Story
Meet Ava! This gray pittapotamus came to the Shelter as an owner surrender after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. Ava was described as friendly with strangers by her previous guardians. She has not lived with children previously but has meet children and did well. She is house trained and was crated when left alone. Ava’s favorite things are running, sniffing, and cuddling. Prior to coming to the Shelter, Ava had a dog friend who was a male pitbull of a similar size. She would play with him and enjoyed his company. In her previous home as well as the Shelter, we have observed some reactivity when on leash/behind barriers. Adopters should set Ava up for success to avoid her practicing the behaviors related to reactivity by walking her in low traffic areas and working on disengagement from other dogs/focus on her guardian through force free training. Ava met two similarly sized dogs (Hudson, male pittie, and Sprinkles, female Catahoula). She comes on strong on strong, plays rough but was appropriate in her play. A home with a dog that enjoys that style of play and is fairly dog savvy may be a fit. Any resident dogs in the home are required to meet prior to adoption. Due to Ava’s play style that may not be every dog’s cup of tea, adopters are highly recommended to avoid dog parks and instead set up one on one playdates with known, dog social dogs. We do not have any history of Ava living with cats. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Foster, Adopt OR Foster-to-Adopt me! Sweet pittie Tito has beautiful eyes, a contagious grin… and a purr?   Two-year-old Tito is healthy, potty trained, walks well on leash, and loves learning new tricks. Long hikes on the weekend get Tito’s energy out, and he spends his weekdays napping on blankets near his foster mom. Tito is easy-and naturally quiet. He rarely barks, but makes piggy snorts and purrs throughout the day.  (We think he’s 1/3 dog, 1/3 cat, and 1/3 pig!)   Tito was shy when he arrived at the shelter, but warmed up with treats and attention. He  bonds tightly to any gentle person who shows him patience and love. Once you’re his person, sweet Tito enjoys giving kisses, getting couch cuddles, and making you laugh with silly bum-wiggles!    Tito loves other dogs, and easily made friends in shelter playgroups. He will be a fantastic brother for another dog.    Tito needs a dog-savvy home, ideally with a yard so Tito can roll around on the grass. (As we said - part pig.) We recommend a home without small children; Tito seems to like kids, but can be a bowling ball when he gets the zoomies. He needs a patient family that commits to positive training methods - this gentle boy needs spoiling, not discipline!   If you can give that to Tito, he will repay you with silliness, loyalty, and love.     Please help us learn more about you by filling out our online application: www.tinyurl.com/AdoptMeNow and we will arrange a meet and greet!  September 22, 2024, 12:05 am

Story
Foster to/or Adopt me!   Gorgeous Georgie will be the perfect companion for you and your fur-baby!   Georgie has beautiful hazel eyes; silky, can’t-stop-petting-them ears; a cute sploot; and a freckled snoot!  But this 1.5-year-old boy has more to offer than just his good looks.  He has heart and brains, too!   Georgie is a little shy with new people, likely due to past mistreatment.  He needs a couple of weeks to fully settle into a new home.  But all it takes to win Georgie’s trust and adoration is a little patience and kindness.  Once you’re his person, Georgie will climb into your lap for kisses and cuddles!  And if he thinks you’re sad, Georgie will wiggle on the ground until you laugh and scratch his belly!   Super-smart Georgie is already potty-trained, knows how to sit for a treat, and loves sleeping in his crate.  He learned how to walk nicely on leash just by watching other dogs!  With continued positive training, Georgie will be the most impressive dog in your neighborhood.   Georgie lights up around other friendly dogs, and would love a dog-sibling in his forever home.  He is always ready to romp and play with a new dog-friend, but knows to be gentle with smaller dogs and to take correction from his elders. He met an adult cat and kittens and he was so sweet around them, even a little worried!    Georgie even has his own Facebook page! Check it out: https://m.facebook.com/61562046697941/    We know that he is a very special boy that deserves a loving home.  If that could be with you, please fill out our online application: www.tinyurl.com/AdoptMeNow Foster-to-Adopt is an option!September 22, 2024, 12:05 am

Story
I’ve had Mia since she was a puppy. She is approximately 13-14yrs old. We found her on Craigslist before it was illegal. She is very loyal & a cuddler. I am in a new apartment & her breed is restricted. She would need to be with someone or a smaller dog, she gets along with smaller dogs but not larger dogs. A larger dog attacked her once & that is why she is scared of them. I’m looking to home her with someone who is home consistently & or elderly because she is a senior herself.

Story
Aspen was adopted from the Monterey County SPCA. Her birthday is April 10th 2016. She was born at the SPCA. DNA revealed Aspen is 50% American Staffordshire Terrier, 37.5% Siberian Husky, and 12.5% German Shepherd. Aspen is a sweet and loyal dog. She enjoys being home and relaxing with family, as well as her daily walks. Aspen knows commands sit, stay, off, lay down, leave it, take it, let’s go, move it, go outside, go inside, paw (shake), and roll over. Aspen is not crate trained, but she does sleep in her own dog bed. She walks with a gentle leader. Aspen needs a new home because she no longer gets along with other pets. Aspen does not have experience with cats other than chasing strays in the yard, as we are allergic. Aspen has been around children of all ages and loves kids. They are the perfect height to kiss faces. For more information please contact us.

Story
Hi everybody! My name is Snow White, and I'm a 2-year-old, spayed pit bull that currently weighs about 53lbs. I can't wait to say hello—I'm a silly, happy love bug who jumps for joy when meeting new people. I also enjoy 'talking' to my friends: I bark to say hello, and I bark when we're playing fetch, so you know when to throw the ball. I have a lot of energy, but once I've had my playtime and walk, I can't wait to be showered with affection. If you stop scratching me, I'll put my paw on your knee as a way of saying 'more, please!' Did I mention that I'm a very smart girl who excels at nose work? I even find the treats when they hide them somewhere high, and I sit and wait patiently to be rewarded. I'm the whole package: smart and pretty with tons of personality! Please be sure to bring in the entire household, including any resident dogs, to meet me prior to adding me to the family. I'm hoping for a family with adults only or families with older children that are familiar bully breeds like me and have experience teaching dogs how to share and be patient with treats. For more information about me, just ask Customer Service about Snow White! ID# A946068 I recently went on a field trip with one of my PHS Volunteer friends! Here's how I did: Today, Snow White went on a three-hour off-site trip and visited three different locations. Once the car door was open, she jumped right into the back seat. During the car ride, she intermittently whined softly. The first location was Seal Point Park in San Mateo. We walked along the Bay Trail and up the hill, avoiding the dog run area. Snow White was all business and did not enjoy taking breaks to appreciate the scenery. If we spent too much time in one spot, she would start whining until we moved again. We encountered lots of people, bicycles, and dogs but managed to keep a distance from everyone thanks to the wide paths. Snow White tried to visit all the dogs out of curiosity, displaying no aggressive behavior. She handled joggers and bikes passing and approaching as well. She initially bolted after birds but, by the end of the walk, she was calm even when walking through a flock of pigeons in the parking lot. The second location was Parkside Aquatic Park in San Mateo. Snow White did more exploring and walked into the water, though not deep enough to get her belly wet. She ignored small children playing in the sand and a group of people who were making loud noises. She glanced in their direction when there was an extra loud noise but otherwise ignored the group. The third location was Hillsdale Shopping Center. We walked one lap on the first level and half of the upper level, avoiding the food court. Snow White ascended and descended the stairs without hesitation. She was unfazed by the various people walking around, including those with unusual gaits, using canes, four-wheel walkers, and toddlers. She walked past them without reacting. The only thing that bothered her was a 48-inch tall stuffed giraffe at the entrance of Go! Calendars, Games & Toys store. She froze for a moment but then continued walking by, ignoring the stuffed animal.Unless otherwise indicated, adoptable animals are located at our Lantos Center for Compassion at 1450 Rollins Road, Burlingame, CA 94010.  You may call us at 650-340-7022 to schedule an appointment, or just drop by. Story
Meet Cricket, the petite white and gray boxer mix. Cricket came into the Shelter as an owner surrender. Cricket lived in a home with a woman and another dog. Her favorite things to do in the previous home are snuggle, play and run. Cricket is currently hanging out in a foster home to take a break from the Shelter and gain some confidence. Her foster reports: “Cricket is a wonderful, sweet dog. She is smart, a quick learner, and human-focused, On leash, she likes to walk in the city or on trails and generally doesn`t pull. She likes to play and have fun, and is able to settle and cuddle by your side. She notices other animals, especially dogs, but doesn`t act aggressively, more it seems like she wants to play. She sleeps well in a crate at night. Overall, she is a delight!”Due to some reported prey drive in her previous home, Cricket is required to go to a home without cats or small animals. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week!
