Story
COMET is a typical sweet, smart, young (1 to 3 years old), ~90 lbs malamute/husky who entered a local rural shelter during the 4th of July overflow where he was undoubtedly very scared. He is housetrained, he rides well in a car or truck, does not counter surf or get into trash, and stays off of furniture and bed unless invited. He is well mannered. He waits patiently for his food. COMET walks great on a leash and seems to know about heel speed. COMET loves to talk and loves the snow and mountains. Comet wants to play but recently after another dog attacked him and injured his face and paw (requiring a drain and stitches) he is reserved and dog-selective. At this time, he does not appear to enjoy the company of all dogs (this may resolve itself given a little time), but for now, he should be the only dog. Comet wants to play but recently after another dog attacked him and injured his face and paw (requiring a drain and stitches) he is reserved and dog-selective." He has been in play groups with other dogs in boarding since the description that was written shortly after the attack. Additional Behavior Details Gets Along with Dogs Unsure Gets Along with Cats Unsure Gets Along with Kids Unsure Housetrained Yes Needs Experienced Adopter? While it says unsure regarding getting along with dogs it was believed it was mainly due to the attack, prior to the attack he was getting along with dogs, and currently he is in play groups with other dogs. Erroring on the side of caution it will be left as unsure until formally tested. He did not chase cats on walks and ignored them he was more focused on the walk. Meet Melvin! Melvin recently joined our rescue and is currently staying at Windswept Kennels, waiting for a foster or forever home! Rescued from a farm in Wendell, ID, Melvin is one of nine puppies. On January 5, 2024, six of the puppies were trapped, including Melvin, Blackie, Bright Eyes, Larry, Glenda, and Bliss. Their mother is an all-white husky, and their father is unknown, possibly a German Shepherd. Adoption fees cover spay/neuter, microchip, rabies vaccine, current vaccinations, and a starter kit of supplies (when available). About Shepskies (Shepherd-Husky Mix) Shepskies combine the best traits of German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies, making them loving, intelligent, and protective companions. Family Dogs: They’re gentle and protective, great for families with proper training. Always supervise interactions with young children. Training Needs: These working dogs are loyal but can be stubborn. A firm, consistent leader helps them thrive. Size: Typically 20–25 inches tall and 45–88 pounds. Personality & Care Shepskies are active, playful, and full of energy. They thrive with regular long walks, hikes, and engaging play sessions. Without sufficient activity or companionship, they may develop separation anxiety or destructive behaviors. Socialization: Early exposure to other pets and people is key. Huskies can have a strong prey drive, so supervision around small animals is important. Grooming: Brush regularly, clean eyes and ears as needed, and trim nails monthly. Watch for signs of infection, like redness or odor in the ears. Shepskies are vocal, especially when bored or left alone for long periods.
