or small prey type animals in Charlie's home, he is likely to try to get them. Foster Location: San Antonio, Texas  Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $75.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Story
Socialization/training: Matilda is very timid and shy at first, but after she gets to know a person, she is not as fearful. She will sometimes cower when I come home from work, but becomes social again when she realizes it’s me. She occasionally does a submissive pee when I come in the door and get her ready to go outside. She is good with kids and good with men after a proper and gentle introduction. She is great with other dogs and loves to play. She has a prey drive and chases cats. I do not feel comfortable letting my cats roam free when Matilda is around. She is very good waiting for me to come home. The first few days she was here, she ripped a few dog beds and disemboweled all of her toys, but since settling in, she has been much calmer and is trustworthy to leave alone. She learns quickly, especially with the right motivation (chicken jerky and steak tips). She knows the basics, like sit and lie down. Crate trained: Matilda stays in a crate at night and is very content, especially if she can see or hear a person. I think with some training, she will do well in a crate during the day, though she is very good at home without a crate. Leash trained: She walks great on a leash, though sometimes gets excited and tries to run ahead. She will bark at other dogs when on leash, but might be taking social cues from the resident dog. She greets other walkers nicely and accepts their pets. Activity Level: Matilda has a good amount of energy, but not full-setter levels of activity. She loves to play with other dogs and go on walks. She is also very laid-back and doesn’t demand exercise. Fence: Leash walking would be sufficient, but a fence would be nice for her to explore the area around the home. If she did have a fence at home, she would need a 6-foot fence – girl can jump! She can leap over and crawl under my baby gate at home, so she has the capability to be an escape artist. Behavior: Matilda is super sweet and affectionate, often coming up for pets and love. She likes to jump when she’s excited! She also loves playing with toys and tries to engage the two resident dogs. She would be super social with them if they gave her the chance. She takes a while to warm up to people, but when she does, she is very eager to please, especially if there are treats involved. She also tries to climb into laps for cuddles. She absolutely loves her humans and is a Velcro dog. Medical History: Matilda was caught as a stray, but has no lasting medical issues. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and on monthly heartworm prevention. Foster Comments: Matilda is such an easygoing, sweet, beautiful soul and she deserves a home that will cherish her and shower her with as much love as she gives. She would do really well in a home with other friendly dogs who like to play. She takes social cues from more confident dogs. She should not be in a home with cats or other prey animals. And while she does well with kids, I’m not sure how well she would do in a home with constant activity. We have a quiet life here and she might get stressed out with more activity. She is a wonderful, loving, goofy companion. I would have adopted her if she was good with the cats! Foster Location: Temple, NH Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Sheba is a very bright dog! She is housebroken, learned basic commands quickly, and is spatially aware of critters in the yard. Whomever adopts Sheba will need to agree to being patient while she figures out that she is in a safe environment. She is randomly anxious about random people and gives them a wide berth, but warms up given time and patience. After arriving, she was fearful of lots of things—puffer coats, the laundry room, the screen door. She’s figured out she’s safe and adjusted accordingly. She’s so bright, so if she has some fears in her new home, give it time, help her understand, and she’ll be good. Sheba is so very affectionate and wants to sit on people’s laps, but respects boundaries. She has not been around toddlers or babies. She is in a home with lots of teenagers, Sheba loves them! There’s still a little puppy behavior that needs correction like jumping up on people and moving shoes around the house, but is very well behaved for her age. Sheba has been with two adult dogs the last few months and spent a week with another family with a dog. Her pattern of behavior with other dogs is to try to be in charge. To that end, she will growl and tussle (not biting). If the other dog is wimpy, she has continued to try to be in charge. Being put in her place once by a more alpha dog has resulted in her being submissive to that dog permanently. While the dogs seem to have worked out the pecking order and play together, we do feel that Sheba would do best with a dog that is clearly an alpha. She could also be a great only-dog. Initially, she was starting tussles over bones and food a lot; we haven’t seen this behavior in weeks, so we are confident that wherever she goes, she will find her place. Sheba has two cats in her foster home. She does like to chase them sometimes, but she will snuggle up with the more tolerant cat. She’s gotten the double-ninja cat clobber a few times and respected their space after that life lesson. Sheba gets carsick so she has been given chewable meclizine (non-drowsy chewable Dramamine) prior to getting in the car. Crate trained: Sheba is a gem in her crate and also goes into it by herself. No accidents and has only made noise overnight when she (truly) had to go out. She’s grown into a good sleeper and will sleep in on the rare chance the adults get to. She will also retreat to the crate if something new has made her feel nervous. (I’m looking at you, vacuum!) A crate in her forever home is advised. Leash trained: Sheba is leash-trained but is very strong and goes full-throttle on it. The athletic middle-aged people in her foster home do a two-hand leash hold when she goes outside on a full run, so this dog would not be a candidate for anyone with mobility or balance issues. A martingale-style collar is a requirement as she tries to back out of her collar when anxious. We are working on heeling on walks, trying to balance wearing her out and it being very cold! Even if the humans don’t, Sheba loves the cold and snow; the look on her face watching snowflakes and chasing them her first big snow was priceless. She would make a wonderful running companion after she learns how to walk in a straight line! Activity Level: Sheba loves to play with other dogs, loves going for walks and running outside. She is playful and appropriate in house, mixing it up with playing and watching birds in the window. She likes to snooze in her crate or a favorite chair, especially when there is a person in the chair! Fence: Fence is not required, but she would thrive with one as she loves playing outside. She would be able to learn an electric fence with training, but it will need to be done very carefully as her prey instinct is very, very high and she would take off running after birds in a heartbeat. Sheba springs over furniture like a deer, so there is a chance she could go over a 4’ chain-link. A no-fence home would require lots of exercise.     Behavior: Sheba is SO affectionate and eager to please with people. She’s been engaged, robustly playing, and happy. She wags her tail and smiles when you came to pet her!  Whomever adopts Sheba will have to be prepared to work with her if she seems anxious at first. She’s extremely food-oriented, so smart, and so affectionate, so however it starts, we’re confident that she will find her way with guidance. She’s a great work-from-home dog as she self-entertains, playing with toys like a kitten, chewing on bones, etc. Medical History: Sheba is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. She does not have any medical issues. Her next leishmaniasis test is due October, 2025.  This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Sheba is an eight-month-old Setter mix who smiles more distinctly than any dog we’ve ever seen. When she’s happy, she makes a big smile face. She has very soft, thick fur and though she looks like dad was a Golden Retriever, she is over half English Setter, a chunk of Brittany, and a chunk of “supermutt.” Her coat is spot on Golden Retriever color even with a blonde tail/rump. She’s a beauty.  Sheba is a very sweet and very smart dog. She has some anxiety, but we’ve really seen her grow over the couple months she’s been with us. She’s playful, LOVES to snuggle with humans, loves other dogs, and is well-behaved. She’s learned to wait to be invited into a lap, sits without asking for leash, food, pets, goes into her crate when she’s tired at night, and often goes to the door when she has to go out. A high fence or electronic fence with a clear-cut training plan will be ideal for Sheba as she loves outdoors and has a very high prey drive that keeps her entertained (birds, critters, leaves, sticks… nothing is safe!). As she is under a year, she is a fifteen-year commitment! We estimate her final weight to be 35 lbs.  She’s petite!   Foster Location: Madison, WI Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Dallas loves everyone she meets! Dallas is still learning about house manners. Counter surfing is still a work in progress but does well with housebreaking. Crate trained:  Yes. Leash trained: Yes but she pulls. She needs a harness for walks to reduce pulling. Activity Level:  She loves to explore the yard. She is easily excited but loves to cuddle with her humans! Fence:  She will need a fenced yard, please. Dallas is a retired field trial girl. She loves to look for birds and gets very excited over new things. Her favorite thing to do is lay outside in the sun. No dog parks. No invisible fence.  Behavior:  Dallas is an independent thinker! She is active and loves new adventures and cuddle time! She loves her people and giving hugs. Medical History:  Dallas is microchipped, spayed, up to date on vaccines, and on monthly heartworm prevention. She has focal seizures for which she is on medication (Keppra ES). She has adjusted well to the medication and there have been no breakthrough seizures since being on the medication. Foster Comments: Dallas is the sweetest girl! She is quiet and if there is another dog in her forever home, she would do best with one other older dog, as she doesn’t want anyone jumping in her face. With her focal seizures, she does best in a quiet environment that is consistent with a schedule. Changes tend to cause breakthrough seizure activity. Story
Socialization/training:  Axel is very treat-motivated and was the first of his siblings to learn routines like when its time to go to his crate. With some continued patience and training, he will learn what is expected of him. Housetraining is a work in progress but trending better. We are using a belly band and he is getting better at giving us the signs that he needs to go outside. His recall is decent but could use more work when he is distracted by creatures. He has respected the baby gates and barriers better than previous fosters. There are no cats or children in Axel’s foster home. He is very affectionate but not very respectful of personal space so he would need to be watched closely with toddlers or very small children for fear that he might knock them over. We don’t have any cats in the house but he has demonstrated a strong prey drive with the squirrels and chicken outside the yard. He would likely view a cat either as prey or something he can play with, although he is young enough that I am sure he could learn to coexist with a cat given appropriate training and time.  Axel has been living with a large pack of 12 other dogs. He has never demonstrated any aggression or dominant behavior. He likes to play with his siblings and with a couple of the other dogs in the pack but also seems comfortable doing his own thing. He quickly learned the pack dynamics and which dogs he could play with and which dogs wanted their space.  He would do best with a family with another dog to keep him company but could probably adapt to being a single dog as long as he got enough stimulation. Crate trained: Yes, Axel is crate trained and sleeps peacefully in one during the night. He knows he needs to go to his crate for meals and/or treats and then waits patiently to be let back out. He sometimes barks if he wants out of his kennel, particularly if others are moving around. Leash trained: He has gotten some leash practice since the weather has improved, and he is starting to walk very well on the leash. He will continue to improve with more practice. Activity Level:  Medium high. Axel is an energetic puppy and loves to play with toys, sticks, and other dogs. He will happily play and romp with reciprocating playmates. He has been very good at checking back in with me when in the yard but loves to run the fence line and bark at the neighboring squirrels and chicken. He is normally the first in his pack to want to come back inside, and once inside, his preference is for lap time on the couch. He likes to play with his chew toys if no lap is available. He also likes to park himself on the couch. Fence:  A fence is always preferred. He has not challenged the fence but we are confident that he would come back to us if he got out of the yard. Behavior: Axel is a sensitive lover. He loves to cuddle and get affection. He was terrified of the TV when he first arrived and would bury his head in your chest in an attempt to hide. He has learned to live with the TV especially when he has a person to give him love while we watch it. He has a sensitive nature so positive and constructive training would be essential. He doesn’t always respect the personal space of the other dogs and sometimes crawls over them to get into your lap. He loves toys but is particularly destructive with them. He likes to tear them to bits so some durable toys should keep him occupied for hours. Medical History:  Axel is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Axel is due for his next Leishmaniasis test in December 2025. Foster Comments: Axel is a sweet, affectionate and slightly shy boy. He was very timid and tentative when he first arrived and was scared of all the normal household sounds like the television or vacuum cleaner. With time, he has become much more comfortable with those things, although very loud and unexpected sounds still startle him. He is a playful boy who loves to romp and wrestle with his siblings and to play tug with his toys. Most of all, though, he loves to snuggle with his people. The living room sofa is his favorite location, especially if there is a person sitting there to cuddle with him. He is hugely affectionate and loves attention. Axel’s mom is a pure setter, but dad was a mix of setter, German shepherd, Brittany, and few other breeds, so he has a unique look. Axel is looking for a family that has time to spend with him, will continue to work with him on his training and help build his confidence and, most importantly, will give him lots of love and cuddles. Foster Location: Temperance, MI Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Castro loves people, dogs, treats, and nightly massages. He is spoiled and deserves to be. He has welcomed strangers into our house with tail wags. He is startled by noises but will not run to hide from them. He is a quick learner. During his time here he mastered the commands come, sit, kennel, and want a cookie :) upstairs, shake and he knows his name. He also mastered jumping on the sofa and bed for love rubs. He gets along very well with the 3 other dogs in his foster home with no issues. He loves to play and cuddle with the other dogs. Prior to arriving in the US, he spent some time in a foster home with several cats and he got along with them with no issues. Crate trained: He eats in his crate and does not bark when crated. He goes in willingly but expects a treat. He was initially crated when we left the house but now has free roam of the house with the other dogs. He is not crated at night. Leash trained: Castro has not gone on many walks due to the weather here. I’ve taken him to dog-friendly businesses and Petsmart. He does best with a harness. He doesn’t pull but will weave at times because of his eyesight. We haven’t encountered any squirrels, so I’m not sure what his reaction will be. He has stopped walking when he hears birds to try to locate them. He has not been dog-reactive when seeing another dog. Activity Level: Castro is your typical run, play, chase, repeat Setter in the yard! Inside the house, it’s all about the toys! He has no preference- squeakers, stuffies, bones, etc.- he loves them all. Inside or outside, he’ll play with the resident dogs. He also enjoys sitting on the sofa next to a fur friend or his humans for cuddles and rubs. Fence: A fence is required. I might consider an invisible fence but will need to talk to potential adopter first. Behavior: Castro seeks affection, especially when his people are in the bathroom; in other words, he is a bathroom stalker! Definitely not a velcro dog but enjoys his cuddle time. He is not a fan of loud noises and will startle but quickly recover. I believe it might be that he can’t see where the noise is coming from. Even though he lost an eye, he doesn’t see the world any differently. He can still spot a bird he hears chirping in a tree, notice a crumb of food dropped in the kitchen, spot the toy he wants to play with in one of the other dog’s mouths, and all the other good things life has to offer. Medical History: Castro is missing his left eye. He was found with an empty eye socket, which was surgically closed to prevent infection. He has adjusted quite well to using only one eye. He is neutered, microchipped, current on all vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention. His next Leishmania test is due no later than 11/6/2025. Foster Comments: I could write pages about this sweet boy but I’ll try to keep it to a paragraph. Castro is sweet, gentle, playful, and quite intelligent. He speaks 2 languages, Greek and English, and completely trained us during his time here. Are you looking for a friend, a cuddle buddy or company in the bathroom, then I suggest you apply for this boy. He must have furniture privileges in his forever home and I would prefer him to have another fur friend in the house. Foster Location: Schaumburg, IL Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home.
