Story
Meet Kenai! A devoted three-year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Siberian Husky mix from Lake Forest, CA, whose icy blue eyes are as striking as his heart is loyal. At 40 pounds, Kenai is a medium-sized bundle of affection and charm, ready to be your constant companion. His tricolor coat is as vibrant as his personality, and his favorite spot is snuggled right between his people—preferably with a heated blanket for good measure. If you're looking for a partner in coziness, Kenai’s got you covered! Kenai thrives on quality time. Whether it’s cruising in the car, chewing on a bully stick, or simply being included in your daily tasks, he’s happiest when he’s by your side. He’s a quick learner and knows commands like sit, lay down, stay, and crate, thanks to his formal obedience training. In fact, he’s crate-trained and feels right at home there when left alone for short periods. Kenai is a sweet, loyal boy with his trusted people, but he needs a home where he can be the only pet. He can be reactive to strangers and other animals and has bitten out of fear in the past. Because of this, Kenai will need an experienced guardian who understands reactive dogs and can provide him with the guidance and structure he needs to feel safe. He’s not suited for a home with children or other pets but does well when he has his own space to thrive. Despite these challenges, Kenai is incredibly affectionate and playful with his trusted circle. He’s a constant companion who will stay by your side for every adventure, head scratch, or cozy night in. A securely fenced yard is preferred, and a guardian willing to invest in his continued training and comfort will help Kenai blossom into the incredible companion he’s meant to be! If you’re a skilled dog lover who understands reactive dogs, Kenai is ready to reward your care with unwavering loyalty and endless love. Could you be the calm, steady home Kenai needs? To make sure that Kenai has a great start with his new family, we have a canine behaviorist available for a free consultation. Reach out to adopt@joyfulpets.com to learn more about Kenai and take the first step toward a lifelong friendship! Is your home ready for a one-of-a-kind dog like Kenai?

Story
Meet Puppy! A spirited three-year-old Australian Cattle Dog and Shepherd mix from San Diego, CA, whose energy and heart are as big as her dreams of finding a forever family. With her fawn brindle coat adorned with white accents and spotted paws that seem to dance when she's excited, Puppy is the definition of a fun-loving, goofy companion who is always ready to brighten up your day! This incredible girl has come a long way from her early days and has blossomed into a bundle of love and joy. She's earned a "Basic Obedience" certificate and knows commands like "Place," "Heel," and "Sit" like a pro, proving just how smart and trainable she is. Puppy thrives on learning new tricks, and her eagerness to please makes her a joy to train and bond with. Her playful spirit is infectious, and she loves being around people—she’s as friendly with strangers as she is with her trusted humans! Puppy gets along well with her current dog and cat friends, showing that she's got a lovely side that loves company and companionship. With a special bond with children, she’s become fast friends with a toddler in her current family. However, her high energy and a few quirks make her best suited to a home with older children who understand her need for personal space, especially around food. True to her mix of breeds, Puppy has that classic, joyful stubbornness that’s common in Australian Cattle Dogs. Her goofy antics and steadfast loyalty will keep you smiling, but she’s also got a strong personality that needs a confident, understanding caregiver. Puppy does face challenges with resource-guarding, especially around food, and may snap if she feels her food is at risk. She’s an incredibly loving dog with much to give, but she thrives with a family who can provide the training and understanding to help her manage these tendencies positively. Her ideal family would also provide an active lifestyle with lots of exercise, a fenced yard, and a commitment to help her grow in confidence and trust. Are you ready to add a unique, lovable companion to your life? Puppy’s waiting with a wagging tail and all the cuddles you could ever hope for! Email adopt@joyfulpets.com to learn more about making her a cherished member of your family. Could you be the one to give her the loving, energetic home she’s been searching for?

Story
Meet Charlie! A spirited Australian Cattle Dog, Boxer, and American Pitbull Terrier mix from Fairfield, CA, whose zest for life is as boundless as his love for people. At three-and-a-half-years-old, this tan-coated, white-accented bundle of energy is a happy, loyal, and highly intelligent companion who’s always eager to make his family smile! His playful personality, combined with his quick learning skills, makes him not only fun to be around but also a joy to train. He already knows commands like "sit," "stay," "leave it," "no," "yes," "lay down," and even "out of the kitchen"—though, to be fair, he sometimes pretends not to hear that last one when something tasty is left unattended! Charlie is a social butterfly who adores people, especially kids, and gets along well with other dogs and even cats. Whether he’s romping around with canine pals or cuddling up for some well-earned affection, he thrives on companionship. He would love a home with a fenced yard where he can safely stretch his legs, but he’s also happy to settle down in his crate when needed. Walks and hikes are among his favorite activities, and he’ll eagerly join you for an outdoor adventure, always ready to explore the world with his tail wagging! Though Charlie is mostly well-mannered, he has a mischievous streak—he’s been known to help himself to an unsupervised snack from the counter if given the chance! His future family will need to keep an eye on their food, but his enthusiasm for learning means he’s more than capable of picking up good habits with positive reinforcement. With his medium energy level, he’s the perfect mix of playful and relaxed, making him a fantastic match for an active yet loving household. Charlie is neutered, microchipped, house-trained, and up to date on vaccinations. He’s looking for a stable, kind family who understands the joys (and occasional silliness) of having a smart, affectionate pup in their lives. Could Charlie be the perfect new addition to your family? Reach out to adopt@joyfulpets.com and find out!

Story
Meet Scooby! A lively one-and-a-half-year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Belgian Malinois/Whippet mix from Tustin, CA, whose boundless energy and affectionate nature make him an incredible companion for the right home. Wrapped in a sleek black-and-tan coat, this playful pup is most comfortable and playful in familiar environments. While he loves to explore and have fun, he can be cautious in new situations and needs a little time to warm up before fully diving into the adventure. Once he feels secure, though, he’s ready to match the energy of his canine friends at the dog park, big or small. He could run for an hour (or more!) and still come home eager for more playtime. Scooby is a smart boy who already knows commands like sit, down, stay, and go to your mat, but he thrives in a calm and consistent environment where he can continue learning at his own pace. While he’s eager to bond, he tends to be hesitant around new people at first. However, once he trusts you, you’ll have a loyal, affectionate companion who loves to cuddle! He’s done great with older kids (ages 10-17) and has been gentle with an elderly family member. This high-energy pup does well with other dogs and enjoys their company, but he can be possessive over high-value treats like bones. Mealtime has been peaceful in his current home as long as food bowls are kept separate. When it comes to cats, though, Scooby doesn’t quite understand that they don’t want to play like dogs do, so a cat-free home would be best. He’s also shown a strong prey drive toward smaller animals like birds and rabbits, making a home without small pets the ideal fit. Scooby is crate trained and sees it as his safe space, especially when new guests arrive. He’s mostly house-trained, though he may have occasional small accidents when overly excited or nervous. He has a sensitive stomach and benefits from probiotics and antacids, as certain foods (especially dairy) don’t sit well with him. If you have a quiet home, patience, and plenty of space for an energetic dog to run and play, Scooby could be the perfect match for you! Story
Meet Willow! Looking for the perfect mix of adventure buddy and cuddle companion? Meet Willow, a five-and-a-half-year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Siberian Husky mix from Portland, OR. With her sleek black coat, striking white accents, and soulful eyes, this 55-pound sweetheart is equal parts athletic and affectionate. Willow’s perfect day is a blend of outdoor fun and cozy relaxation. She loves hiking, running, swimming, and playing catch, but by evening, she’s all about snuggling on the couch. She’s content with two brisk 30-minute walks a day but would happily join an active owner on longer outings. Smart, polite, and eager to please, Willow is crate-trained, house-trained, and knows her basic commands—plus fun tricks like “roll over”! She’s food-motivated and learns quickly, making training a rewarding experience. Unlike some pups, she won’t beg at the table or counter surf—what a well-mannered girl! When it comes to socializing, Willow is friendly with strangers and enjoys playdates with most dogs, but she does best in structured settings like pack walks or one-on-one meetups with compatible pups. Dog parks aren’t her scene, and she can be leash-reactive, but a confident handler helps her stay focused on walks. Because Willow can be a high-energy jumper, she’ll need a secure, fenced yard to explore safely. She’ll thrive in a child-free home where she can soak up all the love. No cats for this girl, but she’ll bring endless devotion to the right family. Could Willow be your perfect match? If you’re looking for a loyal, fun-loving companion who’s ready for adventure and downtime, Willow is waiting to meet you! Contact adopt@joyfulpets.com to start your journey with this incredible girl!

Story
Meet Macks, a 5-year-old Cattle Dog/Shepherd mix with a heart full of potential and a loving spirit. Macks was surrendered to a high-kill shelter after her previous owner passed away, and she’s now looking for a new family to give her the love and stability she deserves. Initially anxious and a bit flighty, Macks requires some time to build trust. However, once she feels secure, she becomes an incredibly affectionate and well-behaved companion. Macks is not fond of other dogs or cats, so she would do best in a home where she can be the only pet. She will thrive in a household with middle school-aged children or older, or with adults who can provide her with the patience and care she needs to feel at ease. If you're looking for a loyal and loving dog who will become deeply attached to her new family, Macks is ready to bring her devotion and warmth into your home.

Story
ASHER THE CATTLE DOG WANTS TO BE YOUR ONE AND ONLY. Looking for a devoted companion with smarts, sweetness, and a whole lot of personality? Meet Asher, a two-year-old cattle dog who's ready to be your best friend, cuddle buddy, and fetch partner all rolled into one! Asher is a snuggle pro who loves burying his head in your arms during the day and curling up close at night. Whether you’re working, relaxing, or tossing a ball, he’s right there by your side, always eager to please. Asher’s Journey: This resilient boy came to the East Valley Shelter as a stray with a neck wound, likely from a past scuffle with another dog. Thankfully, he’s fully healed and now dreams of finding his *FURever* home with a loving, experienced cattle dog owner. What Asher Needs: Cattle dogs like Asher are incredibly loyal and thrive in homes where they can bond deeply with their people. Asher would do best as the only animal in a home without children, where he can shine as your one-and-only companion. He’s happiest with a yard where he can channel his natural instincts to “work” and explore. Apartment life isn’t the right fit for Asher, as he’s uncomfortable around other dogs and might find frequent leash walks in a busy neighborhood stressful. A home with even a small yard will give him the space and structure he needs to succeed, as recommended by the certified professional dog trainer working with him. Why You’ll Love Asher: This “working dog” thrives on activity and purpose. He’s energetic and passionate about his toys, but he also finds simple joy in being by your side. Whether you’re throwing the ball for an epic game of fetch or just hanging out, Asher’s loyalty and love will make every moment brighter. If you’re ready to give Asher the structured, loving home he needs, he’s ready to reward you with endless devotion and fun. Story
Milo is in good health, gets regular vet wellness checkups, is current on all vaccinations, microchipped, neutered, treated for ticks and fleas, and licensed in Los Angeles County. Milo is a well-behaved dog, fully housebroken, and knows where he's allowed and where not to go. He is a very obedient dog, trained to follow numerous hand and vocal commands. Milo is full of energy and joy. He loves people and wants to be a part of the family, especially joining group hugs. He could get excited meeting new people but calms down with a treat. He's brilliant, curious, and loves playing with his toys and learning new tricks. He seems eager to play with other dogs. Milo would greatly benefit being in a home with an active family or person that enjoy the outdoors and activities such as hiking and long walks. True to his breeds-he is highly intelligent and enjoys alot of stimulation and would be an incredibly active member of a family that enjoys and appreciates all that a breed like Milo’s has to offer. Milo was adopted from a shelter in Downtown Los Angeles when he was 3 months old and lived with one family of 2 teenage boys his entire life. He is an indoor pet but must have free access to an outdoor space during the day. Regular feeding and walks, morning and evening, are a part of his routine. He loves park outings. Please call (310) 990-7813 for more information/application and or to schedule a meet and greet.

Adopting a Australian Cattle Dog

Frequently asked questions about acquiring an Australian Cattle Dog - the pros and cons of adopting versus going through a breeder, and associated costs.

The cost to adopt an Australian Cattle Dog puppy is around $300, which helps the rescue or shelter cover the expenses of caring for the dog before adoption. In contrast, buying Australian Cattle Dogs from breeders can be prohibitively expensive. Depending on their breeding, they usually cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500, and show-quality or champion bloodline puppies can be priced higher.

The easiest way to adopt an Australian Cattle Dog is through a rescue that specializes in the breed. A great avenue to begin looking is starting a breed search on Adopt a Pet. The search will show you all the available Australian Cattle Dogs in your area.

Australian Cattle Dog fun facts

Fun Facts:

Australian Cattle Dogs are sometimes still referred to as Blue Heelers or Queensland Heelers.

By the end of World War II, the breed was nearly decimated in its native Belgium, but luckily dedicated dog-lovers revitalized the breed.

In French, "griffon" means "wire-haired," which is an indication of what this breed's coat looks like.
