Story
Meet Ziga, the neutered male Australian Shepherd. Ziga came to the Shelter as a stray so we do not know much about his life before the Shelter. Staff describe him as a handsome yet mischievous neutered male. He loves to be outdoors and happily engage with people. He has met a variety of dogs at the Shelter and has quickly initiated play. He will sometimes engage in herding breed behaviors (not a total shocker since he is well, a herding breed) so breed savvy adopters are recommended. Bonded with his guardian through force free/R+ paired with appropriate mental and physical stimulation will help set Ziga up for success. Patience as Ziga learns life skills and manners (house training, leash walking, etc) will be needed by his new guardians. If you are looking for an active pup to join you on life’s adventures – come meet Ziga today! Now through February 15th, we are hosting “Adopt Your Valentine” where adoption fees are reduced to $50. The adoption fee includes all age appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchips. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Fern, the aussie! Fern came to the Shelter as a stray with her “friend” Frisbee (a male terrier mix). Staff have observed that she is quiet in the kennel but is perking up with daily interactions with staff and other dogs. Fern is still perfecting life skills and manners such as leash walking and house training. Adopters should be patient in the transition and use force free / +R training to bond with her and help her learn. Staff have commented how sweet Fern is and noted that she enjoys playing fetch with a tennis ball. We do not have any history of Fern with children or cats. Story
Introducing Phantom! This sweet pup came into our care with his two siblings as a result of an accidental breeding. Phantom was born completely blind, but this doesn't slow him down! He is quite the gentle pup and uses those little ears of his to lead the way and he's adapted great to this new style of life. His foster let us know that Phantom has a knack for finding his way into your heart, as he'll happily sit or lay by, or even on your feet, offering a sense of comfort and warmth. His funny and playful nature will keep you entertained, and he's always up for a game of follow-the-leader, either by lead or scent. This water-loving pup is a true "water puppy," loving the joy of swimming and playing in the river. Blindness doesn't slow Phantom down; in fact, it adds to his charm and resilience. He navigates the world with grace and enthusiasm, proving that love knows no boundaries. His playful demeanor extends to other dogs, and he's known to be good with cats but would prefer a home with an experienced adult owner or a family with older children who have previously worked with special needs dogs (preferably blind dogs). His future owner would be someone who is home throughout the day with him, able to continue positive training and socialization for his safety. Pre-registration for general obedience classes is a requirement for adoption. Phantom is currently in foster care. Meet and greets can be arranged once your online application has been approved. Story
Looks like: Australian Shepherd mix Male, 2 years old (estimated), 71 pounds Smiley Koda is a large bundle of energy and love! He is a young gentleman with a heart of gold, interested in long walks (or runs!), and is looking for his forever adventure buddy! Koda does sit on command and but could benefit from a loving, patient, and firm guardian to teach him other basic commands and how to politely walk on leash. He gets along with other dogs but does tend to bark at dogs to let them know he wants to play when he is out on walks. This handsome boy would be a perfect fit for someone who is looking for a young energetic dog who enjoys exercise and lots of affectionate pets and love! Koda would not be a good fit in a home that has cats or children. Koda came to us after his senior guardian passed away.
