Story

Help first found Jethro when he was brought to Oklahoma for a chance at a new life. Not used to staying put, he took off the next day and was lost for 3 months. After that, he ended up in a high-kill shelter. Facing the possibility of euthanasia, his path forward seemed uncertain- until the helpers stepped in. Space was limited, time was running out, and when shelter staff asked the community to help find the people responsible for him, it worked! His family was found, but when it became clear that Jethro needed urgent medical care, they made a scary choice- they left him there. It was a long shot, but a well intentioned one. They hoped by leaving him at the shelter, he would be seen and cared for by someone with resources beyond their own. From there, his circle of helpers grew: shelter staff reached out to rescue, volunteers answered the call, vets and fosters joined his team, rescue supporters mobilized, alumni shared his story, and a single Facebook post brought tens of thousands more into his journey. With each new helper, Jethro continues to receive more of the resources and support he needs not only to heal, but to grow and thrive. Much of Jethro's past is a mystery, and we don't know what exactly he's been through or the full extent of his needs just yet. This guy has spent a long time in survival mode. He has gone without in countless ways and has shown more bravery and resilience than anyone should ever have to. He arrived emaciated and exhausted and it will be an extensive and expensive effort to get him physically ready for his new life- though emotionally and mentally he's been ready for a long time. The difference now is that he is no longer alone- he is surrounded by those who see the need and respond. Now Jethro needs one final helper. Someone who can give him a life SO full of love and abundance that he never has to be brave, resilient, or go without ever again. A helper ready to provide a life so soft and steady that the days he spent surviving fade into the background and all that remains is the certainty that once someone showed up for him, people kept showing up and never stopped. Okay… I’ll admit it—I sometimes bark like a baby seal when I first go in , but don’t worry, I calm down quickly and then it’s snooze time. His name is Gibson- but you can call him Gibby. Good Guy Gibby is a stunning coonhound with an extraordinary story that somehow keeps circling back to Helpless Hounds. He’s total character- He does well with dogs, is social with strangers, totally adores teens, but considers cats and chickens just too delicious to be friends with. He's smart, crate trained, house trained, eager to learn, and bonds easily with the people around him- but that's not all! What makes Gibby *especially* special is how connected he is to our rescue. This tale began nearly 2 years ago when Gibby was spotted running loose with his girlfriend, Goldie, but the duo disappeared before they could be rescued and relocated. When he eventually ended up at a local shelter as a stray, Helpless Hounds officially became part of his story. Soon after joining our program, the plot thickened- his girlfriend turned up! With puppies! A DNA test confirmed that Gibby is 51.5% Bluetick, 48.5% Treeing Walker Coonhound, and the proud father of ten puppies. Goldie and the puppies she arrived with are now Helpless Hounds alumni- with one pup infamously becoming a foster fail with our founder. All these twists and turns lead to one simple truth: Adopting Gibby doesn't just mean getting a dog- it means becoming part of a full fledged Helpless Hounds family tree. But of course, the tale continues: After 7 months in which he experienced everything from roaming to rescue, reunion to rejection, Gibby was thrilled to finally find a friend! We all hoped this was his happy ending, but unfortunately that chapter closed sooner than anyone anticipated. Now he has returned for Act 2: the part where our hero finally finds the redemption he deserves. Gibby dreams of a family of his very own- people who will meet his curiosity and energy with fun and engagement, but more importantly someone who sees him and is certain. His perfect place has room to run, tons of treats, spots to sniff, and a truckload of toys. When his adventures are all done, he's happy to crash on the couch and reap the rewards of being the best boy. Duke arrived at Helpless Hounds on 7-12-25. Before then, he had lived on the streets of Paul's Valley, OK for his whole life. He was 1st seen in the area about 7 years ago, and over the years several people kept him fed, and checked on him, but he had never had a home or even set foot inside a house before. Now, we are happy to report that Duke is a big-hearted dog with a love for walks and nap time! This handsome guy does well with most other dogs in the home, and he has allllll the love to give to his people!!
