Story
Meet Trevor! Trevor was spotted roaming around PG County as a stray for over a week, a county that has historically banned his breed. He was seen going up to walkers and other dogs on the street seeking attention and was clearly a young dog. WDR adopter and local animal advocate, Pink, was worried for his safety and brought him home. Trevor is the 5th dog Pink has rescued from her Riverdale, MD community, and WDR has found forever homes for each of them. Now it’s Trevor’s turn. Trevor is currently bunking with Pink and WDR alum Bella. He easily integrated into their home and has become good pals with Bella. He wants to play with her but also respects her space, and he seems most content if she’s around. If he notices she’s out of view, he will anxiously start searching for her. Trevor has quickly picked up on the rules of home life, is already housetrained, and has learned how to use the doggy door. Pink reports he is very well-mannered in the home, with no running or unscheduled chewing. He will bark at noises and people outside, but that’s improving as he’s settling in and getting more familiar. While Trevor is a young pup (maybe a year old) he has a moderate energy level. He loves going on walks and his leash skills are improving, and while he pulled and barked at first, he’s doing so much better — we think leash walks were new to him. Now, he gets two daily walks and some playtime in the yard for fetch and romping with Bella. He likes to play catch but after a few throws, he gets bored. Mostly he wants to follow Pink around the house and cuddle when she settles down. He loves a bone to chew on and enjoys his toys, but more so when he and Bella compete for the same one. They have done very well sharing. We checked in with Pink for a quick Q&A: Personality? Confident for sure and very snuggly! Have you seen him around kids? I have not seen him around young kids - but I think being kind of a puppy himself, he’d be great with them. I think he would cuddle up and watch Dora the Explorer all day long if you let him and be very gentle. Does he meet new people and other dogs well? He greets new people and visitors very well. We’ve had a mixed experience meeting new dogs. He’s done well meeting my friend's female German Shepherd who visited us but reacted to another friend’s male dog. He had not yet been neutered at the time, so we are going to retry after he recovers from his neuter surgery. "Trevor is a delightful dog to have around. He is so happy with his routine! He enjoys mealtime - he has quite the appetite! He enjoys Bella’s company and has certainly taken the role as her little brother. He wants to hang out with her, but his main focus is the human. At first, he would follow my every move. He seems a bit more comfortable now and will pick a spot and stay and even hang out on the porch for a bit when I’m inside. He is very cuddly and simply adores attention. He will sleep through the night and only gets up in the morning when I get up. I fall in love with all dogs I take in, but if there were to be a favorite, I would say Trevor is the one." What I love about Trevor: So smart So handsome So cuddly So well behaved (at home) So connected with me/humans I love that he’ll get up in the morning when we (Bella and I) get up I love that when he is done at mealtime he won’t bother Bella if she’s not I love that he follows Bella inside when I leave for work and that they are both looking out the window with joy when I pull up   FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 8/15/24 Trevor is great with his bestie, Bella, but had some challenges meeting unknown dogs on leash. We brought in a trainer to assess Trevor and work with Pink to improve his leash skills. The trainer feels that much of Trevor's reactivity on leash comes from uncertainty and not knowing what to do on leash vs. agression. He lacks confidence in what to do and will bark to avoid interaction with unfamiliar pups. He needs a leader to teach him what's expected and give him repeated exposure to work through his uncertainty. After two sessions, we checked in with Pink for a training update: "He is doing sooo much better - He doesn’t react to dogs in their own yards anymore  but still some work to do when he sees another dog being walked in close proximity - except for - and this is great - we walked past the dog he was hanging around with when he was roaming as a stray and the reunion was good! It was tense for a few minutes… but not aggressive and we were able to continue walking with zero conflict! I praised him A LOT! He pulls when I walk with Bella, but if he is pulling too much, I stop and he walks backs towards me and slows down his stride. Improvement is steady, I would say!" Good boy Trevor! ******* We are looking for loving family with some dog experience to help Trevor be his best selt. He's such a sweet boy with a social nature and a great disposition with all people. He's good with kids too, and can have good doggie relationships, it just needs to be right match for him like sweet Bella. Story
Meet Ivy a.k.a June Bug.... This sweet girl was rescued from an unstable situation and is just as sweet as she can be. She was surrendered to the rescue by her owner, who loves her but is an addict and can not properly care for her or himself. An animal advocate in the community became aware of the situation and reached out for help. Initially, we provided the owner with food for Ivy and planned to provide a source of shelter, but as we learned more about the situation, we knew we had to get her out. It was hard for him but Ivy's owner made the unselfish decision to do what was best for her and give her the chance for a better life. Junebug came into our care needing basic vet care but was in good health overall. She needed some time to mourn the loss of her person and acclimate to her new environment, but once she did, her sweet, fun personality emerged. She’s a very social girl with a moderate energy level and good house manners. She’s been fostered with dogs, cats, and kids. She’s excellent with all people, gentle with cats and kids, and is a good pup companion for the right dog fit. She can be a great playmate and meets dogs well on leash. She is best paired with a calm, confident dog, and playful would be ideal. She would love life as an only dog too getting all the attention and snuggles. Junebug is the ultimate companion pup. We checked in with her foster for an update: “Junebug is an angel. She is super friendly, a couch potato, and a champion cuddler. She is totally housetrained, crate-trained, and not destructive at all. I don’t feel the need to crate her. She walks well on leash and only pulls a little when it’s time to meet a new best friend. She meets people and dogs well on leash, and will likely work in a butt wag and happy dance when she meets someone new.  Junebug is very smart too and already knows 'sit,' 'stay,' 'shake' and 'leave it.' I have two cats and she has been face to face with them, ears up and tail wagging. No growling or lunging. She plays with toys now and sometimes likes to wrestle. She’s definitely a Velcro dog. I think she knows we saved her so she’s a pleaser. She is very kid-friendly. My 5-year-old granddaughter loves her too!” Awesome dog alert! Junebug is pure sweetness and needs a family to love. We are looking for a committed family, couple, or individual adopter to give this very good girl the life she deserves.  Apply today!  BREED ESTIMATE: AmStaff/Lab Mix GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  ~ 52 lbs  APPROXIMATE AGE: ~  3 years old COAT TYPE:  Short coat ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/spayed/microchipped LOCATION:  Alexandria, VA   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
Meet Blanche, named after the sassy southern belle from the Golden Girls. This gorgeous Bully girl was found abandoned in a neighborhood cul-de-sac. She sat in the same spot all day waiting for her owners who never returned.:smiling_face_with_tear: Some humans really don’t deserve dogs. She was unspayed and had recently had puppies and, like many of the outside dogs we rescue, she was heartworm positive. Blanche was fortunate that one of our foster moms, Cindy, lives only a few streets away and became aware of the situation and took her in. That was Blanche’s lucky day and the start of a new life. Blanche has had a seamless transition to her foster home and is living in a foster home with a mom, dad, two grandparents, and two dogs. She sees the grandkids almost every weekend and does well with them. She is a very affectionate, sweet girl with good house manners and already knows her basic commands! We checked in with her foster mom, Cindy, for an update: “Blanche has been a delightful foster. She is very affectionate and loves attention. She has little respect for your personal space and will always look for your lap to lay her 57-pound head on :) She will even butt out other dogs to get attention but is never aggressive just assertive. She is very trusting of humans and will allow you to do anything to her...I can cut and grind her nails, bather her, clean her feet, give her pills, etc...She’s easy going about it. Blanche is an interesting mix of energetic and complete calm. She will sit on the couch with you while you relax, read, or watch TV, but she also loves to play and go for walks. We hike every day about 2 miles. She will pull when walking at times but then can walk nicely at times too. She would be an amazing walking and hiking buddy for someone and is a dog you can take with you anywhere. She rides great in the car. I leash her in the back if she’s with our other dogs, but if she’s solo, she loves to ride shotgun. She is not afraid of the car and jumps right in. She does well meeting new people and other dogs on leash. Sometimes she’ll bark in excitement if she sees a dog, but just wants to meet them. Although she loves to run and play outside, Blanche is very calm inside and has great house manners. She’s potty trained and has not had a single accident in the house since we brought her home. She doesn't chew and do destructive things, so we trust her in the home free roam. She is crate trained but we only used the crate the first week for bedtime. Now Blanche sleeps soundly through the night right next to our bed. I think Blanche will make a great family dog and has done well with all my grandkids. She will play with them outside and enjoys having toys or balls thrown. You can take anything out of her mouth. She does jump up at times but we have tried to break that habit. She is very smart and treat-motivated and learns quickly. She can be a little protective of her toys around new dogs, so we let them all build rapport before re-introducing toys. She will also try to butt in to get the other dogs' treats if you are not careful, so I make her sit before eating and before treats.” ****** We think Blanche needs an active home and someone with some Bully breed experience would be ideal. She will make a great family dog or do well paired with an active single person or couple who wants to have a dog they can take anywhere. She would be fine as an only dog or best matched with a dog who has a similar playful energy and social nature. Story
This animal is being fostered in the South but transport to a location near you is included in your adoption fee. We use Rescue Riders Pet Transport, (www.rescueridersllc.net), the most animal-friendly transport on the road. Meet the President of the Ittie Bittie Pittie Committee, East TN Chapter - Spring Roll!! 😍 This petite girl was picked up by another one of our other dog’s foster parents (even though they are already completely full at their home) because they couldn’t bear to see her abandoned. We offered to help if they were able to continue to foster, even short term, and they said yes! Spring Roll was producing milk when she was picked up so we believe she recently had puppies but they were nowhere to be found. Witnesses say they saw someone dump her out of a car 😭 How can people be so cruel?!? So far, Spring Roll has been a perfect little lady in her foster home and has done well with the 4 year old human she met as well as 3 other dogs in the foster home. She will be ready to go home after she is spayed. Website: WoofWoofFosters.org
