Story
Age: 10 months Size: 65 lbs Estimated breed: Pit bull/Staffordshire bull terrier Perfect home: Zara has grown up with older kids 12 and older and done well with them. She has lived with cats but enjoys the chase, so needs a cat-free home. She loves the other dogs in her foster home who she's grown up with, but can be wary meeting new dogs, especially super energetic and playful ones. She would do okay with another medium or large dog with a slow introduction and decompression time. She'd also thrive as the only pup in the home! Update from my foster 6/25: Every morning when I am taking 30 seconds to put on my shoes to go outside with the dogs, Zara waits patiently at the door, staring lovingly at me (even after sleeping beside our bed all night). She is so loyal! How could you not smile when you’ve got her little face watching your every move? After a long day of helping me work and playing in the yard, she cuddles up on the couch with all her doggie foster siblings, not leaving any room for the human family members! She is such an easy pup to have around and deserves a family of her own. She’s waited six months already, far longer than all her siblings who joined forever homes months ago. Update from my foster 4/7: Zara is rocking it at her Board and Train! During her first week, we were helping her understand expectations and boundaries when it comes to food, bones, play time, and general manners. All the concerns she came with are now in the past and we are focusing on teaching her how to be the best puppy she can be. Which she's already amazing I might add. Seriously......if I were in the market to add to my zoo, Zara would be staying!! She is the best puppy and will make an amazing companion for the right family. Zara has been learning skills such as Sit, Focus, Orienting when called, Walking on leash, and Leave It this past week. Aside from those skills that are strictly verbal, we always start with hand cues and body language. Why? Because dogs don't understand English until it is taught to them. Dogs communicate through body language, so we work with them in ways they best understand before introducing a foreign language. She is super smart and quite the cuddler!   Zara and her family came to us under very sad circumstances. While conducting community outreach and providing straw and dog houses, our southern shelter partner came across mama Zainab and her fives babies, living outside in the middle of winter. Mama was chained up and had a heavy padlock around her collar, weighing her down. She was trying to nurse her five babies while she was already emaciated herself. Volunteers were able to convince the owners to surrender the puppies to them so they could seek immediate veterinarian care. Unfortunately, one of the puppies did not make it, but the remaining four puppies responded well to getting food in their tummies and warming up inside.    The Z litter is now safe in foster care and can't wait to find forever homes! They are super sweet, spunky little puppies. They love playing with each other and are currently in foster care with other dogs, a cat, and children. They are blank slates ready to be shaped and molded into the perfect dog by their forever families! They are looking for families with lots of time and patience to teach them everything a young dog needs to know.    To adopt Zara, please apply on our website! www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age or breed of any of our dogs. All of our dogs are working on their crate and house training.   PA Kennel License #18366July 30, 2024, 10:27 am

Story
Age: 11 months Size: 51 lbs Estimated breed: Pit bull/American Staffordshire terrier mix Perfect home: At least one other dog, no kids under 10 Update from my foster 4/7: Jude is one perfect puppy! He sleeps through the night better than my adult dogs, and I usually have to wake him up and force him to go outside in the morning/evening! He has not had any potty accidents in several months and will go to the door when he needs to go out, though he does get frequent breaks every 2-3 hours to go outside. He is crated when I leave the house and when he eats his meals, and he knows to go into the crate on his own. He sleeps in a dog bed in my bedroom at night and understands that he’s not allowed onto the human bed (the resident chihuahua’s rule, not mine). He is very respectful of all the other dogs in the home and is very submissive to them all. He has a bad habit of chasing the cats in the house but responds immediately when you tell him “no.” He’s not aggressive with them but does enjoy the chase, so if you have cats in the home they would need to be brave and dog-savvy enough to hold their ground and give him a good “boop” when he tries to chase. He is pretty low-key for a puppy but definitely still gets bursts of puppy energy where he will run zoomies in the yard, often throwing his favorite toy around on his own. He loves to fetch and is great about bringing the ball or toy back to you to throw it for him. If I didn’t have my grouchy senior chihuahua, I would definitely be keeping Jude - he is seriously the sweetest, gentlest, most well-behaved foster pup I have ever had the joy of fostering!   Jude was surrendered to the shelter when he was only 5 months old. He was extremely scared in the scary shelter environment, which is no place for a young puppy. Fortunately, a foster stepped up so we were able to get him out of the shelter and into a foster home while he looks for his forever home! Jude is around 7 months old and weighs 35 lbs, so we don’t anticipate he’ll be a super large dog! He is nervous with new people but always sweet with them. He warms up after a day or two and once he does, be ready to have a constant shadow by your side! He shares his foster home with multiple other dogs and cats who he does great with. Due to how shy he is initially, he would be happiest in a home with at least one resident dog to show him the ropes, and no young kids. He does well in his crate overnight and is picking up on house training quickly. He loves playing with other dogs and is a big fan of playing fetch, too! Jude is looking for a patient and loving family who can show him that people aren't so scary and demonstrate what unconditional love looks like!   To adopt Jude, please apply on our website! https://www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age or breed of any of our dogs. All of our dogs are working on their crate and house training.   PA Kennel License #18366December 18, 2024, 12:16 pm

Story
Age: 1 year Size: 50 lbs Estimated breed: Pit bull terrier mix Perfect home: No cats, no dogs   Laszlo was surrendered to a local shelter when he was only six weeks old, along with his siblings and his mom. Everyone was extremely malnourished, suffering from skin infections, dehydrated, and lethargic. We were able to get everyone into foster care, and each dog thrived and found forever families of their own!    Now, one month shy of his 1st birthday, Laszlo finds himself being returned to the rescue by the only family he's ever known, and our hearts are absolutely broken for him. Laszlo grew up with two little girls who he loved dearly, and reportedly looked for them whenever they left the house. He grew up with another large male dog, who he played well with, but also got into quite a few scuffles with. From what we can gather, their play would become too intense, causing the dogs to fight. This is an overstimulation issue and can easily be corrected and managed with training, especially since Laszlo was adopted when he was still a puppy. Unfortunately, his family didn't think training was necessary :( During a scuffle with the other resident dog, one of the children in the home tried to separate the dogs (no adults were present for the fight) and got bit.    We got Laszlo back into our care and into a board and train program, where he is excelling! He is super smart and eager to please and picking up on all his basic obedience and leash manners quickly. He would be happiest as the only pup in the home but can pass by other dogs on leash just fine without reacting! He just prefers to be your one and only, soaking up all your love and attention. We’d love to line up a home for him directly after training! As an added bonus, his adopters will receive all three of his follow-up lessons with our professional trainer for free.   We are committed to finding Laszlo a forever home who is as invested in his well-being as we are. After losing the only family he's known, he deserves the absolute best FOREVER home, one who will commit to training, daily exercise and mental stimulation, and plenty of love.    To adopt Laszlo, please apply on our website! https://www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age/breed of any of our dogs.
