Piper has grown leaps and bounds since she has been exposed to the world! She came to me afraid of everything. Now instead of barking at people we encounter outside - she sits (almost) on the ground and swishes her tail back and forth very fast hoping they will come and greet her! She is good on leash but still needs brought to heel. She tends to walk quickly when first out the door, but settles down after completing her business. She can be resource guarding of food and occasionally will let you know she does not want to be picked up or moved or even snuggled too tightly. Basically, give her a bit of distance at times as we need ourselves. Piper is still not sure of other dogs but has ventured to a few to say a quick, calm hello. She should not be placed with cats or any other small animals. She would probably do best as an only dog or might tolerate a male close to her size and breed. Piper is house and crate trained. She loves attention but is not a Velcro dog. She is an excellent dog and the perfect example of how encouragement, understanding, acceptance and love can change a scared, insecure animal into a loving happy dog. Piper is located in Naples. Carlie Piglet aka the Carlie Bug Is looking for her forever home. She’s a 2 year old, 3/4 English Bulldog and 1/4 Beagle. Does that make her a Bugle?! Carlie is SO sweet but HIGH energy and while she knows basic commands, she needs formal training. She’s very strong and can knock people over when she jumps on them. Not ideal for small children. She’d love to be in a house with another high energy dog or a very active person. 4 mile walk is not a problem on a cool day. Dog parks are her jam. She is obsessed with going to little league baseball games. She watches the ball the entire time. She’s an inside dog. Just like most Bulldogs, she has allergies. She came from a rescue and we have had her for just over a year. Unfortunately, my husband hates her and Carlie has now picked up on this. I can get training for Carlie but I can’t change my husband’s attitude. She is crate trained but does not need to be locked up more than a 2-3 hours during the day. 8 hours at night is fine.

Some of our most heartfelt moments here at Satchel's is watching our animals come out of their shells to reveal their wonderful and different personalities. One of our most notable pups would be Miss Sicily. When she first arrived, Sicily kept her guard up, she was nervous and untrusting. She would let a select few staff members engage with her, but did not show affection and was more relieved when the interaction was over. Fast forward a few weeks, and we could see a small spark starting to show through, she was more willing to take treats from us and was more curious about going outside. She then found a lovely Woof Pack leader, Peg, who was willing to work with her on socializing and getting her to open up more. Soon she started jumping up on us when we went to clean her kennel, started giving us kisses and loved being rubbed all over. She started showing her silly side, playing with toys and goofing around. She was still nervous outside the kennel, and she still has moments when she is unsure about the environment, but her confidence has significantly grown since the day she first arrived. Sicily can still be a bit weary of men and tends to gravitate towards females, but we are so proud of the steps she has conquered and continues to, even today. She has shown us that the shyest of pups have a love for play and affection and sometimes it just takes patience and understanding to let their light shine through. Today, Sicily loves to go out with Peg in our back yard and run around, getting all her zoomies out and acting like a goofball. She loves to give hugs and kisses, getting belly rubs when she rolls over and just generally loves attention. This happy girl lives up to her name, a sassy personality indeed. Sassafras is an adult beauty, with a brilliant smile that brightens anyone's day. She is the life of the party and loves to be the center of attention. She can not wait to go outside and either go in the yards and sniff everything possible, or go on a brisk walk, leading the way. Sassy is protective of her space and loyal to her friends but will welcome new people into her circle with a slow introduction. She doesn't seem to mind the company of some canines, but we have found her to be selective and she would prefer to have the people all to herself. She adores toys and goes for the stuffed squeaky toys every time. She will chase balls to the point of exhaustion but her favorite past time is water play. When given the opportunity, she loves splashing in a wading pool, chasing the spray of a hose and swimming in the bay. She is very treat motivated, which is helpful in her learning of basic obedience. Curling up in a comfy bed or cuddled up with a friend is the best way to end her day.
