Story
Update 12/26/22: Our little grinch Mad Max had a lot to be grumpy about this holiday season. He has just passed his 1 year anniversary with our rescue, which meant an annual vet visit, shots updated, bloodwork… he was displeased 😡 His owners had said he was about 4 years old, but he’s definitely more at the senior stage of his life according to his recheck this week, at least 7-8 years old. Since they couldn’t seem to keep him from constantly running loose and playing in traffic, it’s not surprising they couldn’t count either 🤦‍♀️ He is still an angry little mad man at times but has mellowed quite a bit- between his age and low-stress low-expectation lifestyle he’s been living, maybe he will actually be a nice dog by the time he’s a teenager. If you respect his space and let him be himself he’s actually pretty pleasant and easy to live with, has an understanding with his other weird bad boy dog friends, and appreciates a stable routine. Definitely no children and a calmer adult home, he’s looking for someone who understands him and will work to build a bond of mutual respect, maybe even love one day. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Mad Max in Northern NJ Meet Mad Max! He came to us with a bit of a reputation… a multiple time running-at-large offender whose owner finally decided to just not pick him back up from the shelter instead of just getting him neutered and being more careful to keep him at home 🤦‍♀️. He was a feisty guy at the shelter with a big personality, aloof with strangers, protective of his food, and not liking some handling. In other words a normal Lhasa type personality and Second Chance demon dog🤷‍♀️. Here he’s not as bad as expected, respectful of the dogs and has warmed up and been sweet and avoidant of confrontation for the most part, definitely no Ray or even Prancer. He seemed to actually be very accustomed and comfortable with a basket muzzle for grooming and vetting which is great… without the muzzle he tried tasting the clippers 😖 but as soon as the muzzle was on he immediately flopped down and calmly allowed us to shave him. Rated R for sure, no kids and a respectful adult home that knows when to give him space and give him attention on his terms. Another dog or a few dogs to live with seem to help balance him, and he so far seems to be pretty housebroken as well as wee wee pads if needed. Mad Max is approximately 4 years old and we think a Lhasa and/or Shih Tzu mix, 15lbs full grown, and is neutered and updated on shots. Please email njwoof@cs.com to meet him Due to COVID-19, we will not be holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we can schedule socially distant appointments with a specific dog outdoors at our vet’s office: VCA Morris Plains Animal Hospital 3009 Rt 10 East Morris Plains (Denville on GPS) NJ 07950 Now is the perfect time to open your home to a needy dog! Story
We haven’t introduced you to Mushy yet, but he is the overlooked/turned away-by-other-rescues or euthanized-for-failing-outdated-temperament-tests-in-shelters type of little dog we take in all the time to give not just a second chance, but their only chance. Their last chance. We have been working with him behind the scenes to make friends with him for a couple weeks, and it finally paid off. The first week was rough, not going to lie. He screamed and bared all his teeth when approached. He peed and pooped on the vet in terror while his head was wrapped in a towel to safely get shots into him. He’s just not the love at first sight type at all. But we just left him alone and offered him treats every day until one day we could finally pet him. And he realized he liked it. And then he asked to be picked up. And liked it. And then he even liked being brushed and groomed. Mushy actually lived up to his name and showed how mushy and cuddly he could be! He’s never going to be a happy go lucky, wagging his tail at strangers, walking the kids to the bus stop and letting people pet him kind of dog like a goofy happy pit bull or golden retriever. And that’s ok. He’s not for everyone. He’s a true one-woman dog and a master cuddler with his chosen person once you have worked to earn his trust. Once he loves you, his world revolves around you, and he will be the most trustworthy and reliable little furry person in your life. His second more comprehensive text exam once he bonded to us went much better, and he even wagged his tail and took some treats from the vet! So there is definitely hope for him making new friends, it just takes time and letting him make the decisions. Mushy LOVES other dogs- he follows and cuddles with them and they seem to give him more courage. He’s been used to living in a “pack” and would love to live in a multi dog home again where the dogs far outnumber the humans. He’s about 5 years old, under 15lbs, in good shape medically, neutered and updated on shots. For dogs like Mushy, the greatest gift we can give them is the gift of time and space to warm up to us on their terms, and let them live as happy and stress-free as possible in foster as we get to know them. Once they show us they have the potential to be happy, they stay with us as long as needed to find the right home, be it a week, a month, or a year, or more. We won’t push dogs like Mushy into an overwhelming situation or the wrong home environment just to get him out, but we would love to find him the right home soon so we have space to help the next misunderstood little guy like him. Email us at njwoof@cs.com if you are interested in adopting Mushy or any of his little friends in Northern NJ. And please share his story to help him in his search for his perfect person. Story
Officially introducing Princess 👑 We may have to rename her Princess Piranha 🐟, but we will give her the benefit of the doubt for now. Her photos mostly tell her story better than we could. But there’s a long history and cycle of neglect that’s been going on with this little dog at the hands of multiple people in her life. She’s not going to be an easy dog to find the right home for, but we have to give it a try… We first met this 3-4 year old Shih tzu back in October and she was almost as badly matted. She had been surrendered to the local pound due to divorce, was reported to not be so friendly and the wife didn’t want her after the husband moved away. Almost immediately when the husband found out she had been dropped at the shelter he reached out to them, was horrified by her condition at the hands of his ex, and wanted her back, but had moved to Florida. A local coworker was willing to take her in and make arrangements to get her back to him. We assisted by getting her a sedated shave down, spay, shots updated and a health certificate so she would be ready to fly. There were some bumps and her tough attitude made her recovery take a bit longer- the people watching her were unable to remove her cone or clean her and she got a skin infection from it and was a difficult patient. But last we heard arrangements had been made and she was flying back to her rightful owner who “loved” her. Recently, she was brought back to the pound severely matted and in even worse shape than before, with feces matted and obstructing her ability to go to the bathroom. We learned that she never ended up flying back to her owners after all and had remained with the coworker who struggled to care for her with her attitude issues at times. Her owner did finally come back to NJ to get her but when reunited she didn’t seem to remember him (or maybe she did and it was bad memories) and he didn’t want her back after all that. She wasn’t letting anyone groom or bathe awake or pick her up and would panic for too much handling, and so she ended up homeless and neglected yet again. She seemed to remember we had helped her before and was a bit calmer and even came over to be petted once we got her out of the kennel, but still with a feisty streak. So once again it was off to the vet for a fully sedated shave down. Her back end was very irritated and painful and she had skin infections from sitting in urine and feces caked mats for so long 😡 She’s settling in and making progress, has some very good qualities, but also has her limits and will need a special adult only home that respects her space and limits and is willing to compromise and meet her in the middle. She gets along with other dogs for the most part and even has started to play with some as long as she can approach them when she’s ready and they don’t crowd her, and she prefers to eat alone. She’s been pretty good about housebreaking and follows all the dogs out into a fenced yard. She does an adorable cute little groundhog begging pose at mealtimes. And she will come over for petting more and more, though always watching and suspicious to make sure you aren’t going to try to scoop her up or anything else she doesn’t like. She isn’t the type to run up and chase and attack people, just justifiably defensive of people trying to grab her or mishandle her after a lifetime of neglect and we suspect some physical abuse as well at the hands of many people. She’s a classic example of people getting dogs who should never have had dogs, especially non-shedding dogs who need to get used to regular grooming in a positive way from a young age. We are hoping the right person will come along and give our little Princess, who has been treated like anything but royalty, an unconditionally loving home even if she doesn’t always reciprocate. Someone that doesn’t expect her to be a snuggly cuddly lapdog and will let her adjust at her own speed. Mostly someone that will just leave her alone and not touch her until she’s ready without her consent. And likely sleepytime meds and sedated shave downs rather than just waiting for her to turn into a giant walking mat 🤦‍♀️ Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Princess in Northern NJ Because of your continued support and donations, we are able to give local dogs like Princess, who have no other options a chance at a comfortable pain free life where they will be understood, and time to let them go at their pace and learn to trust again. Rocco is ready for a home! This cute 2 year old Shih tzu mix came to us severely matted when his owner was evicted. He’s a friendly social little guy, sometimes a bit nervous and barky with new people at first but bonds quickly. He gets along with small female dogs but is mostly a people person who loves attention. He was used to wee wee pads mainly but is doing well with crate training and learning to go outside. He’s only about 12lbs full grown and a happy fun little guy. Story
Trixie is unfortunately once again searching for a forever home that understands her… This 5 year old Shih tzu/maltese mix originally came to us a painful half-bald itchy mess of chronic skin infections. The good news is her hair has grown back and she’s doing great with weekly medicated baths and a special diet to control her allergies. Unfortunately once she was feeling better in her new home, some unexpected behavioral quirks surfaced and she needs a more experienced home that can read her body language and know when she needs her space. She’s overall a very friendly social girl who makes friends easily. She’s well crate trained, a good walker, and a really cute little companion. But she doesn’t like to be bothered when sleeping/laying down or eating and is best not allowed to share your bed or furniture… let sleeping dogs lie and give her her own bed and space, and she will come to you for attention when she’s ready. She’s ok with most male dogs although she doesn’t like to share her food, space, and attention with other dogs all the time so might be happier living as an only pet at this point. She’s only about 12lbs full grown and other than her allergies which may flare seasonally and will need some longterm management, is in good health. Adults only please, kids would annoy her for sure. Story
Meet Lizard who came to NorthStar along with 6 siblings when his former owners became homeless. All the others have since been adopted but poor Lizard still waits for his forever home. Lizard is a Shih Tzu mix, approximately 1 year old, and weighing just 11 pounds. Lizard does have some “quirks” we think you should know about. He has a very mild case of cherry eye. The vet has checked him out and it does not affect his vision or his tear ducts and is not bothersome at all to him. In fact, his eyesight is perfect! We believe that Lizard’s former owners had their dogs using wee wee pads and they probably had accidents with that many dogs in the house. When he came to NJ, Lizard was very skeptical about grass! But through time and a big doggie sister, he learned to accept and even like it and finally is housebroken for the most part. He sometimes has an accident in the house so it’s best to keep a weewee pad out. Recently he started going potty in his bed and in his crate when it contained blankets. If we remove the bedding from the crate & leave out a wee wee pad, he does better. Occasionally we put him in diapers - The goal is to make him dislike wearing them so much that he only goes outside. So far so good as no accidents in 2 weeks! Lizard would do best in a home without children or possibly children over 10 years old as he has been fearful of sudden movements and has shown he is willing to go after a child but not an adult. He currently has a human sibling who he has grown to love and not want to attack at any movement made. Ideally, Lizard would be best in a home without kids.   Though out in public Lizard may seem fearful of other dogs, he is just fine living with them – check out the photos of Lizard with other dogs and with cats, too. He can get jealous but easily overcomes that in less than 48 hours! We feel that Lizard would also be happy in a home where he was an “only dog”. When Lizard was in a foster home in Texas, he was afraid of larger cats. However, he is good with and enjoys the company of smaller cats as you can see in his photos. He will actually groom them and sleep with them. As Lizard is only a year old, there is some puppy energy but he does tire quickly so it’s short lived. He is a Netflix and chill type of dude! And above all he is very cuddly and will fall asleep in your arms like a baby if given the opportunity! Lizard has been neutered, microchipped and brought up to date on vaccines. The adoption fee for this boy is $425. If you are interested in meeting Lizard please consider submitting an adoption application and be sure to mention his name - HC Lizard TX!!!!December 10, 2024, 2:12 pm
