Story
Serenity is a sweet girl that's looking for a low traffic home. She has lived with another dog and a cat in her previous home, but she may be happiest not having to share her space with another dog. She likes to play with balls and chew toys! She's super loving and eager to please, especially if you have treats! Her ideal home will be one where she has a yard to play in as cars are scary and going for walks can be a bit much.

Story
Roland is the sweetest little guy. When he gets excited his tail wags and his whole body wiggles. Roland knows sit and down. He is good on walks for the most part. Sometimes his excitement can get the better of him and he will pull. He is excited by people, wildlife, cats, and other dogs. Roland can get jumpy when meeting new people outside but tends to be more reserved inside. He may knock down small children and can be mouthy when he gets excited. He has not exhibited aggression during the time I've had him but can play rough with an open mouth and may nip when overly excited. We are working on this and he has gotten better. Roland is crate trained and housebroken. When I first brought him home, he relieved himself in the house. We have corrected this, though he might regress in a new environment. Roland seems to have separation anxiety, he may be good for a long time but his limit is about five hours. I currently keep him in a spare bedroom when I am away. He is not destructive and does not relieve himself while I am gone. Roland has met other dogs. He tends to play hard, but nothing too aggressive. Roland needs reminding to be gentle and would do best dogs his size or bigger. Cats would need careful slow introductions. He is not a Velcro dog, but wants to be in the same room as you. Unless it is the bathroom. During those times he wants to be in his safe place, which is currently the spare bedroom. Roland seems limited with his jumping. I have to help him into the car and into the downstairs bedroom. He is good getting on the spare bedroom bed. Be prepared to lift this cute 50 pound dog. He will put his front paws up and let his person lift him up. Roland is an eager to please dog that needs an emotional support human. His adopter ideally would be a calm and secure leader willing to invest time and energy to build a secure attachment through training with clear and consistent expectations, gentle corrections and lots of praise. Adopter must be willing to provide plenty of exercise, play, and a variety experiences. In return, Roland will provide the sweetest emotional connection, loyalty, loving kisses and lots of snuggle time.

Story
Henry is very loving and cuddly inside the house! His funny and goofy personality gets him into a little trouble around the garbage and he has quite the time containing his curiosity. He loves to play and has done very good while playing with other dogs of the same size. Outside he can be a bit reactive to unfamiliar people and animals and throws a bit of a fit if he can't get to them. He's VERY treat motivated! Henry is a Priority Paw as he has been in the shelter for a long time. Volunteers say "Henry was super sweet, and loved getting the attention. He would need some help with leash skills as he pulled most of our walk/jog. If anyone is looking for a running partner, that loves people, this is your guy! He loved jogging with me and did not tire out until close to the end of our walk/jog. We passed a few different people and he was happy to see them. He was very excited to try to get squirrels and birds so he might not be the best with other small pets/birds." "Met Henry today, and we spent our time at Stephens Lake Park. He was excited to be out and about. Really pulled on leash any time we were walking, but would stop immediately and come right to me when called. He loved the lake and plunged in for a swim. Had blast playing fetch with large walnuts, tossing them in the air himself so he could chase them. Would love a yard where he could run and play (especially with balls). Henry needs someone with much patience and physical strength; he's a lot of puppy! But he's a good boy with a sweet heart, and with consistent, gentle, discipline he's going to mature into a loving and loyal family member." "Henry was such a delight and will be the best companion for someone who loves to really *play* with their dog! From the little time I spent with him, he was very intuitive and clever. He was obsessed with having his butt scratched."

Hickory is the ultimate goofball! From his silly little smile to his tippy tappy toes, Hickory is a kooky little guy through and through. Hicks is a big fan of any sort of play and loves throwing his stuffy toys through the air and chasing after them. He is also a HUGE fan of making snow angels and chasing his friends through the yard. I wouldn't say that Hickory is a low-energy dog, but as long as he gets a bit of exercise and mental stimulation every day, Hickory is a pretty chill guy. This handsome GoodBoy has excellent leash manners and a great recall. He's been working very hard on his manners and has graduated from the first level of classes at Lizzi and Roccos. Hickory can be a bit timid in new places and around new people, but he warms up very quickly- especially if snacks are involved! Aside from a couple accidents when he first came to live in his foster home, Hicks seems to be fully potty trained. He stays in the spare bedroom while his foster mom is at work and doesn't have any issues hanging out there alone until she's back. Hickory has gotten along very well with the other dogs in his foster home and has loved playing with other friends that he's made while out and about. He isn't the biggest fan of sharing his toys with other dogs, but really who is? Hicks will do a quiet little growl when his foster brother Rufus tries to steal his toys and will occasionally do a little bork at his super annoying foster brother, but has never gotten physical- he just gets a little hurt that his so-called-friend would do something like that to him. Although Hickory doesn't live with any cats in his foster home, he has spent lots of time with his Foster Aunt Kelsie's cats- Nichol and Houdini- and he seemed very impartial to their existence. When Hickory first came to the shelter, his condition was heartbreaking. He had lost most of his hair and had scratched his skin so raw that by the next morning, the walls and floor of his kennel were splattered with blood. Hicks has come such a long way and is looking great; however, he will likely need life-long care and medication for his allergies. His foster mom and the vets at the shelter are more than happy to go into detail about his veterinary care with applicants before adoption! Hickory is such a sweet, silly boy who has so much love to give. Don't let this one slip away!

Mistley is such a silly girl! She can be a bit shy in new places, but some treats and a nice belly rub are the ways to her heart. She loves to explore and follow her nose. This girl is up for adventures with you! Volunteers say "We walked around the Mizzou campus and stayed at home for a while. Mistley is kind of a shy girl at first but shows confidence to people pretty quickly. She behaved very well when she stayed at home." "Mistley was truly the softest dog I think I've ever felt. She was very shy but so sweet and angelic. She was good on the leash, except in rare silly moments where she became a parkour expert but was such a little sweetie. She is destined for life with someone who appreciates a true girlie pop."

Story
Mahi is a shy but sweet girl. Her ideal home, at least to start out, will be a low traffic one until she can settle in and get comfortable. She likes treats, knows a few tricks and really likes to chase soft, squeaky toys. Time and patience are going to be key with this gal! Her short term foster said "When first meeting new people, I can be shy. I don't like fast or sudden movements; you putting your hand up to my face; and want to approach you at my own pace. In the beginning I will be anxious about any type of petting or touch and may curl my lip and side eye you. Once I start to feel comfortable and safe I become more cuddly. The longer I'm around you the stronger my bond. I will become your shadow, as long as I'm the kind of shadow that can be in front of you. I don't always know where we are going and will stop midstride, causing you to trip over me...sorry about that. I will inspect every room you enter to make sure your safe. Any noises or movement outside the house? No worries, I'll warn you with several barks. I love to play tug of war and sometimes fetch but I'm still working on the release/drop part. I especially love plushy squeaky toys and will gently pull any stuffing out once it rips but it doesn't stop me from playing with a deflated toys. I do need several toy options, as I tend to get bored easily. After 15-20 minutes outside or a good tug of war session I get tired and will find a comfy spot to take a nap. The couch is nice, but laying on top of you is the best! I will settle for curling up next to you though. I do not like being cold, so if you could cover me up that would be great! When outside, I can pull, so I hope you're strong or at least sure footed. I bet I'll get better at this with practice. I do get excited when it's time to go out and may jump up on you, just tell me no and I'll get down. While playing with toys, I can also get a little to excited and try to jump, get a little vocal, and every once in a while nip at you. Again, I think I could learn to not do this. I will sniff the trashcan bit I don't dig in it. I will also watch you closely as you eat to make sure you don't drop anything. If you feel your foot getting wet that's just me drooling."

Story
Marley is a very loving gentle dog. We rescued him from a bad situation 2 years ago. He has never looked back. He loves kids and enjoys playing fetch, or just running with them. He is a cuddle dog if you can believe it, loves cuddling up at bedtime almost as he is human. He will sit forever right next to you even if you’re not petting him, just loving companionship. He is a very fit dog with 3 acres to rome on here, and thinks all small critters are fun to chase. He is well mannered, doesn’t beg, and patient when it’s feeding time. We are only rehoming due to my health and needing to move cross country to a home that does not have room for a big dog.

We got Zuma at an animal shelter as a baby- we hoped we could keep him. But our neighbors have a problem with him coming over to their house. We thought he would stay in our yard, but he doesn’t, Unfortunately. We don’t want to have to keep him chained up or on a shock collar. He is great with kids and such a sweet dog! Story
Miley is a crowd favorite. We all adore her and how far she’s come. She came to us TERRIFIED. She was afraid of everything. She didn’t want to come out of her kennel for days. She had been through so much trauma. Since then, she has flourished. She LOVES dogs. She will need at least one dog in her forever home as she relies so heavily on them for confidence. She is very affectionate and loves to give kisses. She will need time to not be afraid of new people. She will initially want to hide. But once she warms up, she’ll be smitten. And so will you! She’s low maintenance. She loves her crate, loves to play outside and loves her toys. She doesn’t ask for much. She will also require a securely fenced yard. Miley's adoption fee has been waived. We do not respond to inquiries sent on Adopt-a-Pet. Please fill out our adoption application at www.phpdr.org if you’d like to inquire about one of our adoptable dogs.
