Come meet adoptable dogs every Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM - 4 PM at our Adoption Center located at 11116 Fairfax Station Rd. Fairfax Station, VA 22039. We can also schedule time to meet a specific dog at the Adoption Center during the week by appointment - just fill out the application and we will follow up with you! For animals in foster homes, please submit an online application and a member of our Adoptions team will reply with next steps. As a working farm dog, when she did not perform to her owner's satisfaction he cut off her front paws, dragged her behind a car and hit and kicked her. How she lived we do not know. But thankfully, an Iranian loving person rescued her and through a lot of hard work, Sudi left Iran for Canada and then made her way to us here at Homeward Trails. She recently was fitted for prosthetic feet and is doing remarkably well in them, getting a new lease on life that allows her to be more mobile. While we thought she may need hip surgery to replace her hip socket, we are currently waiting on that per her veterinarian orthopedist's suggestion to have a specialist determine if it is workable. For now, she remains on pain meds and steroids to address the issue, which may end up being her long-term solution. Sudi needs an adoptive family. She is great with all people but does not like other animals enough to live with them. It may be her low-level pain or fear but we have tried and we now know she wishes to be an only animal. This girl is a truly remarkable example of endurance and spirit. That she even trusts humans at all after what has been done to her is truly, truly inspiring. She will do best in a home with few stairs - or least a home where she can get inside/outside without many. She would love a yard where she can lounge in the sun. Whatever orthopedic issues come her way in the near future in terms of surgery will be covered by Homeward Trails. This boy was returned due to owners downsizing. He is a sweet boy who is doing well in a foster home. He is housetrained with a dog door and gets along with cats. He doesn't mind other dogs and is very adjustable to new routines. He does know some commands and is treat motivated. He learns very quickly and would do well in any type home. He loves to play and was in a house. We also use the most animal-friendly transport on the road. Rescue Riders Pet Transport. They transport every weekend alternating between the Northeast and the Midwest.

This gal and her siblings were found in the woods. They are a sweet group of pups who will grow into wonderful dogs. Being part Anatolian Shepherd (we think) means they need some room to roam. They are typically laid back with wonderful personalities that get along with just about anything. They just need something to do. So lots of activity, walks and/or a farm. We just want these babies to find a great home with families who will love them and take care of their needs. Indy is a friendly girl who likes everybody! She is always happy to see people, likes to play with the other puppies. She will need all the training that puppies need but will learn fast. Routines help a lot. Abigail has some fuzzy hair with a beautiful fluffy tail that curls over her back when she’s playful. She is house trained and crate trained. She has no interest in cats and is particularly fearful of farm animals. She has not been around farm animals while growing up. In the process of testing her with all the animals, the donkey was the scariest and the noise the pigs made were frightful. After a half an hour walking among the farm animals she became much more curious and about them and calm…even with the donkey. She was a little leery of my sister and me but it only took her a few minutes to say hello. After that, all of us were able to pet her and give her treats. Her temperament is calm, sweet, and adaptable. Abigail has an allergy to Chicken so she is kept on a Blue Buffalo Lamb kibble. She also needs to go outside every 6-7 hours to do her business. This dog is CURRENTLY IN TEXAS and available for pre-adoption. Adoptions include neuter/spay, vaccinations (DHPP, Bordetella, Rabies), microchip, health certificate, transport with our professional dog transporter, and 6 mos of heart worm prevention. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Fill out an Adoption Application Since coming to MTM, Rajah has been adopted twice, and returned within a month each time. Why? She’s a big, strong, and playful girl, who came into rescue because her owner died, and her owner’s next of kin kept her outside for 2 years before surrendering her to rescue in January 2021. In those 2 years, she had minimal training and human interaction, and she became infected with heartworm. MTM provided heartworm treatment and she is now negative. Rajah’s previous adopters expected too much, too soon. The first adopters allowed their cat in immediate proximity within the first hour, and Rajah chased. Days later, it wasn’t any better. The second adopter had no other pets, and no children at home. Rajah was adjusting well to the routine and the long walks and all the attention. But, when an adult child and dog visited, Rajah got protective, so she was returned. Her perfect home would have a confident and patient owner, no children, no other animals, and a yard that is fenced in with a physical fence.  Rajah could potentially have a K9 brother or sister as long as his/her demeanor was calm and not overly exuberant or aggressive and they were introduced properly, with decompression techniques used. Rajah needs time and consistency to learn her people are trustworthy. She doesn’t have good social skills with dogs. She chases cats and other small animals. She has been with the same fosterer since April 2021. Her fosterer has other dogs, and goats. Rajah is kept separated from the other animals, and her fosterer feels Rajah doesn’t get enough time with her. Her fosterer describes Rajah as a loving, bouncy Great Dane, a "picture-perfect dog that is just beyond beautiful. Her soul and spirit are truly a rare blessing." She deserves a home where she can enjoy her own space and her own people. Rajah knows basic obedience, just needs to be reminded. She pulls at times but also knows how to walk at a heel position. She loves her zoomies but then will get excited and will jump up to face greet. Putting her in a sit and giving a calm chest rub will calm her back down. Rajah is located in Knoxville, MD. She rides great in the car. She has no issues with people approaching, but she will bark at other dogs. Going to the vet hasn’t been an issue. Grooming; she is fine with nails trims, brushing, etc. She is fine by herself, so she can be left alone while someone works. Likes: Rajah loves having her face petted and leaning in for a Dane hug. She is so attentive and eager to please. She does well in a crate, but she will sing to you if she needs a potty break, a hug or attention. Dislikes: Strangers, dogs barking at her, unpredictable people or activity Personality: Rajah is playful and loving. Her facial expression is so soft. She just wants to get and give love. Energy level: Rajah is able to be calm in a crate, but when loose she is high energy. She loves her zoomies so would do best in a fenced yard. She runs the fence barking at the goats, and the other dogs. Favorite activities: Zoomies and hugs. Good with: Calm, confident and predictable adult humans, and positive training. She likes to please. Not good with: Energetic or loud dogs or cats. She is insecure, so is not trustworthy with children. Housetrained: Yes. Crate trained: Yes. Challenges: Rajah will need to have her obedience training refreshed. She is calmest in a home with a confident owner or she will take control. She does not have good dog-to-dog social skills and she chases cats, so would do best in a home with no other pets. She has done well with calm K9's, so that is a possibility and can be explored in discussion with her current foster. Any Medical issues? Rajah is now heartworm negative! Rajah would thrive in an experienced Great Dane home that understands the importance of ongoing training to build Rajah's confidence. Being an only dog would give her the attention and the time she wants and needs to become a happy-go-lucky Dane. A fenced yard would give her the thrill of the zoomies that she so loves. Rajah may be seven years old, but she isn’t ready to slow down. A typical Dane, she will enjoy going for a walk just as much as a nap. Meeting this girl will bring a joy to your life that only a Great Dane can bring.   Application Fees, Adoption Donations and Rescue Policy: Please know that 100% of our fees and donations pay for the costs of rescuing dogs. These include, but are not limited to: pull fees from shelters, veterinary examinations, vaccinations, medications and care, microchips, neuter/spay surgeries, heartworm treatments, behavior evaluations, and foster care, as needed. Our rescue policy requires the following: Adopters must have their primary residence in one of the following states: Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and parts of North Carolina. Any inside steps to which the dog(s) have access, must have carpeting, securely fixed stair treads, or a non-skid surface. Methods or devices using pain or force on the dog to control the dog, or to deter undesirable behavior is prohibited. Applications for giant breed dogs must be submitted by the property owner. Homes with children under 6 years of age will not be approved for adoption. Homes with children should have a fenced yard. Pets currently in the applicant's home must have a history of appropriate veterinary care. Veterinary records will be checked. All references must be checked before any visitation of the dog is permitted at the foster home. All family members must be present during the home visit to the applicant's home. She's about 4 years old and this big, beautiful Boerboel arrived in July, 2023 after having a couple of unfit homes. Spice needed some time to put all of that behind her, and she needed help in learning how to trust again. She's a resilient girl though, and she does her best not to let things get her down. Unfortunately, it does get her down, being here for so long. When Spice comes out of the kennel with friends, she's a big, bubbly goofball! She bonds intently with her friends and, as mastiffs are, she's protective of those she's bonded with. It takes her a minute or two to get to know and trust you but once she does, she just about knocks you over with leaning against you to get all of your attention. Spice is well-behaved and has learned lots! She knows sit, stay, down, paw, and so much more. She's good on a leash and loves toys too! Spice has had lousy experiences with pets in the past so it's best if she goes to a home where she can be an only pet. That just means she'll love YOU all the more though. Fill out an Adoption Application **Courtesy post located in Bel Air, MD** AleXander the Great is a wonderful boy in search of a family to call his own... a family that can show him time, love, and the attention he deserves.   HISTORY: Xander, to no fault of his own, has had to jump around a bit due to his family's financial difficulties.  When times were good he lived with his human mom, two other great danes and a chocolate lab with plenty of room to run around.  His best friend was his 7-year-old human brother.  He also spent some time with a Rover Pet-Sitter but ultimately funds ran out and is currently living in the basement of the home where he isn’t allowed upstairs. He does have the run of the yard where he does his zoomies though.                                  PERSONALITY: Xander is extremely lovable and gentle even if he forgets his size sometimes. He rarely barks except when frightened or when people/dogs pass by when he’s in the yard. Xander is smart but lacks some discipline. He needs training to be a good walker. He pulls at first but quickly settles down. Will try to dart after rabbits and squirrels. Knows to sit for food and gives his paw. Not good at coming when called except in a confined area, like our yard. He is good with children and most people. Doesn’t trust men in hats or beards. Developed a tendency to growl at strange dogs after returning from the Rover Pet Sitting. Xander has a good-natured personality and loves being cuddled, and hugged and returns the same. He has a stubborn streak when he needs to be locked in and will occasionally try to run if he isn’t tempted with a treat.  FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: WALKING and exploring. Car rides. When going for a ride he will be the first one in the vehicle. He is very good in a car. Coordination isn’t his thing and he’s no retriever. He does like to play catch me if you can with a ball, toy, or stick. Snuggling and just chilling with people. His most UN-favorite thing is being alone. He whines and whimpers. Not excessively. Again – rarely barks.  MEDICAL ISSUES: None. He was neutered a month ago and has healed well. He is up to date on all his shots and was tested for heartworm when he was neutered which was negative. All medical records will be provided. WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST KIND OF HOME: A home that can provide him with the attention he deserves. He craves affection and returns the same. He needs to be walked and have room to move around. Ideally, he needs to be included and surrounded by family members.
