Story
Meet Callie! This little cutie is a year old now and has been in our care most of her life. She was born with excess fluid or “water on the brain” that caused blindness and was given to a family who was not equipped to care for her. They grew frustrated with her and didn't understand her behaviors or take her to the vet for further diagnosis. Callie was more subdued than most puppies and showed some neurological signs, like circling, and had significantly limited vision, consistent with a condition called hydrocephalus. We took her to a neurologist and she was started on a medication that helps control symptoms of the condition and it has worked incredibly well. We can’t change the fact that she’s blind, but otherwise, she is symptom-free. Dogs with mild or moderate cases like Callie can live a healthy, happy full life. She’s had no seizures on the meds, no longer walks in circles, and lives a very normal life. Callie has matured to be a self-sufficient, confident, loving pup, and while she can’t see, that’s all she’s ever known so she rolls with it.  Callie has adapted quickly to home life. She’s a very smart, sweet dog who makes a wonderful companion She’s being fostered by Leah and Chris and has been living with their pack of 3 pups, both large and small. Callie has been good with every pup we’ve introduced her to and finds comfort in her dog business.  We checked in with her foster mom, Leah, for a quick update.  “Callie is very confident once she gets her bearings straight. She learned the layout of our home pretty quickly. She will explore to learn where everything is - especially the kitchen! The only times I've seen her be hesitant is when she is outdoors in a new spot for the first time - all of the smells and noises can be a little intimidating. As with most blind dogs, her other senses are very strong.  She can smell peanut butter in another room! She integrated into our home very quickly. She found the toys - she likes tuggy ones, Nylabones, and the stuffed toys that make the crinkle sounds - but her absolute favorite toys were my slippers. They had little pouf balls on them and she enjoyed ripping the balls off (which was totally okay they were cheapies off Amazon). She may have a foot fetish... hehe. She tries to play with my dogs but mine are Mean Golden Girls so not much luck there..She’s a very playful, fun dog and would have loved a canine playmate in her new home.  She’s also very snuggly and likes to cuddle on the couch with you and gives lots of kisses. We taught her to "walk" on a leash outside the home, but she needs treats to make her move along. She loves to explore the backyard which is familiar terrain. She’s really good about peeing outside and now she’s pooping outside too. She learned to go up steps quickly and we have trained to use our 4 front steps into the house and then the doggie steps to the couch. I think she can see some shadows. Honestly, you sometimes forget she's blind because she doesn't act all that impaired. She is a really happy-go-lucky dog with lots of energy and love to give. We need someone special to take this sweet little nugget. She's one smart cookie" Apply today to learn more! Story
Meet Tessa. This cutie was rescued from a hoarding situation, living among many other dogs unspayed and unprotected. She was pregnant when she came into the rescue and gave birth to two adorable puppies. She did a great job as a mom caring for them and was receptive to the humans who helped care for her family while nursing. Tessa is a very sweet, nurturing soul. Her puppies have found their forever homes, so now it’s Tessa’s turn. She has been fully vetted and spayed and is ready to start her new life. Tessa did not get a lot of socialization in her prior home, so she can be fearful in new situations and needs time to adapt to a new environment. She does warm up after getting her bearings and LOVES her humans. She is being fostered by a foster mom, dad, and two laidback dogs and does well as part of a pack. She’s very accepting and submissive with other dogs and has a live-and-let-live attitude. Tessa's crate-trained and housetrained, and her foster mom trusts her to be free in the home. She also has good leash skills, and once she settles in, she enjoys strolling around the neighborhood. ****** We checked in with her foster mom for a quick update: “At first, Tessa was fearful and stayed to herself. As she got to know us, her sweet, fun personality emerged. She is pretty laid-back but does get a small burst of energy and playfulness. After a few days, she started following me around and wanted to stay close by my side. After about a week, she started to branch out more to explore and lay on the couch with my two pups when I was in the kitchen…She has evolved and is very comfortable now. She is such a sweet dog and just wants belly rubs and a low-key environment. She loves to be petted and snuggled, and she also enjoys exploring the backyard. She’s probably not the best fit for a home with lots of kids or traffic coming in and out. She is still nervous when strangers come over, but for the most part, she ignores them. She’s not barking or bothered by them but would rather avoid. She gets so excited to see us when we get home now and has started playing with toys…I love to see her joy! I think she would do best with another laidback dog in the home to pal around with. She does stay close to my pack. They don't play a lot, but she finds comfort in having them there. I’m sure she would be fine with cats, she doesn’t have a mean bone in her. Older kids would be fine too, as long as they give her lots of belly rubs.” ****** Overall, Tessa is a chill, easygoing pup who needs a similar home environment. She would be great as part of a laidback pack and needs a family who will give her time to settle in and expose her to new things as she’s ready. Story
Meet Bunny. This adorable little Chi with the radar-like ears was found hiding under an old trailer near a cow pasture in Cleveland County, NC. She was emaciated and scared, but her finder was able to gain her trust and coax her out with some food. Bunny was likely abandoned in the area and exhausted from fending for herself. Thankfully, this kind-hearted person took action to ensure Bunny was safe and then contacted our rescue to help find her a great home. While Bunny was a few pounds underweight on intake, she was a wonderful patient at the vet and had no trust issues being handled. We are happy to report that she’s a healthy pup with excellent social skills. She has a sweet, affectionate nature and loves to snuggle and give kisses. She has slept in her foster mom’s bed every night and offers hugs when she wakes up. &#226&#157&#164&#239&#184&#143 Bunny does not have a mean bone in her body. If she feels threatened, she just lies flat and is very submissive. Bunny is a bit shy at first and more of a follower, but once she has a few minutes to warm up, she’s very friendly and engaging. She loves every human she meets and is good with kids too. She's a gentle pup who is not nippy and considers kids to be more playmates in her life. She also really enjoys the company of other dogs and would love to have a dog buddy in her new home. She loves to play and do zoomies in the backyard — the yard is her kingdom, and she is the queen. Ruthann describes Bunny as an active dog who likes to play and go on walks, but when she is tired, she just wants to be in your lap. She’s almost fully potty trained, and Ruthann keeps her gated in the laundry room when she’s not home. She cries a little when left alone but does settle down and is never destructive. She also has pretty good leash skills. She does not pull and will sit on command. She knows her name and will come when called. Good girl, Bunny!  Like most dogs, Bunny will protective bark if she hears loud sounds or someone comes to the door. but she’s not afraid of noises in general and does well greeting visitors. She also enjoys rides in the car and getting out and about, and is the dog who is ready-made to be your travel buddy and sidekick. Bunny will be coming to town on 11/9, ready to start her new life.
