You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.*Lewistown, PA* Deitz is an Old American bulldog mix who is true to his breed. He was born in 2013. When he is not playing hard, he just wants to cuddle and warning... he thinks he is a lap dog. He enjoys chewing on bones, deer antlers, and playing with squeaky toys. A fenced yard would be ideal for his energy. If no fence, daily exercise would be a must for him. He rides great in the car and would be a great dog for hikes and long walks. Don't let his age full you.. this boy still has lots of energy and love to share. He would do best in a calmer home without a lot of people in and out. He does good with medium to large dogs, small dogs we would not recommend. He is not good with cats. Older/considerate kids would be best for him to play with since he is a solid boy. He seems to do best with women and is slow to warm up to men, but once he trusts you, you’re golden. He came to ODAAT after his human Mom passed away in their home. Deitz stayed by her side for days until they were found by family and sadly the family was unable to keep him. Understandably so, he will be protective of your family. Blue—14+ Kids (People Selective), Dog by DogBowser was excited to get out of the kennel. Once leashed he jumped on the handler then tried to pull to go outside. He`s a tank on a leash and cared more about sniffing the environment then listening to the handler—you can capture his attention though and he will redirect his focus. He stopped eating to see why we were petting him, and he ate faster when we tried to take the food bowl. No other guarding warnings presented. Dog interaction was a little forward and rude to start but would appease at the opposing dog’s request. He would try to initiate play again with or without a correction from the dog. Did well with both sexes. He greets to investigate person, if he’s unsure he backs up with a quick wagging tail, low growl, and deep quick warning barks; gains space and keeps person in front of him. Bowser needs a slow introduction and treat/retreat game to warm up to people. Yellow/Blue—12+ Kid by Kid, Dog by DogJoch was nervous at first about getting out of his kennel. He just sat and pushed the handler‘s hand out of the way. The sound inside was too much. He shut down. Getting him out from the outside was much more accessible. He gave up his side, allowed the leash to be attached, and then wanted to bolt. He can pull on a leash when he wants something. Joch is fearful/nervous when greeting new people, but once he investigates you, he loosens up. Once you start to rub him, He doesn’t want you to stop. He likes to body rub you for more attention. Joch has a few tender spots from fleas and other handling issues. He showed interest in a giant tennis ball and a rope but wasn’t sure how to play with it. He is reserved with new objects. He needs to be coaxed to check things out that startle him. Joch showed no offensive behavior with resource guarding. He stiffened and lip-curled slightly, looked away from you, and did a little body blocking, putting himself between you and his food bowl. We introduced him to be a neutral dog, and he was over-aroused with excitement and clawed at the floor to get to the dog, which is a rude approach. He could be redirected, but only for a few seconds. Then, he would return to being pushy and trying to get his smells and licks in. The neutral dog gave him two corrections, and he immediately stopped what he was doing for about 10 seconds and returned to the previous behavior. Age: 3 years Size: 40 lbs Estimated breed: Bulldog/Pit bull mix We received an urgent plea from the shelter about Emi, a sweet girl who was set to be euthanized due to her medical needs and the shelter lacking the resources to properly care for her. We couldn't bear the thought of letting this beautiful soul face death simply because of her disability, so we jumped into action and welcomed her to Nirvana! Please meet Emi, whose name means "beautiful blessing" in Japanese - a perfect name for a dog who deserves all the blessings in the world. She came into a rural shelter as a stray without the use of her hind legs, dragging herself around on the cold street. Despite this, she maintained a sweet and gentle demeanor, allowing shelter staff and the vet to examine and handle her. Upon arrival in PA to foster care, we discovered she was suffering from a skin infection around her hind end, likely caused by sitting in her own waste for prolonged periods of time. She's been treated with antibiotics and is feeling so much better and clean in foster care! Emi has already shown improvement in the brief time she's been in our care. She's able to drag herself around quite well and gets her own version of the zoomies, or "scooties," when excited! Her x-rays show extra bone grown in her spinal vertebrae, likely caused in the healing process to some sort of trauma which we assume caused her paralysis. She will see a vet neurologist in the coming weeks to determine a treatment plan and assess if her paralysis is permanent. Please view our Facebook or Instagram pages for further updates on Emi!
