Story

Spice is a handsome 2-1/2 year old male American Pit Bull Terrier mix who was found on Colegate Drive in Marietta Ohio around 10:30am on the morning of October 31, 2023. Fortunately for Spice, a Good Samaritan was able to persuade him to accompany her to the safety of our shelter and away from the busy road where he was roaming around. Spice was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. Spice has a dark brown/brindle-and-white short smooth coat, a long tail, and a beautiful symmetrically-marked face with dark brown eyes, a dark chocolate nose, and short floppy ears. This big boy was understandably very nervous when he was brought to the HSOV. It broke our hearts to see how scared and terrified he truly was. Our compassionate staff and kennel techs are doing their best to calm his fears and to help him realize he is among friends who care about him. These photos of Spice were taken after hours on the evening of October 31, 2023 when HSOV Executive Director Amy Rogers and HSOV Volunteer/Board Member Tracy Lynn Moore teamed up to spend time with Spice and to accompany him for a short walk in order to begin gaining his trust. Our photographer stayed a safe distance away and snapped his pictures 'from afar' so as not to make Spice nervous or feel that he was being pursued. Spice is a friendly boy but tends to be reactive. Spice weighs 55 lbs and has already been neutered. We hope that someone will recognize this boy and help us reunite him with his family. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Spice was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Sadly, nobody called or came looking for Spice.

Spice casually meandered around our photo area but always stayed close to Hannah and looked to her for moral support, comfort, and security. Spice has a friendly, rather cautious personality and prefers not to rush into a relationship. Hannah wanted to let potential adopters that Spice is a sweet dog who just takes a few minutes to warm up to new people that he doesn't yet know, so please don't judge him based upon his kennel presence. Spice was a pushover for 'good boy' treats' and waited patiently until Hannah told him it was ok to take the small treats .. And then Spice gently took them from Hannah's hand. Spice weighs 55 lbs and has already been neutered. We kept hoping that someone would recognize Spice and help us reunite him with his family, but that happy reunion has not taken place. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Spice was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Sadly, nobody called or came looking for Spice. Loki (fka Idaho) is a handsome 2-1/2 year old male Pit Bull Terrier mix who originally was in our shelter as a tiny newborn puppy when his mother (Layla) was brought to HSOV on December 17, 2021 along with her four newborn babies (Idaho, Russet, Yam and Yukon). Layla was a good mother to her puppies and she eventually went back home with her family. Her puppies all found homes during the new year (2022). Loki came back to our shelter in the Fall of 2023 and has been readjusting to shelter life for the past several months while enjoying a large 'bachelor apartment' in our Safe Haven facility. He has recently made a move from Safe Haven to a smaller apartment adjacent to the lobby of our shelter .. Loki is usually seen looking through the window when visitors come to our shelter in hopes that special someone will offer him the home that he has been dreaming of for the past six months+ Loki is ready to move on with his life and find an appropriate home of his very own. This magnificent boy has a black-and-white coat, huge paws, a long tail, and an adorable face with blue eyes, a black button nose on his chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. Loki's left ear is white and his right ear is black. Loki is looking for a home where he could be an 'only child' since he is not good with other dogs or cats. He would most likely be ok with older children who would be strong enough to withstand his 'hugs' and robust playtime. Loki is big boy who currently weighs 105 lbs and is very strong on a leash (especially when he jumps). He would probably do best with an experienced handler who could give him the attention and exercise that he loves. Loki is merely an overgrown puppy in a very large body. He is full of playful energy and doesn't know his own strength. This collage of photos were taken on July 2nd 2024 when HSOV Lead Canine Kennel Tech Jared Nash accompanied Loki for outdoor Fourth of July pictures in his festive red/white/blue bandana when Loki was chosen to announce our HSOV Wednesday Wish List for July 3rd. Loki has already been neutered, so he could leave our shelter immediately with an approved HSOV adoption application. And as an added bonus, we can offer BABY PHOTOS of Loki (whose baby name was Idaho since he was such a cute little pudgy potato) UPDATE: Loki went home with a foster family on October 4, 2024 so that he can enjoy a real home environment while he waits for someone to adopt him and give him a forever home. Loki has been slowly introduced to the other dogs in his foster home, and they are getting along well. Loki went home with foster family on October 13, 2024 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Loki was returned to HSOV on December 7, 2024 by his heartbroken foster family. They truly loved Loki but could no longer keep him since he did not get along with one of their resident dogs and had caused bodily injury to her.

Tabatha is a beautiful 4-year old female Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever mix who was brought to the HSOV on July 23, 2024 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden along with Tabatha's male companion (Kenny) who is most likely her brother. Tabatha has a white short smooth coat with large black patch on her left side and at the base of her long tail. Tabatha has the most adorable face and the nicest 'smile'. She appears to have borrowed an eyebrow pencil to enhance her black eyebrows but didn't have access to a mirror when she applied her makeup (smile). Tabatha has a slender muzzle and short black semi-erect ears. This little lovebug was a pleasure to photograph when HSOV Kennel Tech Cadince Bibbee accompanied her for outdoor glamour pictures on July 26, 2024. Tabatha displayed a sweet, cheerful personality and adored attention from Cadince. Tabatha wags her tail the moment you make eye contact with her (and looks up at you with hopeful eyes and her cute smile). Tabatha weighs 58 lbs and walked fairly well on a leash for Cadince. Tabatha and Kenny had an unfortunate incident which placed them on a 10-day bite quarantine when they were brought to our shelter. They have 'done their time' and have been great 'guests' in our shelter. Their owner decided to surrender them to our shelter, so they are now looking for a new home. Tabatha will be spayed before being adopted by her new family (a requirement for HSOV adoptions to be finalized). Update: Tabatha was spayed on December 3, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine. She is ready to find her dream home with someone as special as she truly is. Tabatha's male companion (Kenny) has been neutered and is also still in our shelter and is looking for a fabulous home.

Major is an adorable one-year old male Hound mix who was found on State Route 676 near Marietta Ohio along with his companion (Captain). Thanks to Pet Search Alliance both dogs were safely confined, and they were picked up by our HSOV staff who brought them to HSOV on November 4, 2025. Neither boys were wearing a dog license nor were they microchipped. Major has a beautiful white and blue merle short smooth coat with dark tan highlights, a long tail, and a cute symmetrically-marked face with dark brown eyes, a black button nose, and short floppy ears. Major has a sweet personality and a super-friendly disposition Major weighs 45 lbs. Thanks to HSOV Kennel Tech Lauryn Hamilton for accompanying Major for his photo session on November 5th and helping him his best poses. Major and Captain were both pushovers for attention and loved being loved by Lauryn. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Major will be held for the mandatory three-day stray hold so that his family will have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. We believe that Major and Captain are most likely siblings (or related).

Bolt is an adorable 3-year old male Boxer/Labrador Retriever (??) mix who was brought to the HSOV late in the afternoon on August 19, 2024 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden who had picked him up in the vicinity of the Kiwanis Club (Gilman Avenue in Marietta Ohio). Bolt was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. This good-looking guy has a snow white coat, a patch of brown at the base of his long tail, and a beautiful face with soulful brown eyes, a black button nose on his cute long muzzle, and extra-large floppy ears. Bolt has a super sweet disposition and happy, outgoing 'Type A' personality. Bolt adored being the center of attention when we took preliminary photos in the shelter lobby shortly after his arrival. This little sweetheart was a pushover for attention when HSOV Executive Director Amy Rogers spent time with him (and HSOV Kennel Tech Rachel Elizabeth offered him 'good boy' treats). Bolt appeared to have been accustomed to spending leisure time on a comfy sofa since he was quick to take the initiative to sit on HSOV Volunteer Wendy Jo Irvin's lap. Bolt is a wanna-be lap dog. Bolt weighs 31.8 lbs and could easily gain a few pounds to fill out his slim trim physique. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Bolt will be held for three days so that his family will have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Note: We've learned that Bolt is NOT good with cats. Bolt went home with a foster family on October 22, 2024 who plans to adopt him after he is neutered. Bolt was neutered by the foster family's veterinarian, and he was officially adopted by his foster family on November 19, 2024. Update: Bolt was picked up near the Washington Street Bridge in Marietta Ohio on April 11, 2025 by the Marietta Police Department and brought to HSOV. Fortunately Bolt had a microchip, and we were able to contact his adopted family and he was placed on a 14-day hold for them. Sadly, his family decided to surrender him back to our shelter instead of reclaiming him .. So Bolt is looking for a new family who will love/cherish him forever and ever. He is such a good boy!! Bolt weighed 52 lbs when he entered the shelter on April 11, 2025. Bolt went home with a foster family on May 27, 2025 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Unfortunately Bolt was returned by his foster family on May 28th 2025. Update: Bolt went home with a foster family on July 27, 2025 who offered him the hospitality of a real home environment while he waits for his forever home (so that he doesn't have to be in a shelter kennel). Henry is a handsome 1-1/2 year old male Boxer/Terrier mix who was surrendered by his family on October 10, 2025. Henry was dearly loved by the family, but he had developed a bad habit of nipping/snapping at their children (and is the reason he was returned ..So we will a bit of Henry's background history with his current Petfinder/Facebook/Adoptapet listing: Henry made his original debut in our shelter when he was brought to the HSOV on July 1, 2024. Henry was an adorable 10-week old puppy at that time. Since there wasn't any location provided as to where he was found, it was unclear whether he was a stray or possibly an owner surrender. Henry had a brown short smooth coat, a long tail, and a cute puppy face with dark brown eyes, black shading on his chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. Henry weighed 7.5 lbs on July 4th when he scampered across the floor scales. This little playboy had a happy, outgoing personality and loved attention more than anything else in the world. Henry had typical puppy behavior and was always looking for mischief to get into during the chewing stage of his young life. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Henry was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Since nobody called or came looking for this baby boy, Henry went home with a foster family on July 24, 2024 who planned to adopt him after he was neutered (a requirement for HSOV adoptions to be finalized). Henry was neutered on October 1, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine. He was adopted by his foster family later that afternoon. Henry enjoyed one-year+ in his adoptive home and was very much loved by the family. But when Henry began nipping/snapping at the children, they made the difficult decision to return him so that he could find a more appropriate home. These updated photos of Henry were taken on October 11th 2025 when HSOV Volunteer Hannah MClain and HSOV Shelter Manager Tracy Lynn accompanied him for outdoor pictures. Henry has matured into a magnificent young man. He has a stunning tan short smooth coat, a long tail, and a beautiful chubby Boxer/Terrier face with brown 'teddy bear' eyes, a black button nose, and short semi-erect ears. Henry had not yet stepped on the scales for a weigh-in when these photos were taken, but an estimate would be that he weighs 60 lbs or so. Henry is very strong on a leash. He quickly obeyed the 'sit' command for several of his photos. Henry would likely benefit from some obedience/training classes and perhaps an experienced 'alpha' person to help him reach his full potential. Henry is a good dog who needs a little assistance to become the best dog (smile).
