Story
Mardi!
This adorable and sweet 3-4 yr old squishy american bulldog/boxer type mix is Mardi.
Mardi has quite the story that her foster mom will try to share here. Mardi is too humble to tell it herself, and we also don't want to live in the past, however we think it is important for people to know to help understand how incredibly special, resilient and forgiving Mardi is.
Mardi first came to our rescue in Feb 2024, when she ended up at a local shelter as a suspected cruelty/neglect case. She had significant infected, deep bite wounds on her neck and face, was underweight and in terrible condition. She was also snuggly and loving with a (broken) tail that wagged every time you gave her a kind word or a soft touch. Since that time she has healed physically and unless you look closely for any of the remaining scars you wouldn't know. Mardi was adopted from us about a month ago but recently returned due to some pretty unrealistic expectations her adopter had.
Mardi is a one dog home kind of girl. She does not want to live with other dogs, or cats. She thinks she is all you need, and she is probably right. She will make sure if you need dog hugs, kisses or someone to pet she will be right there. Sometimes she knows it before you do. Although Mardi has done ok in public settings where other dogs are (ie at a brewery) she sometimes needs to be reminded to mind her manners and be distracted, and she does not want to interact with other dogs. Her foster mom has found her easy to manage in public settings, but would also recommend something like a reactive dog class might help an adopter learn to interrupt any barking.
Mardi absolutely loves any person she has met while in our care. She is great with kids, and has been around kids 4+, although she may accidentally knock over very small ones with her love and the way she leans in to you. Although her foster mom loves Mardi very much and has only the best things to say, she does have other dogs and as such feels bad that Mardi does not get as much time and attention as she deserves, She deserves to be the center of someone's universe.
Mardi is good on a leash and mostly just wants to stick near her people, but she also says she enjoys her foster mom's fully fenced in yard. She likes to hang out nearby (we often read together outside on nice days) and will gently nudge your hand with her nose so you know she is nearby, but she is also happy to go sniff and adventure in the yard and keep herself occupied. Although she thinks she can catch the bold bunnies in the yard (so far, no luck thankfully) she is a master of catching, and eating, bugs. She is just a happy girl who occupies herself.
Mardi is low to medium energy and happy to hang out and be quiet when you are working, but also very happy to be invited on any adventures. She loves car rides, although I would suggest tethering her as she will try to steal your Starbucks when you aren't looking. Live and learn, foster mom.
She is crate trained and housebroken and just a really nice, easy dog. We would recommend crating her when not supervised as she will counter surf looking for any goodies. It is a good incentive to keep a really clean kitchen and bare counters! She knows sit and we are working on down and wait.
Mardi is fully up to date on vet care. She is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She is up to date on preventatives and wellness.
