Story
Dexter is a snuggly goofball. He's happiest with his pack, basking in the sun or lounging in my lap. He loves to explore and takes his time to sniff every plant when on walks. He likes to play tug-o-war, give kisses, & LOVES treats. He hates the rain. He's good with other dogs, especially loves little pups, & to play chase. His besties are a large Burmese doodle & a tiny French bulldog. This said, he will not back down from an aggressive dog. An experienced owner is better. Dex is great with kids, as long as they are dog folks; his zest has knocked one or two over. He loves to give kisses and is very curious. He's scared of balloons and holiday decor. Dex sleeps most of the day. He gets a 45-60 minute walk daily, with 2 or 3 other 20 min potty walks (I don't have a yard). A few times a week we do a longer hike. I got him at 4 mos as a family pup, but after a divorce, stepkids moving out, & a new job, I don't have the time to give him the attention he deserves. He's a sweetie.

Story
HI - I'M DREAM! I'm a 4-year-old blue-and-white Pit Bull Terrier, in need of a foster or forever home. I have been waiting for a couple of years for a home - and keep getting overlooked since I suppose, I'm one of many who need homes right now. I am an easygoing boy - I love people and have done well with other dogs. I was surrendered at the shelter because my previous owners said they could not handle a puppy. Like most pitties, I'm a strong boy and will do well with an experienced owner who wants a loving companion. I love to chase the hose and will bark whenever I see it because I get so excited! I'm definitely a water dog. I'm also very food motivated and I love treats. I weigh about 50 pounds. Can you foster or adopt me? Please email for an application.

HI - I'M MEERA! I am a beautiful & petite 5-year-old blue & white Pit Bull Terrier/Staffie in need of a foster or forever home. I've been waiting quite awhile for my adopter to find me! I weigh only about 45 lbs. I am a loving and cuddly girl and would do great with a single person, a couple, or a family with older kids. I love car rides, and love to go out and about and enjoy the sunshine. I'm not a big fan of other dogs, so will be best as the princess of my own castle, though I have not been leash reactive at my current location. Can you foster or adopt me? Please email for an application.

Meet Griffey!-4 year old male German Pitsky (German Shepherd x Pitbull x Husky!)-Crate trained and house trained in his previous home-Knows a lot of cues such as “sit”, “stay”, “down”, “outside”, “crate”, “wait”, “eat”, “no bark”, “load up”, “heel”, “easy” and “place”. If you are looking for a smart cookie to do positive reinforcement based training with – Griffey is your guy!-Has history of being around cats and was curious with them-Walks well on leash-Has been a good canine citizen with other dogs out in the world and here at the shelter.A dedicated volunteer took Griffey on a trip around town and reports: `He`s clearly experienced in the car, and likes to sit with his head out. I`ve taken him to fairly busy places, yesterday was Seacliff/Rio Del Mar and today was East Cliff/Moran Beach & he was a total rockstar. No issues at all. He has been pretty good and nonschalant about walking past other dogs. He is insanely smart and is very esaily redirected if you call his name.`Now through December 23rd – the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is hosting “Home for the Holidays”. Story
HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON! I'M MARCY! I'm a sweet and lovable 8-year-old female red & white Pit Bull Terrier in need of a new home. There are a few things you should know about me. First, I truly do prefer to be an only dog, though would likely do well with a male pal, as I had one before. But I love people and am very loyal. I also love being petted, rubbed and given lots of affection. Secondly, I was attacked by another dog about a year ago and lost part of my nose, but this does not impact me one bit. I only look a little funny but it doesn't change my lovable personality. I have been waiting a long time for a home because apparently, nobody wants a funny looking dog who would love to be the only dog in the home. So if you can look past my imperfections, I would love to be your companion. I'm still very active and would be happy to go for walks and hikes. Can you foster or adopt me? I am currently looking for a foster or forever home. I weigh 64 lbs. Please email for an application.

Story
Age is only a number. That's exactly how our sweet Senora Amy feels and acts! This sweet and lovely 7-year-young Pittie mix is Amy, another one of our recent euthanasia survivors. Amy luvs to go on walks but what she luvs even more is to just be with her foster pawrents. Our sweet Senora is also a big fan of sunbathing in the backyard, cuddling on the couch (or in bed), and going for car rides! She luvs car rides so much that her foster mom has to pick her up and take her out of the car. Amy has done well with her foster fur sibling thanks to the patience and dedicated work of her foster mom. We think with slow and proper introductions, Amy could coexist with another dog but would also thrive as the only dog in the family and the apple of your eye. Amy is great with her foster human sibling who's starting to crawl around! She Luvs to watch over her human sibling while her foster mom puts her to sleep. Amy can do well in a home with children with proper introductions or are dog experienced. Amy has not been cat-tested.

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Important:   We're a small (but mighty!) volunteer-run organization. To be considered for one of our adoptable animals, you must first submit an   application   at stfrancisanimal.org. Due to the high volume of applications we receive, a volunteer will contact you within 72 hours only if it's a possible match. Stormi was found alone, shivering in the rain under a bush in San Jose at 6 months old in December 2022. She was adopted in January 2023, becoming part of a happy family with a young couple and their large dog. The dogs did well most of the time and loved to play. However, the family’s other dog wasn’t always keen on Stormi, with the resident dog initiating fights. While her family loves her dearly, they made the difficult decision to rehome her for her mental and physical well-being. Stormi is 1.5 years old, about 50 pounds, and still has puppy energy, but is a sweet cuddle bug as well. She loves to play with toys, especially playing tug, but will also happily gnaw on a chew toy. She loves to de-stuffy soft toys (gotta get that squeaker!). She adores adventures and will run her little heart out at the park. She’s a big fan of chasing anything you throw, but she can’t promise she’ll bring them back. (Bonus: That means you get your steps in too!) If given the opportunity, Stormi would likely love and excel at agility courses—she’s smart as a whip and learns quickly. Stormi is a lover and snuggler who always wants to be with you, freely giving kisses at every opportunity. She loves to be on the couch with her humans but will also chill in her doggy bed for naps. Stormi’s mom took her to work several times a week. Stormi loved getting to say hi to all her coworkers. Stormi was so happy to be in the office that she sometimes gave folks sneaky elbow licks or demanded pets and love. She would love to have a backyard, but has made do with a small outdoor courtyard. She will do best if she has free access to an outdoor space to go potty. She can hold it for several hours but has a small bladder and needs to go out frequently. Stormi loves people and warms up quickly, but given her rough start in life, Stormi prefers greeting new people on her terms. She does best when ignored and allowed to sniff, choosing for herself when she wants pets or attention. (We get you, Stormi—personal space is personal space!) Once she’s decided to be friends, Stormi is friends forever. Stormi is crate trained and very food motivated. She’ll do just about anything for a treat. She has some training and can sit, lay down, get in to heel position, load up (into the car), get off, back it up, get out (of a room); she is working on wait, stay, come, on your bed, and heel. Stormi still pulls on leash and needs someone who can work with her on leash manners as well as other skills. Storni loves people and other dogs, and despite the scraps with her dog brother, has been fostered in a home with many resident dogs and numerous doggy visitors as her fosterer runs doggy day care and boarding out of his home. Stormi has been great with all the other dogs and has had no incidents while in foster. She has been great with the resident cat at foster in the house, but when outside is prone to chase cats. Stormi has met older kids and does fine, and for the first 2-3 weeks after being rescued lived in a home with teenagers, but otherwise has not lived with kids. She would likely do fine in a house with older kids. Stormi is healthy, spayed, and up to date on all her shots. She has several scars from the fights she got in with her dog brother. Stormi gets very anxious at the vet, so she takes anti-anxiety medication several hours before a vet visit and wears a muzzle in the clinic. Stormi is an amazing, and beautiful, dog who is a lovebug through and through. She generally has two modes: high energy chaos monster and crashed out cuddle bug who just wants to lay near you. She wears her heart on her sleeve, or rather her face in the form of her heart shaped nose. Stormi is hoping you will take her home and let her love you and be loved furever.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 12, 2024, 12:09 am

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Handsome, calm gentlemanTustin is a 76lb, approx 6 year old American Pitbull Terrier mix. Sweet Tustin was not given the best chances in his life. Tustin is resilient and loyal. He may have been through a lot, but his spirit remains strong. Tustin would thrive in a calm, solo and understanding home with experienced dog handlers who can provide structure without overwhelming him. He will do best in a home without other pets and no small children. Slow introductions with polite humans work best for him. Loud noises and barking dogs are particularly challenging for Tustin. Indoors he likes a mix of mental stimulation, like treat hide-and-seek and quiet background music to relax and nap to after an outing. Despite his quiet outlook, Tustin is an active boy. He needs 3-6 walks daily and likes quiet hikes above the beach, or thru the forest, followed by plenty of rest. Once he trusts someone, he’s very dedicated, and he shows this in subtle ways, like choosing to be close by or resting comfortably. He’s sensitive to his surroundings and appreciates the simple things like a quiet nap, walks and music. One of Tustin’s biggest challenges has been his reactivity to other dogs and some humans. With consistent training and trust building exercises, he’s made a lot of progress but there is more work to do. He’s the best when he is at home; it is his safe spot. We’re proud of how far he’s come, and we know he’ll continue to improve with love and patience. Tustin is on a prescription kidney diet and takes daily medications for his arthritis and incontinence. He takes his medications well and eats his special diet enthusiastically. When Tustin arrived with SVPP he had a tumor that was malignant, but we were able to have it fully excised. He should be protected from sun exposure and kept out of direct sun most of the time. Prior to adoption, all dogs are spayed/neutered, tested for heartworm, vaccinated (including rabies, if age appropriate) and microchipped.   Adoption fees for dogs: http://www.svpetproject.org/info/adoption Stay up-to-date on what our dogs are up to by following us on Facebook!  https://www.facebook.com/svpetprojectVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.December 12, 2024, 12:18 am

She took me on a car ride. I initially had some trouble getting into the car and needed my friend to help me. I enjoyed my car ride that ended with me at Jeffery Fontana Park. I was very happy to see other people and dogs! I was very eager to befriend the dogs at the dog park, but my new friend said exploring the trail was much more fun! I loved sniffing and taking in all the new smells. I was curious and wanted toknow more about what the squirrels were up to. My new friend my patient and was happy to give me breaks during our walk. Wetalked about birds and greeted people while we sat – I loved being stroked and getting scratches. Once we were back at the shelter I was a bit confused and tried to go back with my new friend, but was told that I will meet her again soon.Three Words to Describe Me are: Friendly – Easy - CuriousNotes from My Walker: Doris is a very friendly dog! There was no problem with slipping a harness on her. She needed some help getting inside the car but once in, she sat calmly and seemed to enjoy the ride. At the park she pulled slightly while walking but a stern “No” diverts herattention back to us. She is not highly treat motivated but easy to handle. She is very curious about other dogs especially if they are running/playing.In general, she is not very reactive to other dogs or people while walking. She likes shorter walks with multiple breaks and usually asks for one when needed. She understands “sit” and “common/let’s go”. After our walk, we sat in the shade and she was very goofy – asking for bellyrubs!
