Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Susanna! This 5-year-old Xoloitzcuintli/Cairn Terrier mix is a sweet and shy girl looking for a loving home. Susanna is leash trained, enjoys car rides, and loves playing with her toys. She's even-tempered but a little timid, so she'll need a patient person and potentially a confident companion dog to help her feel secure. She's also good with cats. Given her mostly hairless coat, she'll need some cozy sweaters to stay warm, especially in chilly Minnesota. One of her favorite things? Breakfast! If you're looking for a cute, calm companion who will thrive with a bit of TLC, Susanna might just be the perfect addition to your home. Watch this cute video of Susanna! Or this one, where you can see her happy tail wiggles! Susanna  is from Texas.  One big thing you should know is they are heartworm positive - but please don’t let that scare you away from adopting them! After they undergo treatment for their condition they will be completely healthy again, and heartworm is not a contagious disease. Because they need treatment, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) program.   Click here   to learn more about this program. They will get heartworm treatment at one of Ruff Start’s partner veterinary clinics in St. Cloud, so their foster will need to be comfortable getting them to and from the appointments. Treatment will consist of three injections: the first will be roughly 30 days after they enter rescue. Then, the second and third injections will happen 30 days after the first. When they are undergoing treatment, they should be on activity ‘restrictions’ which just means they should relax in their crate or cuddle with you.     Click here   to learn more about heartworm disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes.   If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an   adoption application.   An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our   How to Adopt page. If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can     donate     to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals. Story
CLEO | 7 years old | 10-pounds*Alright, STOP. Collaborate and listen…She cute but she is expensive.Cleo will need prescription food and medication for the remainder of her life. Still interested? Read on!—--Straight from her foster’s mouth to your ears.. erhmm.. eyes.. learn more about Cleo directly from the source! They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend.. And you better have a lot of them. To sell. To pay for her vet care.Haha! Just kidding! *looks around* Kind of..Cleo has a condition called protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) caused by irritable bowel disease. She loses proteins from her bloodstream into her GI tract faster than her body can replenish them and her medical management helps regulate this condition.Cleo’s daily life is unaffected by this and she does your everyday dog things. The only addition is giving her medication (pills) with her morning and evening meals which she takes without problem.Still interested? Then you’re ready to hear our secret..—--Cleo is a GEM. A truly one-of-a-kind companion. So without further ado, here’s what you need to know about Cleo!Extremely smart. Eats her own poop. In a glass-half-full kind of world, you could consider her a self-poop picker-upper. (But really, you are going to have to go out in those subzero temps and pick up her poop before she does.)In all seriousness, she is one of the best potty-trained dogs we have ever had. And she understands cues so quickly. She even knows sit, shake, high five, and can catch her food mid-air!Farts can clear a room. They just get stronger. Rootin’ Tootin’ Cleo should be in the Guinness Book of Records or something.Teeters on being the fun police. Still fun.Cleo coexists with dogs big and small but can sometimes be a playtime hall monitor. That said, if she finds the right dog with the right playstyle, she has a good time playing chase and wrestling!Loves tug o’ war. Hates fetch. If you throw her toy, she’s going to look at you like what are you even doing. On a scale of one to barky, she’s about a five. While Cleo doesn’t bark all day long, she is going to warn you about car doors slamming, people talking, the general goings on of the world. And her bark be loud so shared walls may not be the best fit for her. She stops with some guidance pretty quickly.. usually.. sometimes..Loves food. Hates sharing. Cleo’s favorite times of the day are, hands down, breakfast and dinner. And she’s got that only child syndrome (I can say that, I’m an only child) where everything is hers. Her food. Her toys. Your food. All hers. And she will tell anyone who needs to know.Cleo doesn’t currently live with cats but has in the past and takes it in stride. As long as she’s the center of attention, that’s all she really needs.Supposedly a Chihuahua/Pug mix. Definitely just as needy. Pug parents, am I right? Cleo will climb on your lap, push her way to your hands, and really doesn’t care if she’s stepping on another dog to get to the top. We mean that figuratively. Well.. except for those times when she’s literally walking over a dog to get to you.Likes to give kisses. Licks everything. Literally everything.. the couch, the floor, the carpet, the coffee table, your clothes, and your face.Cleo is great with kids of all ages but it’s probably best that she live in a home with teens or no kids on account of how much she loves food. Because she has PLE, Cleo needs to be on a restricted diet and can’t be catching scraps or snagging food from those little hands. Because she would. She totally would. This girl’s personality is a great balance of play and chill, and she walks so well on a leash.. when it’s actually warm out.. A lap dog through and through, Cleo wants to be snuggled in with you, often under a blanket (Chihuahua parents, you get it). She's content to snooze on the couch or a dog bed when you're gone and she can fit into any social situation.Cleo is one of the best dogs out there and whoever has the privilege of adopting her is going to know love (and toots) beyond measure!—--*Opening Line Credit: Vanilla Ice - “Ice Ice Baby”Cleo came to Pet Haven Rescue with a severe case of PLE. Her levels are back to normal with the help of food and medication management.More on protein-losing enteropathy (PLE): https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/proteinlosing-enteropathy-ple-in-dogs—--If you are interested in this dog, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling: https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $250. Story
Toby, affectionately nicknamed Cartoon Dog and Little Buddy, is a sweet, affectionate, and playful pup who’s ready to find his forever home. Although he came to his foster family a little shy, Toby has blossomed into a happy-go-lucky dog who loves cuddling, playing, and following his people around.Toby gets along famously with everyone—big and small dogs, cats, and even kids! He’s currently fostered with a mix of pets and does great. That said, because he’s still a puppy at heart, he can get playful and may occasionally try to play bite, so children in the home should know how to interact gently with him.Toby loves plush toys, belly rubs, and snuggling up with his foster humans. He’s crate-trained and feels comfortable in his crate, making it a great tool for his continued house-training journey (he’s about 75% there!). He has medium energy—he enjoys running in the yard but is also happy to chill and relax indoors.Toby would love a home where he can continue to thrive with lots of love, snuggles, and a bit of structured playtime. While he doesn’t need a fenced yard, he’d enjoy a space to run and explore. He’s not vocal except for the occasional bark when excited or wanting attention (classic beagle charm!), and while he loves being around people, he doesn’t require someone to be home 24/7.If you’re looking for a small, sweet, and affectionate companion who loves to play and cuddle in equal measure, Toby is the dog for you. He’s guaranteed to bring joy, laughter, and endless love into your life. Are you ready to meet him? Story
Stella is a 2-year-old Beagle/Chihuahua mix who is the perfect combination of sweet and spunky. Her sense of humor shines when she chomps loudly on her food, lets out dramatic sighs, or meanders down the sidewalk in anything but a straight line. She’s a big dog in a little body, always curious and eager to sniff whatever you’re eating, just to let you know she’s paying attention. When she’s not playing fetch or stealing socks, Stella can often be found gazing out the window, keeping tabs on the world around her.Though shy and anxious when she first arrived in her foster home, Stella quickly blossomed into a cuddlebug extraordinaire. She thrives on affection, and her favorite activities include snuggling up with her people, belly rubs, and playtime. Stella loves to show off her playful personality—when she's excited, she'll carry a toy around proudly or even entertain herself by tossing it and fetching it on her own! Stella is house-trained and can use pee pads if necessary, and while she isn’t a fan of going into her crate, she settles quietly and comfortably once inside. This sweet pup is content with a short daily walk and enjoys quiet moments indoors just as much as outdoor adventures. While she’s nervous about car rides and barks briefly at noises outside, she calms down quickly and doesn’t bark excessively. Stella does not require a fenced yard, as long as she gets some time outdoors to explore and sniff around. In her previous home, Stella lived with kids, dogs and cats, so we have no doubts she is a perfect family dog. While she's been in her foster home, she has just been more reserved when meeting new people and animals, so she may need a little time to warm up to them. She might need a few meetings to feel fully comfortable with strangers. If you’re looking for a fun-loving, affectionate dog with a touch of silliness, Stella is your perfect match! If you are interested in this dog, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling - https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $450.
