Story
HI - I'M DREAM! I'm a 4-year-old blue-and-white Pit Bull Terrier, in need of a foster or forever home. I have been waiting for a couple of years for a home - and keep getting overlooked since I suppose, I'm one of many who need homes right now. I am an easygoing boy - I love people and have done well with other dogs. I was surrendered at the shelter because my previous owners said they could not handle a puppy. Like most pitties, I'm a strong boy and will do well with an experienced owner who wants a loving companion. I love to chase the hose and will bark whenever I see it because I get so excited! I'm definitely a water dog. I'm also very food motivated and I love treats. I weigh about 50 pounds. Can you foster or adopt me? Please email for an application.

Story
HI - I'M MEERA! I am a beautiful & petite 5-year-old blue & white Pit Bull Terrier/Staffie in need of a foster or forever home. I've been waiting quite awhile for my adopter to find me! I weigh only about 45 lbs. I am a loving and cuddly girl and would do great with a single person, a couple, or a family with older kids. I love car rides, and love to go out and about and enjoy the sunshine. I'm not a big fan of other dogs, so will be best as the princess of my own castle, though I have not been leash reactive at my current location. Can you foster or adopt me? Please email for an application.

Story
HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON! I'M MARCY! I'm a sweet and lovable 8-year-old female red & white Pit Bull Terrier in need of a new home. There are a few things you should know about me. First, I truly do prefer to be an only dog, though would likely do well with a male pal, as I had one before. But I love people and am very loyal. I also love being petted, rubbed and given lots of affection. Secondly, I was attacked by another dog about a year ago and lost part of my nose, but this does not impact me one bit. I only look a little funny but it doesn't change my lovable personality. I have been waiting a long time for a home because apparently, nobody wants a funny looking dog who would love to be the only dog in the home. So if you can look past my imperfections, I would love to be your companion. I'm still very active and would be happy to go for walks and hikes. Can you foster or adopt me? I am currently looking for a foster or forever home. I weigh 64 lbs. Please email for an application.

Story
HI - I'M SANDY! I'm a 6-1/2-year-old sweet snuggler girl who needs a foster or forever home! I've been waiting for TWO YEARS for someone to choose me. I love to cuddle, hang out and watch TV, and go for walks, hikes, and other adventures. I do well with some dogs (I used to live in a home with a female dog), but prefer people to other dogs so I can get all of the attention. If you're looking for a snuggler, someone to share your bed and hug, I'm it! I truly am a lap dog, and I crave human attention and affection. I'm also super happy, and am just waiting for my person or people to come along. I weigh about 56 lbs. I would love a home for the holidays!

Story
Meet Hudson, the black and white pibble mix! Hudson came to the Shelter as an owner surrender at the beginning of December after his previous guardian’s home burned down and they had to place to keep him. In his previous home he lived with children age 12 and did well. He was described as an active boy who enjoys playing and running. Hudson lived with three other dogs and did well with them, provided they weren’t trying to share food.. that’s a bit of a no-go for this guy. Hudson has quickly won the hearts of staff since his arrival. He greets people with a blur of a wiggly body. He has been a client services foster pup (hanging out with staff in the front office) for some extra TLC while he is waiting for his adoptive home. He has been learning some life skills and manners to take into his adoptive home such as keeping his paws on the floor when someone comes to say “hi” and settling while people are doing their work. Hudson is enjoying the mental stimulation of +R learning and has caught on quickly with the help of play and yummy snacks. Hudson loves squeaky toys and makes staff laugh as he happily squeaks his toy while playing in the office area. Several staff have commented how adorale, social and goofy sweet Hudson is. With some patience in the transition to a new home, we anticipate this love bug will be someone’s BFF. Could that be you? Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM TOMMY, a handsome 7-year-old blue Pit Bull Terrier who has waited much too long for a home. Tommy was rescued from a shelter awhile back and was skin and bones - now he's filled out and is about 75 pounds! While he's tested OK with some dogs, he would do best as the only dog in a home. He's very loyal to his person or people, and once he warms up to you, you will be bonded. He loves to play fetch, go for walks and just hang out and watch TV. We'd love Tommy to find a new home in the new year. Please email for an application.

12/19/24 02:42Doggy Day Out Report: Today I: Went on a walk around downtown Willow Glen! I saw a lot of people and other dogs, and I got compliments on how cute I am. I loved sniffing everything, but I also loved getting cuddles from my walker and hanging out in the park. Three Words to Describe Me are: Affectionate, patient, energeticNotes from My Walker: Marble is a sweetheart! He is still a puppy so he has a lot of energy and is still learning some things (like how to get in and out of a car), and he is pretty good at “sit”. He gets the hang of things quickly. He is super affectionate - he’ll stop and turn to you on walks because he wants to be pet. He got more cuddles every time we took a break.

12/16/24 01:48Doggy Day Out Report:Today I: went to Almaden Lake Park with my friend. I saw a lot of people, other doggy friends in the park! I sniffed a loooooooot of scents! After a long walk, I got a pupcup! It was so much fun!Three Words to Describe Me are: Affectionate, Happy, EnergeticNotes from My Walker: Mister is such a charming young pup here at SJACS! I took him out for a SVPP Shelter Dog Day Out last Wednesday, and we had an absolute blast!I leashed and harnessed him in the side yard at the end of my volunteer shift, just like I usually do. He was super excited and a bit wiggly, but I distracted him with some tasty treats, and he went along with it without any fuss.He was a bit unsure about getting into my car and needed a little boost, but he was happy to accept it. At the park, we saw lots of people walking, jogging, and biking, and he was friendly with everyone we met! He did get a little excited when he saw other dogs, but it was easy to manage—just keeping a bit of distance did the trick. Since he regularly participated in playgroup, I knew he got along well with other dogs; I just wanted to keep him calm during our walk. Although he pulled a bit, he often stopped to sniff around and generally walked well on the leash. He was super eager for treats and had a solid sit! He wasn`t reactive to the geese and ducks in the park. In fact, he got a bit startled when some geese took flight as we walked by!What touched me the most was his affectionate nature. He absolutely loved people! Whenever I stopped and called his name, he`d come running, lean against me, and let me pet him all over. You could really tell he enjoyed the attention!Come meet Mister! I bet you`ll fall in love with this loving and goofy boy right away!

11/22/24 09:20 BCS 6/9 mildly overweight with cruciate tear RPL, appears to be chronic and forming scar tissue. Would do well with rehab but may benefit from surgery if lameness is ongoing. Not noted in shelter until recently so likely ok with controlled leash walks and weight management. * noted to be cat reactive, should go to a home with no catsDDO- October 20thToday I: I went out with a new friend for a hike. I wasn`t very nervous getting my harness on but I was sure ready to get out the door and get on my way. I was able to hop right into the car and we were on our way. We got to the park and I led the pack the whole way. Throughout the walk I got lots of treats for being a good boy. I saw lots of squirrels and dogs and really wanted to go play with them but my friend kept me focused and on the trail. I can`t believe we walked 3 miles today! I was so tired afterwards and got back in the car and fell asleep. My friend surprised me with a trip to Petsmart to get some sniffs in and then we got a pup cup and it was DELICIOUS! I had a great time and can`t wait to go out again. Three Words to Describe Me are: Determined, Curious, GentleNotes from My Walker: Raider was a great dog, super silly. He was very treat motivated and I was able to divert his attention when he was focused on something else. While he was not negatively reactive to other dogs, he was very interested in trying to meet every dog we passed… crying to get over to them. He is a strong guy so knowing your surroundings when walking on a busy path was important. While he doesnt know any commands, we did try to learn to sit… which ended up just getting more treats (I think he knew what he was doing). 3 miles was definitely a lot for Raider, and while we took many breaks, he was definitely tuckered out after our walk and was passed out in the car so shorter walks in the future may be for the best. Raider was super friendly and took treats very gently. He`s a big boy ready for a furever home.

Story
Meet Cricket, the petite white and gray boxer mix. Cricket came into the Shelter as an owner surrender. Cricket lived in a home with a woman and another dog. Her favorite things to do in the previous home are snuggle, play and run. Cricket is currently hanging out in a foster home to take a break from the Shelter and gain some confidence. Her foster reports: “Cricket is a wonderful, sweet dog. She is smart, a quick learner, and human-focused, On leash, she likes to walk in the city or on trails and generally doesn`t pull. She likes to play and have fun, and is able to settle and cuddle by your side. She notices other animals, especially dogs, but doesn`t act aggressively, more it seems like she wants to play. She sleeps well in a crate at night. Overall, she is a delight!”Due to some reported prey drive in her previous home, Cricket is required to go to a home without cats or small animals. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week!
