Story
Socialization/training: Charlie knows the commands Kennel, here, “no”, off, trade, leave it. We do our walks with a no pull harness and that help reduce his pulling. He is a high energy dog. He gets along well with other dogs but he does try to be fun police with some bigger dogs. He is a very well socialized and outgoing with all humans. He is a very sweet dog.  Crate trained: Yes, but he has some separation anxiety, so I use a belly band when I leave the house. Leash trained: This is a work in progress for Charlie. He needs a no-pull harness (Gentle Leader or Easy Walk harness) to reduce his pulling during walks. Activity Level: Charlie is your typical setter boy with high energy levels!  Fence: Yes, he will need a home with a physical fence, but 4’ height would be fine for him. He respects the fence in his foster home.  Behavior: Charlie is a true setter with a high prey drive. He loves toys! He's not destructive to property apart from toys, which he likes to play with. He is a goofy boy! He wants to learn and is very food and toy motivated, so he's easy to train. He is very affectionate, as he likes to kiss and nibble his human. He is more of a velcro dog and likes to be with his person, he is learning to not follow his person around inside. Medical History: Charlie is a lucky boy, as with the help of Above & Beyond, he survived stage 4 heartworm disease! He is clinically normal and he should be able to reach typical life expectancy for a setter. He is on a supplement for his heart and needs yearly echocardiograms. He is still on meds for separation anxiety. This dog is amazing and tough. Foster Comments: Charlie is not suitable for low energy environment, as he is a high energy boy and needs to be able to burn off his energy daily. He will need patience from his forever home; he had no self-control behaviors before coming to rescue a year ago, but he has learned a lot and has come a long way. His adopter will need to continue working with him. He will still steal food Foster Location: San Antonio, Texas  Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions. ##1782385##

Story
Socialization/Training: Dodger gets along well with our setters (an older male and female) and would do well in a house with other dogs. He is a bit of an attention hound and quickly approaches when our other dogs are receiving attention and tries to nuzzle his way in. He does seem to take cues from the other two dogs very readily. He is friendly and gentle with other people, children and dogs, but is not particularly interested in approaching other dogs we meet on our walks. He does not ever jump up on people. Dodger knows his name, and “sit”. He seems to really want to be a good boy, so he would do well with additional training. We have no experience with how he does with cats. Crate/House Trained: Dodger doesn’t like the crate and cries when crated. He sleeps through the night on a dog bed next to our bed. Leash Trained: Dodger loves to go for walks, so much so that he will shake and whine with excitement when we are getting ready to head out the door. It’s very cute. He is very enthusiastic on his twice daily walks (1-1.5 miles each) and he does pull, but will often pause if you touch him gently while walking. We expect he will get better as he has already shown a decrease in pulling. He is very interested in birds, bunnies and squirrels while on leash walks, and will pause to point and stalk if he gets near one. Activity level:  Dodger is pretty energetic and likes to run around our yard with our setter. He is also fine with chilling out, as he takes naps periodically throughout the day. Fence: A fenced yard is required for Dodger and ideally he would also love to have a dog door to access the fenced backyard. We have a 5ft fence at our house, and Dodger has never tried to dig under it or jump over it but if the gate is left open, he will escape. He will try to chase critters but if they go outside the fence, he won’t try too hard to get them. No invisible fence for Dodger please. Behavior: Dodger will make a loyal and affectionate companion. He loves his people and prefers to stay near them. He enjoys lying next to us on the couch and is a big snuggler and would be very happy in a home where he can do this regularly. It is very hard to believe he lived his whole life kenneled. He has adjusted remarkably quickly to house life with a dog door and fenced yard. He has 24-hour access to the dog door and yard but spends a lot of time by choice in the house with us and seems perfectly fine with long periods of down time. He really seems happy and comfortable with house life. Dodger loves affection but is also fine being at home with our other dogs and without humans present for hours at a time, and happily and gently greets us when we come back in the door. Medical History: Dodger is neutered, microchipped, up to date on all shots, and on monthly heartworm and flea and tick prevention. He was treated with antibiotics for a parasite and was just cleared in follow-up testing. He had to have many teeth removed, but still has most of his molars and all of his canines (and absolutely no issues with eating!). Dodger’s coat is starting to fill in a bit more, and a bi-weekly bath with conditioner helps his coat to stay soft. Foster comments:  Dodger is a sweet little bean. When he is excited, he sometimes lets out some setter roos and he sometimes roos to greet us when we come into the room or when he is excited to go on a walk. He does not bark very much at all. We have only heard him bark occasionally when he has chased a squirrel up a tree in the backyard or has found a bird nest, so he will be a very good neighbor dog. He sometimes steals our daughter’s socks. We find them in various rooms of the house, unharmed, if a little damp. He is ready to love you and will be a wonderful addition to your family! Foster location: Blacksburg, VA Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Oboe loves all people including men, women, and children. He has met a person using a wheelchair, using crutches, and using a knee scooter and was not phased. He has met and been fine with dogs in the home and dogs on walks. He has met dogs of various sizes. Oboe grew up around cats, and while I don't have any, he was not interested in a cat that approached us on a walk. Oboe is pretty good around the house but does still need some monitoring to make sure he isn't picking up something he shouldn't. He has tried to counter surf a few times but is too short to reach the backs of the counters. Oboe knows "sit," will come when you call his name, and is working on learning "down" and "stay". He is food motivated and learns quickly. Crate trained: Oboe is crated at night and when I leave the house, usually for only a couple hours at a time. He will go in for a treat, but doesn't like it and will bark for a couple of minutes before settling down. Leash trained: Oboe needs some work with leash walking. He doesn't really pull, but sometimes plops down and needs encouragement to keep going. He actually has walked best when there are a lot of people around because he wants to move forward to greet them. He is happy when he sees dogs on walks and wants to meet them.  Activity Level: Oboe is more on the mellow side but is still a puppy. Currently he plays each day with my dogs and goes for a 15 minute walk and that has been enough. He also loves to play with toys and will sometimes fetch. He settles well in the house after exercise. Fence: Oboe needs a fence to stay in the yard, 4ft or higher. He does not try to escape the fence. Behavior: Oboe has the cutest roo and loves attention. He is a happy, playful puppy. He will lean right into you for petting. He will cuddle with you for a nap and is also fine with leaving me to my work while he finds a place to nap. Oboe loves to play with my dogs, but will guard his food from them. He is fed in his crate and that has worked fine. He has no problems with me touching his food bowl while he eats. Medical History: Oboe is up to date on his shots and microchipped. He will need to be neutered in his forever home, so he will be adopted on a puppy contract. He is on monthly heartworm prevention. Oboe has enamel hypoplasia, which is to say the enamel did not develop properly on his teeth. As a result plaque will build up quicker on his teeth and the vet has recommended daily toothbrushing for him. He is due for his next leishmaniasis test on 10/2025. This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Oboe would fit well in most homes. Since he is a puppy, he needs a home that will continue training and socialization. He needs a home with a fence due to his hesitation on leash walking, but will likely learn to love walking with patience and time. I have taken him to a craft show, softball tournaments, and to a friend's house to meet her dog and hang out. He has taken it all in stride, loving the attention of everyone who will stop to pet him. Oboe has an appreciation for soft blankets and will sometimes drag his blankie around the house. He does not enjoy car rides, and will bark in the car during shorter rides. Foster Location: Mount Laurel, NJ Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Melina gets along fine with other dogs and loves to play with other dogs and have no issues all playing together! When we are on our walks and she sees another dog or stranger, she stops dead in her tracks, her tail start to wag and she wants to go meet them. She has not barked at other dogs. She is fine with children, adults and strangers. We are working on keeping four paws on the floor (jumping up) and she is getting the idea and doing better. She has also learned to sit for a treat. Crate trained: I do not trust her yet to leave the house without being crated, she is too inquisitive! Melina will go into her crate with a treat for a nap during the day or if I need to leave the house. At night she goes into her crate between 8:30-9:00 and there’s not a peep all night. She is out around 6:30AM and the crate is clean. She runs right outside and comes in eagerly for breakfast. After breakfast she needs to go back outside as she didn’t spend enough time outside the first time; the thought of breakfast is too exciting. Leash trained: She will come to an immediate halt when she sees a squirrel and may occasionally pull but not anything not manageable. She usually just stares until it goes away or I chase it away so we can move on. Activity Level: As much as Melina loves to run and play in the yard, she will settle down nicely when in the house. She will play with toys or lay down with a Himalayan chew which she loves. She still must be watched because she is still a puppy and will pick up the occasional shoe or start to chew on something sticking out or hanging down. Fence:  We have a 5' chain link fence and Melina has shown no desire to climb over or dig under. She would do best with a physical fence because she loves to be outside running or just relaxing in the sun and napping. Behavior: Melina is a sweet, affectionate girl who will sit in your lap, put her head against your chest and fall asleep. She loves to be around her people and be petted. She loves to be brushed and does well when bathed and having her ears cleaned. She is a happy, healthy, friendly and loving pup. Medical History: Melina had a spot on her left hip area, about the size of a quarter. The vet determined that it is a bacterial scaly patch. She is being bathed with MiconaHex+Triz Shampoo every other day for 3 weeks and has Butenafine Hydrochloide Cream applied daily and the spot is clearing. Melina tested negative for heartworm, lyme and other tick diseases. She is microchipped, up to date on vaccines and on monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention. She has an appointment to be spayed on 11/19 and will be available for transport to her forever home after recovery. Her next leishmaniasis test is due no later than August 2025. This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Melina and her sister, Esther, were found as strays, just the two of them, on the island of Evia. They have never experienced living in a home so there is so much that is new to them and behaviors to learn. Melina enjoys being in the house with us, playing with toys and bones. She's content to come for some petting or just lay down and sometimes her head pops up and she looks at the tv with such a confused look. As much as she loves being outside, running and playing, she can also settle down when indoors. I always keep her where I can see her so she doesn’t get into any trouble but she seldom does. I still take her out to potty because she doesn’t go to the door on her own but she seems to start walking around/get restless so I watch for that. She will make a wonderful friend and with her personality, I feel that she would make a good therapy dog! Foster location: Harrisburg, PA Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Flute is trusting and seems to be comfortable with everyone. We have not had the opportunity to have her around young children but I anticipate she would do just fine with them. We have a resident setter and 2 resident cats. She is curious about the cats and tries to play with them. She is being fostered with her littermate, Trumpet, and they play together a lot. She will thrive in a home where there is a lot of opportunity to play. Flute is still figuring out what it means to live in a house but is adapting very quickly. She is a chewer, as she's still a puppy! If she grabs an inappropriate item (like a shoe), she redirects easily when we give her a toy to play with or bone to chew on.  Crate trained: Yes - Flute readily goes into the crate. She is crated for a 2-3 hours at a time during the day when I am working. She is also crated at night when we are asleep. She may whine/bark for a few minutes, but settles quickly. I would not leave her unattended now due to her love of chewing (she is prime teething age)! Leash trained: Flute does pretty well on a leash - she does pull sometimes, but I think she would respond well to a gentle leader. If we meet other people/dogs, she sits nicely for pets. Activity Level: Flute is an active 7-month-old puppy! She will get the zoomies in the backyard with her brother and they will play hard for a bit, then settle down independently to chew on something - she is a big fan of chewing on the wood chips in the backyard. They go through periods of playfulness inside the house too, but are typical setters, and settle down and want to cuddle. Flute will cuddle for a few minutes and then lay down on a nearby dog bed to sleep. Fence: We currently have a 5-foot fence, which is adequate. We are uncertain about her recall. Behavior: Flute vacillates between playing and sleeping. She is very affectionate and playful. She is still learning about the world but her confidence is improving each day. Medical History: Flute had giardia when we received her but she was treated and is doing well. She has no known health issues. She is microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. She is not yet spayed, so she will be adopted on a puppy contract and her adopter will have to get her spayed when she is old enough. Her next leishmaniasis test is due August 2025. Foster Comments: Flute is a jolly, confident, playful young setter that is always happy to see you and will crawl right up into your lap to greet you. Once she has had her fix of love, she plays independently and is happy to do her own thing. I think she will thrive in any setting - we are in the city and she does well on walks and loves to meet strangers. When we have taken her to dog parks, she likes to stay close and check in frequently, but also tries to “adopt” other humans there - she is quite bewitching that way!  Foster location: Minneapolis, MN Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home.
