Story
Milo is a lovable, handsome, young guy who has been through a lot of changes in his short life. He was born in November of 2020. Now he is looking for someone who will love him and give him the forever home he needs to show just how much love he has to share. When Milo was only 2 years old, his brother and best cat friend passed away. After that, he tried his best to make the family dog his replacement friend but it just wasn't the same. Not long after that, a human family member became ill and Milo was taken to a shelter. All the noises at the shelter scared Milo but fortunately, he was only there for a day or two before he lucked out with a very kind, patient foster mom taking him home. When Milo arrived in his foster home, he was scared and has had to learn to trust again. Fortunately, his foster mom knew Milo had lots of love to give so with her patience and expert guidance from a cat behaviorist, Milo discovered the view from the top of the dresser was much better than the "obstructed view" beneath the dresser and pets from a human are really nice. Milo enjoys his foster mom's dog - when it isn't too crazy - so would probably be happiest in a home where he has a calm cat and/or dog buddy. He also needs a quiet home because loud, unexpected noises send him back to the "obstructed view." Older children in the home would be fine too if they are willing to let Milo come to them on his own terms. Milo also loves to talk so he will gladly tell you all about his day. Story
I’m Einstein, and I’m looking for a forever home with my brother, Newton. We were both in April 2024. I’m a friendly, chill, and goofy cat who loves people—feel free to pick me up and cuddle me, but beware: I get jealous if you pet my brother more than me! My favorite activities are exploring, playing with toys, chasing Newton (or my own tail), and napping with Newton. I’m a fantastic soccer player and love chasing a ball down the hallway. I make a great buddy for anyone looking for a soft, sweet, and spunky friend. To adopt you must first complete an adoption application and meet the cat either virtually or in person in its foster home. Story
I’m Newton, and I’m looking for a forever home with my brother, Einstein. We were both born in April 2024. I’m a curious, sensitive, and independent cat who loves nothing more than getting up to adventures with Einstein (I cry when he’s out of my sight for too long). I enjoy playing with toys with my brother and my humans, and I’ll happily accept pets and being picked up when I’m in the mood. Wet food is my favorite thing in the whole world! If you’re looking for a pair of sweethearts to entertain you with our playful energy and make your heart melt when we nap curled around each other, we’re your guys! Story
Satsuki has an abundance of Big Kitten Energy. She was born in November of 2023. She loves toys and tunnels, chasing and wrestling with her sister, Mei, watching birds and squirrels from the windows, exploring and getting into everything. She also loves people and will great you, tails up, with trills, meows, and nuzzles. Satsuki will also follow you everywhere. Satsuki is great with dogs and even rabbits, but wants to be at the top of the cat pecking order. This makes her a little too assertive for some other cats. She is never aggressive, but will chase, hiss and swat. Her sister Mei, though, is always her BFF! Satsuki and Mei are very bonded so must be adopted together. Adopting a pair can be a great advantage if you are out of the house for long days at the office. Their unique bond guarantees endless joyful exchanges as they play, cuddle, and groom each other. Satsuki and Mei will also welcome your participation during play time and nap time! Due to their high-energy level, they are not recommended for very young children but are excellent companions for older elementary kids and up. To adopt you must first complete an adoption application and meet the cat either virtually or in person in its foster home. We do not do same day adoptions so, generally, we can only adopt within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Story
Ted is about 5 years old and is the most lovable boy. He loves to play and run around and will cuddle all day. He loves humans and I've never seen him be aggressive towards anyone. He also is pretty tolerant in terms of being held by young children and very rarely uses his claws. Ted unfortunately does not get along with our other cat and 2 dogs. We've tried multiple solutions but unfortunately due to the stress it is clearly causing for all of our animals, we have made the decision to try to rehome Ted. He would do best in a home where he is the only pet. He would probably love to be transitioned to a partially outdoor cat (and was one of the things we considered we just don't live in an area that would be safe for him). Given his propensity for snuggling, also probably would not be suitable for a house with a baby or very young child. Also maybe a good fit for someone who WFH. It breaks our heart to let him go but hopefully one of you could be the perfect fit for this sweet boy.

Story
Meet Willa! Willa is 3 and is a beautiful tabby cat. I recently adopted her from a shelter in Virginia. All of her medical history is up to date, and I have the full records. She is FIV negative with no health issues. She is litter trained and uses her scratching post. She was shy at first, but soon became very cuddly (evening snuggles are a must) and playful. She loves playing with her wire feather toy and chasing hairbands across the floor. She has selected a favorite chair and loves to doze on it. Willa has a lot of love to give! She clearly enjoys the company of people she trusts. In full transparency - I live in a small apartment, and Willa is VERY vocal, particularly at night. She meows most of the night, and even with earplugs it can be a struggle to sleep through it. I work very long hours and it is affecting me too much, as much as I adore her. She would be best suited in a bigger space with more room for both her own meandering and her owners sleep schedule.

Adopting a Tabby

Frequently asked questions about acquiring an Tabby - the pros and cons of adopting versus going through a breeder, and associated costs.

You can adopt a cat from a shelter at a much lower cost than buying one from a breeder. The cost to adopt a cat is $25 to $100, which covers the expenses of caring for the cat before adoption. Buying an exotic kitten from a reputable breeder in the United States can be very expensive. Depending on their breeding, coloring, and look, kittens can cost anywhere from $500 to $5,000. If you are set on a certain breed, please also consider breed-specific rescues.

You can start by doing a breed search on Adopt a Pet. The search will show you all the available tabby cats in your area.

Tabby fun facts

Fun Facts:

There are multiple theories about the origin of the name “tabby,” but one is that it refers to their silky coats: In the 14th century, silk was called “atabis,” which soon became “tabis,” which translated into the English word, “tabby.”
