Story
Kay is a lovely girl who has been coming out of her shell and is turning into a social pup. She bonds quickly to humans and likes to stay very close. She doesn’t seem to have any issues with other dogs, and passes them calmly, as long as they don't get too close to her preferred human friend. She is friendly and loving, and will make a great addition to just about any home. Kay is currently in a foster home. If you're interested in her, please email KSwanson@cityofberkeley.info First, we'll set up a virtual meeting with their current foster family via phone, Zoom, or Facetime, to provide you with more detailed information. Then, if you feel that Kay might be a good adoption fit, shelter staff will gladly coordinate an up-close and personal meet and greet with your potential family member. Thank you for your support!

Story
Shampers is a tender-hearted, shy girl who needs just a little time and patience to feel safe with new people. She's naturally curious, though, and with a slow, gentle approach, she’ll start checking you out in no time. Once she realizes you’re a friend, she’ll quietly start following along, often tagging behind her person on walks, as if she's trying to stay in the background while still enjoying your company. Loud noises can make Shampers anxious, but in our playroom, she’s beginning to find her confidence. When it comes to other dogs, Shampers really comes alive. Her playful side emerges when she feels safe, and she thrives in the presence of calm, confident dogs who help her feel secure and bring out her playful, carefree side. She looks to them for reassurance, and their companionship shows her that people and the world around her aren't as intimidating as they might seem. She might be hesitant to ask for attention at first, but once you start petting her, she won’t want you to stop! She’s a young dog, full of potential, and just waiting for the right person to show her that the world isn’t so scary after all. Shampers is currently in a foster home. If you're interested in her, please email KSwanson@cityofberkeley.info First, we'll set up a virtual meeting with their current foster family via phone, Zoom, or Facetime, to provide you with more detailed information. Story
This is Cole, one of our longest residents who really wants a home. It’s no fun for a puppy to grow up in a shelter kennel. Cole is a nice young pup who's looking for a new start. He is a little shy of strangers at first, and may give you a spooky little bark. But if you show him some affection and some treats, he'll be your best friend pretty quickly. He loves lap time in the playroom, even though he's a little big for that! He also loves other dogs and would do well with a companion dog in the home to show him the ropes. Cole can be pretty high energy sometimes, like any respectable young dog, and another dog would also help him get out some of that fun energy. Cole also settles nicely with his human friends. Once he gets the lay of the land, we think Cole will do well in a home – he just needs a chance, and someone to fall in love with him as much as our volunteers have!

Story
Rufus is a young lad with a lot of enthusiasm for life! He is friendly with people right off the bat. He’s also happy to get outside and walk with you. Rufus is very high energy and loves to play with other well-matched dogs (of similar size and energy). He can be pretty bouncy on walks, barking at other dogs because he wants to play with them, but he also likes to keep moving. Rufus enjoys chasing balls but isn’t really sure what to do with them once he catches up to them. He loves human affection and will seek it out from anyone, once he’s out walking around. Rufus is a very good-natured guy who is sure to please just about any family. He’d love to continue his training in his forever home as soon as possible, and he already appears to be housetrained. Come meet this fun guy asap!

Story
Romper is bouncy and love-a-bull. What a wonderful spirit she will be, joining a home. This girl has enthusiasm to spare. She can be a tad reserved and uncertain around new things and people, for about two seconds. After that, she will want to catapult herself into your lap. Romper also loves to play and will give you her belly to rub. She adores human attention. She’s also a nice leash walker and very polite passing other dogs. We suspect Romper would like to play with them, too, given the chance. You really need to meet this girl ASAP. She might just be the love of your life!

Story
Say hi to Cooper, a cuddly young man who is as fun as he is friendly. Cooper loves to meet people and his enthusiasm for friends may only be slightly eclipsed by his enthusiasm for toys. This boy has never met a squeaker he didn’t adore. He also loves time right by your side, or possibly in your lap, soaking up all the love. Cooper has the most earnest-looking face, practically begging you to come love on him as soon as you step in front of his kennel. He’s also nice to walk on leash, enjoying checking out his surroundings and bounding around. Cooper notices other dogs and is very polite passing them. We’re pretty sure he’d like to play, given the chance. He also appears very housetrained. Come meet this sweet boy today before someone else snaps him up!

Cool Beans! AVAILABLE Her name says it all. This 5mos old pup is so very smart, connected and fun. House trained, basic obedience trained and fine to chillax in her kennel during down time. She’s got so much of what we love about American Pit Bull Terriers … Confidence, a zest for life, an eagerness to impress her handlers with calm focus and great eye contact, ie “Tell me what to do and I’ll do it!.” Smaller sized with perfect proportions and the best dorito ears. Beans is currently being schooled by a group of dogs at the Rescue Barn. Check out our Instagram page to see her in action. @badrap_advocacy

Story
Chartreuse came to us via Oakland Animal Services in December of 2024, as he had been picked up as a stray a few times over the course of the year. He is a sweet and fun loving pit mix, who loves everyone he meets. Very friendly and outgoing and gets along with dogs of all sizes. He loves wrestling and playing chase. He also loves cuddling up with you and will nap pretty much anywhere. We believe he was a mostly outdoor dog before being adopted and still is working on his house manners as well as leash walking skills. He is very food motivated and loves getting treats! He honestly is one of the best dogs and deserves a home and a family that has the time to devote to his continued training and dote on him!

Story
I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereThis Dog is Available By Appointment Only Awww, Patti Smith makes our hearts melt. This cutie was frightened when she was found wandering in Oakland but seemed to want to be near people even if she was not so sure about them. With some patience and care, Patti Smith has come out of her shell in her foster home! She is a joy to be around. Her foster family reports that Patti enjoys long naps on the most comfortable surface she can find, has great leash manners (although sometimes there's a squirrel that she just can't resist), and is fully house trained. She has been left alone for up to five hours at a time and peacefully napped the whole time. She also enjoys car rides as long as there's a place for her to curl up and nap. You'll notice a theme here - sleeping is high on Patti's list of favorite activities! One of the cutest things she does is when she's given a new bone - she grunts and struts around the house to show it off before settling down to enjoy it. And when she's feeling herself, she'll roll around on the grass for fun. She is a sweet and mellow companion once she makes friends with people. Patti Smith has shown some nervousness around people she does not know trying to pet her, and will be best in a quiet home. She's about 90 pounds and would blossom even more in a warm, loving furever home (with comfy places to nap)! I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereMeet Sonja, the ultimate couch companion and snuggler. Though she loves lounging around the house, she also makes a great plus-one for all of your social outings. Sonja is a lively girl and is quick to tippy-tap her toes when she's excited, especially about her favorite foods like cream cheese, peanut butter or tuna. She is a great dance partner, and when it comes to dinner time or treating, she will impress you with her lady-like "sit" command. She can't resist soaking up the sun, and may even try to trick you into letting her out for a sunbathing session. Sonja is a very social and friendly dog who loves being surrounded by humans. She is well trained, housetrained, and is perfectly comfortable in a crate. She knows basic commands such as "sit," "down," and "stay." and is a polite and well-behaved house guest. She prefers to sleep on a bed with her humans, but is also content in a crate. She has met a wide variety of people of all ages and has done well with everyone. She would do best in a home with a well-fenced, sunny yard as she can get a little worked up around other animals. Ideal for Sonja to be an only pet in the home. She is well-behaved on a leash and enjoys shorter hikes, but tuckers out around 2 miles. Sonja is about 8 years old and 55 pounds. She is in a foster home, and you can reach out at sonja@jeffvier.com or see more of her (and message her) @sonjadog_oas on Instagram! Story
I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereGet ready to indulge in the most delectable delight of them all – Cheesecake! This sweet pup is the life of the party, and once she's off leash in the yard, she's off like a sprinter at the starting line, ready to have a blast. She craves attention and pets, making her the star of any gathering. But she also comes when called, with so much enthusiasm! Cheesecake's sweetness doesn't stop there. She's the belly rub connoisseur, rolling over for a little dose of love and affection. She takes treats with grace and is an expert at "sit" and "down." Cheesecake does have a little secret – she's sensitive about her head, so a gentle approach is key. And she has a unique little head tilt, likely a memento from a past adventure or injury, possibly. We don't know her past but we know nothing can keep this sweetheart down – she's as happy as can be, ready for all the fun life has to offer. And when it comes to building her confidence, positive reinforcement obedience training is the name of the game.  Cheesecake is all about toys and, of course, soaking up that precious human attention. She's the ultimate 4 year old party animal! As for her canine companions, Cheesecake met a few at the shelter, but she's mostly looking for some one-on-one attention with her forever family. She was mostly uncomfortable meeting other dogs at the shelter and that's OK! We know the shelter can be stressful. So for now, we recommend that she be the only dog in the home. If you're ready to bring a slice of sweetness into your life and share it with Cheesecake, you're in for a treat like no other. This lovely girl is as friendly as they come and absolutely adores attention and affection from her human companions. One of Agatha's favorite pastimes is posing for photos, effortlessly showcasing her adorable features and winning smile. She's also a pro at following commands, coming when called and sitting on cue, proving just how intelligent and eager to please she truly is. At six years young, Agatha is beyond the puppy antics phase, embodying the perfect blend of maturity and playfulness. Weighing in at a petite 44 lbs, she's the ideal size for cuddles and companionship. Kimbo is an extra-large bully mix, with a personality as big as his (almost) 120-pound frame. His impressive size and occasional stubborn streak can present a challenge, but his laid-back nature and affectionate personality make him well worth it. Though he walks well on a leash, Kimbo is still getting used to it and will need continued guidance to perfect his leash skills. He’s a master at claiming the comfiest spot in the house, and once settled, he’ll be the most relaxed and loyal buddy. With a little patience, Kimbo will quickly become a steadfast friend, offering his big heart and calm presence to win over anyone who meets him. He’s seeking a home that appreciates his unique qualities and is ready to give him all the love—and couch space—he deserves.

Story
This is Lupe, who looks more like a tiger than a wolf! She has the most beautiful markings and is a very sweet girl. She’s pretty shy of humans at first, but absolutely adores other dogs, especially males. We are not sure of her history, but she definitely has had some puppies, so may have been bred for her looks, while not getting much human attention herself. That’s about to change for the better for Lupe! When playing with other dogs, she really opens up and starts to get comfortable, not just with the dogs, but also with the human friends around. Lupe doesn’t have much experience walking on a leash yet, but she’s working on it. She’s making up for lost time, and will make a very loyal and loving companion to the special adopter who’s willing to put in the effort to help her feel safe in the world. Might that be you? She’s waiting for you to help her make her new start.
