Story
Meet Rachel! This sweet, shy girl joined Miri's from a puppy mill where she was kept in a metal cage for her whole life. Rachel isn't used to receiving love and care from humans so she's looking for a family that will be patient with her as she adjusts to her new life. She's decompressing and learning to trust her foster parents, but she is THRILLED to be out of her cage and celebrates each day with the most joyful morning zoomies you will ever see. Rachel is learning that humans can be kind. She's taking it slow getting to know her foster family but already loves sleeping in her own bed in her foster mom's room. She likes being near her new people, but not too near -- yet! Rachel gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home and is fine with the cats there too. She walks well on the leash, loves wandering around the fenced in yard, enjoys car rides, and is fine left home on her own for a little while. Rachel is hard at work on potty training but for now is doing well with a belly band, and would do great in a home that can provide her with a consistent daily routine. Can you give Rachel the love and kindness she's missed out on her whole life? Rachel is approx 7 years old and 8 lbs. Fostered in Winchester, VA Please apply at MirisHaven.org

Story
Meet Sandy, aka Sandwich! This funny and curious girl is full of personality and love. Sandy loves walks, FOOD, literally any human, car rides, FOOD, naps, being pet nonstop, FOOD again, and a cozy dog bed. She also loves snack puzzles and chews. Sandy sleeps through the night on her own and is completely housebroken. She came to us overweight so she's on a mission to shed a few pounds and build up her strength. Her new family will need to help her keep exercising and losing weight, and then maintain her progress once she's in a good place. Did we mention that Sandy is also absolutely hilarious? If you're looking for constant entertainment, you've found your girl. She has the best and funniest facial expressions and is constantly cocking her head to the side when she's trying to understand something. She also sleeps on her foster family's shoes despite an abundance of beds - unclear if it's a strategic move so she knows when they leave since she's hard of hearing, but she snuggles right into the shoe pile for a good snooze. And this is only cracking the surface of her antics! Sandy absolutely loves her people and will be happiest in a home with humans who are home most or all of the time to snuggle with her. She gets worried easily so will do best in a quiet and calm environment with people who are gentle and kind and help build up her confidence, especially in new places. She's great with older children but would like a home without younger ones. She loves being outside and going for walks, as well as riding in her stroller for longer outings. Sandy's vision is solid though she has some trouble hearing. She takes medication regularly for her slightly enlarged heart and suspected tracheal collapse, but nothing slows her down - she recently broke the sound barrier while sprinting for a bag of chips her foster mom had dropped. Sandy has hip dysplasia so she needs to be kept off of elevated surfaces and carried up and down stairs. She's had some swimming sessions to help with her hip and absolutely loves them. And while Sandy's not a fan of crowded places, she’s totally unbothered by dogs (as long as they respect her personal space) - though she did show some enthusiasm about chasing a pigeon! Sandy Sandwich has a big heart (literally and emotionally), phenomenal sense of humor, and serious love of snacks and snuggles. If you’ve got a cozy spot on the couch and a soft spot for saucy little seniors, she might just be your soulmate. Sandy is approximately 13 years old and 19 lbs. Fostered in Baltimore, MD Please apply at MirisHaven.org

Good with Dogs , Is Not Good with Kids , Good with Adults , Somewhat vocal , Does Good in the Car , Requires a yard , Leash-trained , Crate-trained , Likes to play with toys , Likes to be in your lap , Playful , Affectionate , Eager To Please , Intelligent   We estimate Newton almost three years old.  He is 25 pounds, neutered, up-to-date in vaccinations.  We do not know much about his past before he was picked up as a stray dog by Baltimore County shelter.  He was extremely and painfully matted, not neutered, and had an amical hernia.  It was necessary to shave his matting off under sedation so this was done when he was neutered and had his amical hernia repaired.  In the shelter he was very scared and still had not forgotten the pain he suffered from his matted coat.  His coat requires regular grooming to prevent getting matted again.  He was extremely fearful of grooming but with a gentle hand he is fine now.  We have been working with him in his foster home and he is getting better.  He will require a family that understands his past trauma and has experience with dogs to help him fully recover.  Newton would like to have a home with a yard where he can spend some time running around.    Newton would not do well in apartment/Condo life.  He needs to have a house with a yard. He seems to be energetic and active and a bit mouthy so he would not do well with young children. Newton is an active, happy, playful dog that gets along well with his new foster brothers.  He is an amazingly affectionate dog. He seems to want to and will climb into your lap to be close to you.  He like to be in touch with his people either on the lap, next to and touching on the couch, and very close in bed at night with his warm body. We had an animal communicator do a reading on Newton.  What we think from this encounter that Newton is missing his family.  We think something happened to his owner and a caregiver may have let Newton go astray.  His condition would indicate that he was long overdue for required grooming.    WHEN AN APPLICATION TO ADOPT IS APPROVED WE BRING NEWTON TO THE HOME VISIT AND MEET AND GREET, AND IF ANOTHER ANIMAL A SNIFF TEST.  WE DO NOT PLACE DOGS ON THIS VISIT. WE RETURN IF THERE WILL BE AN ADOPTION WHEN EVERYONE IS PREPARED TO ADOPT.  WE ONLY TRAVEL UP TO A ONE HOUR DRIVE FROM ROCKVILLE MD TO PLACE ANIMALS.
