Story
Big, beautiful, talkative, and just a little bit of a glorious good time, this is Charlie. With his shepherd-malamute looks, oversized puppy energy, and sweet nature, Charlie is the kind of dog who turns heads on walks and then wins hearts once you get to know him. At just around a year old, he is still very much in that young-dog chapter of life where the body is huge, the enthusiasm is even bigger, and the manners are loading. The good news is that underneath all that bounce is a genuinely lovely dog who is already learning how wonderful home life can be.
Head over to YouTube to watch Charlie in action, then come right back to meet the big-hearted boy who brings the bark, the bounce, and is in the running for best-house-dog.
Charlie is estimated to be about 1 year old and weighs 78 lbs. He appears to be a shepherd-malamute type mix, though as always with rescue, breed and birthday are our best guess.

Charlie is fostered in a loving home where he is enjoying daily walks, playtime with the resident dog, and learning the rhythm of being a well-loved companion. That home setting has really helped show who he is - a sweet, playful, goofy young dog who wants connection, activity, and a family to belong to. Inside the home, he settles in nicely and is clearly figuring out that being a beloved house dog is a pretty wonderful gig.
One of Charlie’s standout qualities is that he is a social, playful dog who truly enjoys other dogs. He loves having a canine buddy to romp around with and would likely be happiest with a medium-energy dog who enjoys some play and can match his enthusiasm. He can be a bit insistent when he gets excited and is eager to play. His bark and play bow combo happens quickly when meeting new dogs but his intentions are playful, friendly, and welcoming. He is the kind of dog who says, “best friend?” with his whole body.
Charlie is also a sweet boy with people, especially once he is indoors and he has had his walk or play session. A large couch will be a necessity because of his size but the snuggles are worth it! Charlie is ready for movie nights, especially if snacks are included. He takes treats very gently, and has shown that he can share affection and space near another dog without issue. He does not come in with immediate velcro-dog energy, but there is a softness to him that shows up more and more with connection. He also has plenty to say and is not shy about using his voice, which only adds to his big-personality charm.
His biggest work-in-progress right now is leash walking. Charlie is a strong dog and he will absolutely need a confident handler who is prepared to continue working on his leash manners. This is not a grab-the-leash-and-go kind of dog just yet. He is smart, capable of learning, and does respond to guidance, but he is a large young dog with a lot of excitement and strength, so ongoing training will be important. With structure, consistency, and practice, its easy to picture him as an excellent adventure buddy for hikes, outings, and active days with his people.
Because of his size and excitement level, Charlie would do best with older kids who will not be easily knocked over by his enthusiastic greetings and “high-fives.” He can jump up when excited and is still learning body awareness, so a home ready to help him polish those manners will be the best fit.
Charlie’s ideal home is one with a semi-active lifestyle, a confident adopter, and room for him to keep learning. Bonus points if his future family knows and loves shepherd-type dogs and understands that big, intelligent, exuberant dogs often come with a little extra training homework. And a yard! A yard for this handsome boy, giving him space to run, play, and burn off some of that cheerful young-dog energy.
Charlie is so worth it. He is goofy, sweet, playful, full of promise, and already showing all the signs of becoming a truly amazing companion.
If you are looking for a big, strikingly handsome dog with a playful spirit, a lot of love to give, and the potential to be your favorite sidekick, Charlie is your guy. Apply today or reach out to his adoption coordinator if you have any questions.
