Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. When you are eating at a restaurant do you like when strangers stop to take food off your plate? How about when family members do it? Still no? Well, then you will likely understand Zira. Zira is an 11 month old Pyr/Anatolian mix pulled with her sister in a TX shelter when she was about 5 months old. Zira was adopted by a couple who then returned her as they didn’t know how to help her when she was communicating. Zira is a super sweet and silly girl who will give you hours of entertainment. Her whole body wiggles and wags when she sees people and anticipates getting loves, boop kisses, then she will flop over on her side for belly rubs. When she doesn’t have a care in the world, she’s out doing zoomies, chasing around her toys that she can throw herself, or playing with her foster siblings. She is very smart, learns quickly and is very food motivated which helps with training. She is an adventurer, loves to play with other dogs, loves to DIG (and is very good at it so you must love her more than your yard) and quietly sleeps through the night. She is fine with cats. She is crate trained, walks well on a leash and is fully potty trainied. Zira is a great communicator and growls when she is uncomfortable, that in turn may make some people uncomfortable. She may not like every dog she encounters immediately and others she will. She would benefit from a calm and confident human who can help her feel safe under such conditions. Her current foster has two other fosters, Zira loved the female immediately and growled at the male for 4 days. With a lot of reassurance (and treats), Zira started to look at her foster brother with curiosity and playfulness. Now they can play nicely together in the yard! Zira is at the age where she’s really considering her guarding trait, what she was genetically meant to do. She needs to decide who is friend or foe and not everyone will be a friend…at least right away and maybe she may find a dog she doesn’t like at all. Just like us people, we don’t always like everyone we meet. Her first line of defense it to make it known she’s uncomfortable (growling maybe showing teeth) and then evaluating from afar. She has likely OUTGROWN dog parks with her maturing as it takes her time to evaluate a “threat” (4 days for her foster brother). She would love to have a friendly and loving sibling who she can count on through thick and thin. Even so, she will likely never want to share her meals or her bones but may be able to be encouraged to share her toys. With learning her guardian role, Zira does a great job barking at threats or when her foster siblings are barking. She has a beautiful full and rich alto bark that should deter any stranger. She is not a trained working dog but loves to be outside. She is unaware of her size so large and sturdy children are best as she doesn’t have a “pyr paw” she has a “pyr PUNCH!” Zira is being fostered in Tacoma, WA and can be transported within OR-WA.
