Story
Meet Charlie, a friendly Pitbull mix with a playful spirit and goofy charm that brings smiles to everyone around him. Smart and eager to learn, he loves training and is a joy to work with. Despite his energy, he痴 also a perfect cuddle companion, ready to share quiet moments. Charlie痴 loving nature makes him an ideal family pet, filling your home with warmth and joy. Adopt Charlie and gain a loyal friend who will brighten your life! Charlie is a 1 - 2 yr old male Pitbull mix. He has a high energy level, so he would benefit from an active family with a fenced yard and plenty of space for daily exercise and play. He is loose and wiggly when greeting, and comes when called for snuggles. He also loves to hop up into your lap for hugs and kisses. Charlie does moderately pull on a leash, but with basic obedience training, he should be walking like a champ in no time! He is food motivated and knows the command sit. He mixes well with other dogs in a kennel, but is intensely interested in cats in the shelter environment. Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their own size; and dog meets with the resident dogs are always encouraged. Our cat test should be used as a general-purpose screening only to rule out overt aggression; we always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendation on suitability of placement with children by their ages is based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavior evaluations should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at this point in time; JHS believes all dog families need to be prepared to invest time and energy into training as well as provide common sense management of their new dog. We always encourage family to do some research on the breeds or mixes of breeds prior to adoption as many can have some unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Always remember that the majority of dogs at our shelter have been exposed to or may have kennel cough. Kennel cough is contagious to other dogs, please talk to your vet if you have any questions about kennel cough prior to adoption. Please ask your adoption counselor at time of adoption if you have any unanswered questions regarding illnesses and treatments of the pet that you are adopting. My adoption has been sponsored by Lucy Stella-Higdon! Thank you!! Meet Mac, a lively Pitbull with a heart full of warmth. This friendly chap is known for his playful and energetic spirit, always ready to engage in a game of fetch or tug-of-war. Mac's bravery shines through his curious nature, never shying away from exploring new environments or meeting new friends. His goofy antics will keep you entertained, his tail wagging as he chases his own shadow or pounces on squeaky toys. Mac's vibrant personality and unwavering loyalty make him the perfect companion. Adopt Mac and fill your life with laughter, love, and a faithful friend. Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their size in a group setting, and dog meet-and-greets with the adopter's dog(s) are always encouraged. A cat test may be conducted at the adopter's request but should only be used as a general-purpose screening to rule out overt aggression. We always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendations on the suitability of placement with children by their ages are based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavioral observations in the shelter environment should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at a given point in time and may not be indicative of a dog's overall mental health. The Joplin Humane Society believes all adopters need to be prepared to invest time and energy into working with their new dog, as animals arrive at the shelter from a variety of situations and scenarios and may have had little to no prior training. Dogs should never be fed together unless it is known that they do not possess resource-guarding tendencies. We always encourage adopters to research the breeds or mixes of breeds before adoption as many can have unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Keep in mind that the transition from the shelter to a home environment is stressful for dogs, and the Rule of 3 should be used as a rule of thumb when introducing a dog to their new surroundings. For the first 3 days, fear, anxiety, and stress levels are at their highest; and dogs may appear lethargic, remain hidden, are easily excitable, or have a loss of appetite. In the next 3 weeks, dogs will be actively developing a routine, and new personality traits may appear as stress levels decrease. During this period, it is recommended that adopters limit the dog's exposure to new people and places as they adjust and keep them in a crate or designated quiet room when left alone. Time outside of the home should be short, and crowds or loud noise should be avoided. After 3 months, a bond has developed between the dogs and their new family, and the animal should appear more comfortable in unfamiliar situations. For more information about this dog or any others at our Shelter, please visit www.joplinhumane.org. We are the Joplin Humane Society in Joplin, Missouri. 417-623-3642.

Story
Say hello to Nova who has now been at FFAA since September 2024. Due to unfortunate and unsafe family circumstances, we took Nova into our care. Having been with her family since she was only 7 weeks old, she had a difficult time adjusting to shelter life, a problem which would soon be compounded by some unexpected and complex medical issues. Nova has been deaf since birth. Due to not being able to hear herself, she can be more vocal than the average dog. However, she knows quite a few hand signals that we will show her future adopters, including one for "Quiet." Seemingly separate from her deafness, her ears are a little sensitive and infection prone which we keep at bay by making sure to clean out her ears a couple times a week! After her spay, we found out the hard way that Nova has a blood clotting disorder. Thanks to the quick actions of staff that day and our vet's ability to get her in for emergency surgery, her life was saved. However, her road to recovery has not been easy. As she was bleeding out, something happened in her body that caused her to lose the ability to move her back legs. She was able to drag her body around, but her feet kept knuckling over so severely that she soon scraped open her feet and then licked them into becoming wounds. Since then, we have been fighting a battle with her body. One leg regained full control fairly quickly whereas the other still consistently knuckles over most of the time. It has take months for her wounds to finally close. We have worked hard to keep her pain under control as well. Nova sees a sports medicine and rehabilitation specialist in early February for a complete exam and report and hopefully an plan to give her her mobility back.Until that time, she will be in her intake kennel, cut off from the world except for her few playgroup breaks in a day. That's why we'd love to find her either a medical/respite foster or a foster-to-adopt placement. If you'd like to know more, please email adopt.ffaa@gmail.com and we'd be glad to answer any and all of your questions. With regards to her personality, she is dog friendly (she really enjoys dogs licking her ears) and LOVES her tiny humans (she is great with kids and teens of all ages). She's a perfect family dog! She is described as being a friendly couch potato who is super affectionate. She is house trained. During the day, she spent her time indoors and free roaming, and she is accustomed to having the pick of her family member's beds to sleep in. Her passions include car rides and her blankies - she loves suckling on them. She's a huge fan of sunbathing, and she greatly enjoys trips to the creek. Due to her frustration and boredom, we have seen a higher energy Nova, who despite her funky leg and discomfort will still sit perched on top of couches, leap, run, zoom around, and overall have a great time during her exercise excursions. Once she's settled down into being someone's baby again, we expect her to return to her previous couch potato status. When we asked if there's anything that they would like Nova's future owner to know, we were told, "She is an amazing dog. She will greet you with a smile every time you walk in the dor. She loves her tiny humans; we are her emotional support people. She loves to be petted and blankets.

Story
Many of our longtime followers will recognize this dog's face, name, and story. Yes, this is our beautiful Kalie. Due to no fault of her own, she rejoined the other animals under FFAA's care September of 2024.All the way back in April of 2021, Kalie was found taking cover from a storm underneath someone's carport. That's when she joined the FFAA family for the first time. It took an entire 590 days, or 1 year and 7 months, for her to be chosen. The joy and relief staff felt on that day was indescribable. We hoped and believed that this was her final and forever home. We even received updates periodically -- she was settling in amazingly and her new family adored her. In our minds, she was a success story who we no longer needed to worry about. To our dismay, earlier in September, we received notice from her adoptive family informing us that they were moving very soon and would not be taking her with them. She had been with them for 650 days -- longer than her first stay at the shelter, and just 3 months away from what was supposed to be her 2nd "Gotcha Day" anniversary. As with 99% of our dogs, Kalie had been adopted out with the understanding that she was an inside dog. However, when she arrived back, we discovered that within just a few months, she'd become an outside only dog. When she left us for the first time, she was crate trained and housebroken. She continues to keep a clean kennel, so we are hopeful that she will not need to be re-potty trained. Kennel life greatly affected Kalie's mental health for the negative during her first stay here. We had to keep her in the intake hall permanently because even with only one day spent on the adoptable dogs hall, her reactivity and stress increased so significantly. Not only does this mean that she is seen less by potential adopters, it also means that we unable to intake as many dogs due to her having a permanent spot in our intake hall. She's been back for about a month now, and just as we suspected, she is already struggling. Our fear for her is that this time around, her stay will be even longer. We are terrified that she may not be able to recover from the permanent affects that kennel stress has on an animal's mind. Our hope is to find a foster for her - we would prefer foster-to-adopt or a long-term foster, but even a short-term foster who will get her out of the shelter and practicing her living-with-human skills would be invaluable. According to her original adoptive family, Kalie has been around adults, teenagers, and toddlers, and she has done well with all of those ages. She still remains fearful of adult men, but male children and teenagers she is friendly toward and not fearful of. In the past, Kalie was listed as dog selective - we recently re-tested her and found that she is dog neutral. This means that she is not unfriendly to dogs in her space and will even be tolerant with pushy behavior. We are working on slowly and positively introducing her to other dogs in hopes that she will start forming friendships and enjoy the companionship of other dogs instead of just ignoring them. However, absolutely no cats in the home for Kalie! In her owner surrender form, Kalie was described as: a couch potato, playful, friendly, enjoying physical affection, protective, always at your side, and occasionally nervous around men and loud noises. She knows "sit," "stay," and "come." She loves walks, hikes, going to the creek, and chewing on bones. She seems to prefer to entertain herself much of the time rather than begging for attention or for human playtime. We were told she travels well and that she's comfortable dressing up and wearing clothes. We asked her original adoptive family if there's anything they think her future owner should know; they said that "She needs a person or family that can give her a lot of attention, that is active, and that can spend lots of time with her. She is very sweet and loveable." Please share Kalie's story with your friends and family -- Kalie doesn't deserve to stay for another year and a half or more of her life in a shelter environment, especially when nothing she did landed her here. Our pet animals already have such short lifespans -- their unconditional love and acceptance demands that we make each day they have with us meaningful, joyful, and precious beyond measure.Email adopt.ffaa@gmail.com if you'd like to meet Kalie or have more questions about her.
