Story
Romeo, Romeo, where art thou, Romeo? If you're searching for a handsome little guy to steal your heart, look no further! Romeo is a neutered male Shih Tzu with a sweet disposition to match his charming name. Romeo has a few health needs that require special care. He has allergies, which are managed with daily medication and a vegetarian diet. Since starting this routine, his skin has greatly improved, and we've even been able to reduce the frequency of his medicated baths. Romeo also has dry eye and will need daily eye drops long-term to keep him comfortable. Recently, he underwent surgery to remove a mast cell tumor from his leg, and we are awaiting the results to determine if the surgery was fully successful. Romeo is looking for a dedicated and peaceful home where he can spend his golden years surrounded by love and comfort. Could that be with you?

Story
Meet Holly a sweet 7 year-old Shih Tzu who is learning how to be a dog for the very first time. Used as a breeding mama in a puppy mill, Holly’s life was confined and limited. Now, she’s on a journey to discover what love, trust, and freedom feel like. Holly is understandably nervous and unsure of the world, but she’s making huge strides every day. She’s looking for a calm and patient family who can offer her the time and space she needs to decompress and feel safe. While a home with another dog to show her the ropes would be ideal, it’s not a must. Holly is starting to play with toys and gives her foster mom a tail wag every time she sees her. Though still shy, Holly is very curious and a longing to connect, which shines through in her softer moments and her tail wags. Holly is ready to find her forever home where she can finally experience the love she’s always deserved. If you feel you could be a good match for Holly, please fill out an application for our review.  January 18, 2025, 7:45 am

Story
Ashe aka Ashley   Initially came to us from a GTA shelter when she was found as a stray.  She needed an immediate cystotomy for bladder stones.  Post surgery she's doing great and her foster mom update is below.  She will need to be on a special urinary diet for life so stones don't form again   5 year old spayed female Shih tzu She's very playful and loves to chew and shake her stuffies while cuddling on your lap or running around with them in her mouth. She sleeps through the night on the bed. She goes for a pee in the backyard as soon as we wake up and before going for a walk because sometimes she just can't wait.  She goes out into the backyard between walks to pee just in case. She's a good eater and is fed her specialty Urinary kibble with some canned food.  She walks well on leash and enjoys her walks. She does get overexcited, barks and pulls to see other people on the sidewalk so I try to give her and people more space to help calm her. Sometimes, it seems like she's warning them away but if they stop to say hi, she's so happy. She is also super excited to see other dogs and will become quite vocal and start pulling to approach them. When she says hello to other dogs she's fine, it's just her initial approach that could use some calming down and may not be appreciated by some dogs She can be vocal when she hears sounds and will bark when people come to the door but she's very friendly and greets anyone who comes to visit. She's great in the car and settles quickly. The groomers said she behaved excellently and she is fine with handling. She is respectful with her foster brother, and will take the hint when he won't play with her, although she tries her best to convince him she's a fun gal. She has to go out to pee more often than most dogs due to the urinary food, so would be best for someone who works from home or is retired  January 4, 2025, 9:48 am

Story
Meet Joy, a sweet 6-year-old Shih Tzu who is learning how to be a dog for the very first time. Used as a breeding mama in a puppy mill, Joy’s life was confined and limited. Now, she’s on a journey to discover what love, trust, and freedom feel like. Joy is understandably nervous and unsure of the world, but she’s making small strides every day. She’s looking for a calm and patient family who can offer her the time and space she needs to decompress and feel safe. With her limited past experiences, she’ll need gentle guidance to navigate the basics of dog life—from building trust to developing confidence in daily routines like walking on a leash and feeling comfortable in a home environment. While a home with another dog to show her the ropes would be ideal, it’s not a must—what Joy needs most is love and understanding. Once she bonds with her people, Joy loves to stay close and will even cuddle on your chest if you hold her. She has a gentle and quiet demeanor and enjoys observing the world around her. Though still shy, Joy has a sweet curiosity and a longing to connect, which shines through in her softer moments. Her foster still getting to know her personality, but one thing is clear: Joy is ready to find her forever home where she can finally experience the love she’s always deserved. Story
Pippin / 3y 9m / Male / Shih Tzu / WEIGHT 16 lbs (7 kgs) / Owner Surrender / Currently fostered in North York Good with independent dogs/cats/kids / House and crate trained / Major Medical Concerns: None Is your lap feeling like a cold, empty wasteland this winter? Fear not, because Pippin, your future cuddle buddy, is here to turn that frigid expanse into a warm and fuzzy paradise! Whether he’s napping in your lap or snoozing near your feet while you pretend to be productive, Pippin is your ultimate home buddy. Just be warned—he may sound like a tiny alarm system barking at anyone new who dares to step inside his fortress! He thinks it’s his job to alert you of any potential invaders, but once he decides you’re not a threat, he’ll shower you with all the love a little doggo can muster. Get ready for a lifetime of devotion and a warm lap! Pippin’s favorite activities include snuggling, cuddling, napping, belly rubs, and oh, did we mention more cuddling? He’s always up for a stroll, even in the icy winds that could freeze a snowman’s smile, as long as he’s dressed like a fashionable winter pup in boots and a jacket. With his low energy levels, he doesn’t need much entertainment — he's really more of a lounging connoisseur than a toy enthusiast. In fact, if you try to engage him in a game of fetch, he might just give you the “do I look like a puppy to you?” look! Fortunately, he can happily hold down the fort alone if you need to dash out for work or on a taco run. However, if you decide to take him along, buckle him in—if he has the chance, he’ll turn into a furry co-pilot, crawling right into your lap and trying to help steer with his adorable little paws! Pippin dreams of settling down in a quiet neighbourhood where he can be the king of the castle and avoid having too many visitors. He would prefer to be the only pet getting all the attention—talk about being the center of the universe! He might tolerate another dog, a cat, or even well-behaved kids, but only if they understand his personal space bubble—because God forbid anyone should try to engage him in wild play; he has a strict “no fun allowed” policy! This little velcro pup is on a mission to cuddle you into oblivion, all while maintaining his royal lap status. If your lap has a vacancy and you’re ready for an abundance of love (and quite possibly a lick or two), don’t hesitate to apply to meet him at www.caninehaven.org/dog-application.Your warm, cozy winter awaits!
