Hi, I'm Baxter! I'm just a little over 2 years old. I'm friendly with other dogs and I'm fine on walks to pass other people too—at home I might bark when someone first knocks on the door or when I smell another dog outside the gate. But once I see them and hear that they're a friend, I warm up quickly! I’m still learning my rhythm on a leash, so I could use a little practice there but it's very manageable and once you choose your preferred style I learn quickly. Relationship building and positive, fun training are my language . My favorite toys are soft, plush ones that I can cuddle and play with. I love a good rough and tumble dog play session. I may be a bit much for some dogs; but find me a pal with my same play style and I'm in heaven. I live with a guinea pig, and we get along just fine. We even rest in the same room together, so I might do okay with cats too! I’m really good in the car—my family takes me with them all the time, and I love it. I also have great house manners, so I’m a pleasure to be around at home. I don't like to be be left alone . My primary breed is one that likes to keep their flock safe and I am very serious about that job. Currently I go everywhere with my family. I've been told that a patient consistent and gentle handling and understanding who I am would really help me a lot. I would love to have a family that could understand me and what my limits were. I try really hard to please but I need a consistent message of love and encouragement to make me the best boy. I know I can. You just have to work with me to let me know. Meet Cookie! Weighing around 75 pounds, Cookie is a total goofy sweetheart who loves people. Cookie is very affectionate and loves to snuggle. Cookie can be selective with other dogs, especially while on leash, but does great with a proper introduction. Cookie knows all kinds of commands, is housebroken, and is very food motivated. Due to her size, she would likely do best in a home without small children (although dog-savvy children 10+ would be okay). Licorice found herself on a euthanasia list at the crowded Contra Costa shelter in the East Bay and an unethical rescue group we had not heard of before pulled her and adopted her to a home that was not prepared for a terrified giant dog who was a flight risk. Licorice was so scared that no one had been able to pet her. Licorice disappeared from her adopter's yard in Calistoga after being there less than three hours. She was in an unfamiliar area and had no one she could trust. Since this happened in our area, WCAL was asked to help catch her safely before she was hit by a car or caused an accident crossing a very busy road. It took 72 days and a lot of chicken and patience since no one could get within 20 feet of this big, smart dog, but Licorice was caught in a specialized trap and now she is safe. Her adopter asked us to find her a great home that can meet her needs. We had her spayed and she got a clean bill of health from our veterinarian. We were surprised to learn that Licorice is just a baby at perhaps one year old. Now Licorice is in a foster home with a local reward based trainer who is helping her get a fresh start. They are working on all the basics like potty training, crate training, walking on leash, taking treats from strangers, and making new friends. Licorice is really enjoying the company of other dogs and playing in play groups with them. She trusts dogs more than humans, but we're making progress. She LOVES treats! She likes dogs of all sizes, but isn't always aware of her size or how intimidating she can be to smaller dogs. Her ideal adopter has another well socialized, confident dog, a calm home without many regular visitors, and is committed to force free animal handling. She is going to bond closely with her next human and be an amazing companion. At only one year old, she's very much a silly puppy who likes stealing shoes, playing with toys and deserves an understanding and patient person who is ready for a long term commitment. We don't want this special girl to ever find herself scared at the back of a lonely kennel or running loose on the streets again! Follow us on social media for daily updates!
